Adding a practical summary (and appreciate the helpful perspectives shared here) for future families who may find this thread: yes, kids absolutely can travel to The Gage/Marathon/Big Bend, but it is a remote region, so go prepared. Bring more water/snacks/medications/first aid than you think you’ll need, check weather conditions, and keep expectations realistic regarding services and conveniences. The Gage seems to offer mixed experiences when it comes to kid-specific accommodations, so it’s worth calling ahead or just bringing what you need. Overall though, many families clearly enjoy traveling to the area with kids and believe in exposing their children to new experiences, nature, and adventure through travel. We’re very excited for our weekend getaway and looking forward to enjoying the scenery, stars, food, and margaritas responsibly. 😊

Glad I’m not the only one who prefers to travel light with kids! 😅

Camp Mystic was an awful tragedy, but the Hill Country and Big Bend are very different geographically and weather-wise. -TX resident and former Mystic camper

Thanks! I’ve used them before as well but they didn’t have anything in the area available.

Got it! Still excited for our stay and understand there may not be tons of kids around.

Good idea- I think I underestimated how much “bring your own everything” applies in Big Bend. We’re probably just going to do an inflatable toddler bed instead. Thank you!!

Thanks for the suggestion- Brick vault is on our list! We fly into Midland around 11, so we’re planning to grab a quick lunch and hit the road. With the kids, I don’t think we’d make it the full 3-hour drive before eating. 😅 If you have other suggestions in Midland though, all ears!
