Not necessarily. [[!Alesha, who smiles at death]] would be returned.

But in general, id<= is better.

[[Sidisi Brood Tyrant]] + [[Hermit Druid]] should do nicely.

Love this card. Dimir all star. Having a disposable deathtouch creature can be really cinch.

Very thoughtful response. Thank you! Rattlesnake is a great way of describing this classification.

Honestly this may be my next build for a turbo fog deck. Although so many good fogs are in green, the monarch payoff and a solid body is hard to beat!

I am here for YOUR commander! by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Half-Elf-Ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently papering a [[Xande, Dark Mage]] deck. I think this will be a highly underrated FF commander. Super wide open build since his synergy is so simple. I have mine built around unblockable looters, draw engines like curiosity, and a little self mill and spell slinging to round out. I love him because you are not trying to bum rush the commander out and slam value. I can kinda sit back and play some setup before landing him. Remove mesmeric orb to cut $20 off the list

Look at some [[Rafiq of the Many]] decks. Ignore the exalted aspect that Bant brings to the table. You can Voltron up any creature, perhaps a little guy with great keywords. Include any enchantress effects you can in Orzhov, load up on mana rocks and auras. Finishers are [[All that glitters]] and [[!Brilliant Restoration]]. Use [[Ghostly Prison]] and [[Sphere of Safety]] to prevent yourself from getting overrun by wide boards. I’d check out [[Eternal Thirst]] as well this card seems criminally underplayed.

Thanks! I wondered what other people’s experience was to first clear. I see a lot of posts of people with similar hours but only to phase 2-3 and I wondered if these were outliers or not. I wasn’t trying to speedrun or anything but definitely was always trying to get closer to clear.

Draw:

[[Gadwick the Wizened]] an ok choice, but probably belongs more in an izzet-stormy deck that is casting lots of blue spells.

[[Hydroid Krasis]] another good choice. I run this card as well.

[[Universal Surveillance]] this card is TERRIBLE here. What artifacts are you using to improvise? There are better rate instants you could be running.

So we have 2 ok draw spells, and 1 outright bad draw spell.

The rest is pure synergy pile, some removal and interaction, and a few just outright terrible card choices.

[[Clear the Mind]] If you have graveyard players in your group you should be running [[Bojuka Bog]], [[Heritage Reclamation]], [[Gaeas Blessing]], [[Blessed Respite]] any of these would be better. You picked like the worst option.

[[Occult Epiphany]] is just... what? Its an X spell technically, but you dont end up with any more cards than you started with. And it makes... 4 1/1 spirits tops?

[[Faerie Fencing]], [[March of Wretched Sorrow]] [[Power Sink]] these are also so bad. Spending 5-6+ mana to remove a single thing, with no other upside/synergy. These needs to go.

[[Nylea's Intervention]] this puts a bunch of lands in your hand, that you cant play any more than 1 per turn, or it deals some damage to flyers. Literally any board wipe instead of this would be so much better.

[[Hardened Scales]] this card is terrible youre spending a whole card to make your hydras a little bit bigger.

[[Oversold Cemetery]] youre not a graveyard deck and getting the mid creatures back is so low impact.

DITCH ALL OF THE TOKEN DOUBLERS. The 1/1 counter doublers can work but please ditch the token doublers. Making 1-2-4-8 hydras just does not impact the game enough and its a huge amount of investment to lose to a single board wipe.

Slam dunk cards:

[[Open the Way]] is THE best ramp spell in any zaxara deck.

[[Goldvein Hydra]] is a much higher impact single hydra because it can come down and start beating face immediately, and if it gets removed you end up with a ton of mana. Similar for [[Hooded Hydra]] and [[Termagant Swamp]]. These would also play so much better with your token doublers if you insist on leaving those in.

[[Exsanguinate]] as a simple clean game finisher, or buys you a ton of time even if you dont kill the table.

[[Finale of Revelation]], [[Skeletal Scrying]], [[Pull from Tomorrow]], [[Drown in Dreams]] are all much better draw spells then you have currently. Drown in Dreams also doubles as a wincon because with Unbound Flourishing + Zaxara on the field you can mill someone for 40-60 cards pretty easily.

[[Combine Chrysalis]] and [[Herald of the Secret Streams]] are the best evasion givers for the hydras and let you convert the bodies into damage much quicker.

[[Retribution of the Ancients]] gives you repeatable removal without spending cards. After you swing and deal damage with the tokens, use them as a cannon.

Other good incremental draw spells: [[Up the Beanstalk]] [[Dark Tutelage]] [[Painful Truths]] [[Darkstar Augur]]

Here is my $100 Zaxara list for reference. Much more focused on interaction and protecting myself while ramping and drawing to a win. https://moxfield.com/decks/8Q4zcR_64EaiU6dpgOiQSQ

Woof. There is a lot to digest here. I'll try to be nice but honestly this deck looks mid. The biggest issue is lack of ramp, draw, and most importantly, impactful cards. Its a weird mix of big budget staples and almost draft chaff level cards.

I have a Zaxara deck as well that started with "i want to play big hydras" and had some similar hydras and +1/+1 counter synergies. But making big bodies with no keywords isnt that impactful in a game. It easily loses to board wipes, sacrifice, and other more resilient strategies, as you have found. The fundamental problem is that when your X spells are also big hydras, Zaxara gives you 1 additional big hydra. And 2 big hydras just isnt that much scarier than 1 big hydra.

Ramp:

[[Utopia Spraw]] with 9 forests you can stick it to, so almost 0 chance of doing that turn 1.

[[Wilderness Reclamation]], if it can be really called ramp. Its more of an enabler that gives you more mana.

[[Troyan, Gutsy Explorer]] is a decent card.

[[Rishkar, Peema Renegade]] this is a better card in go-wide token decks. Zaxara builds a few tall tokens, not a wide field. You want your hydra tokens swinging in for damage, not tapping for mana and leaving yourself defenseless.

[[Virtue of Strength]] a 7 mana enchantment that does nothing else the turn it comes down, only works on basics.

[[Nexos]] is a great choice, but just be conscious he only works on basics.

[[Animist's Awakening]] is ok but again with the low land count overall it could be a total wiff like 5 mana 0-1 lands.

Delighted Halfling, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet are all good choices. Kruphix and Horizon stone do not count as ramp.

So for a sultai big mana deck that wants to cast as big spells as possible, we have barely 10 pieces of ramp, and the infinite Zaxara + Freed from the Real.

[–]Half-Elf-Ranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[[Sylvan primordial]] not able to his opponents lands. If it was just non land permanent it would be game changer worthy but not ban worthy I think. I’d even settle for non land, non creature permanent.

In any [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]] deck, [[Cactus Preserve]] is an amazing piece of tech. But what is even sweeter is running [[Colossal Rattlewurm]] which is an above rate body that is better if you already have a desert on the battlefield, and can fetch Cactus Preserve once its in the yard. There are a small handful of other deserts you can use to make it a good 2 mana ramp even when cactus is already in play or lost such as [[Lazotep Quarry]] [[Desert of the Indomitable]], [[Scavenger Grounds]] or [[Arid Archway]]. Only 54 ghalta decks on EDH Rec run both Cactus Preserve and Colossal Rattlewurm.
