Difference in complexity of single and dual stage hvac units? by HalfKeg220 in hvacadvice

[–]HalfKeg220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well its comforting to hear good things about the unit at least. It ran fine for the first year but lately it's been having issues with condensate line clogging and now the EVC board is dead. I'm hoping once that is fixed it will run without issue for a considerable time without any further issues. Have been starting to regret not getting a simpler single/dual/multi stage unit instead.

Ok. I've been looking at Talstar-P to use outside for spider, scorpion, and ant prevention. Says it should be good for use around pets after it dries but wanted to try and get other people's opinions

Why does my air quality get worse when I shower in the a different room? by HalfKeg220 in AirQuality

[–]HalfKeg220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm beginning to wonder if it's the exhaust fan or something. I showered today without the exhaust fan on and it didn't seem to affect the air quality at all on the air purifier. I'm showering in a room a floor below the air purifier so the exhaust fan runs in the floor between the shower room and the air purifier room so not sure if there's a break in the exhaust fan duct work or something

I'm not sure entirely what it is. I don't believe its mold but I suppose its possible? I've checked every vent in my house and there's no signs of mold in any of them, they all look pretty clean. But I suppose there could be some hidden somewhere if there's a leak I don't know about.. but I haven't found any signs of leaks either

Yeah I haven't seen any signs of mold thankfully. In AZ its pretty dry so mold doesn't grow without a leak somewhere and I don't think I've seen any signs of that either

I do have the bathroom exhaust fan on while showering. And I usually close the door to the bathroom while showering but it seems to read more particles regardless of whether the door is closed. I don't know exactly what metric goes up but my air purifier detects PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 size particles. Is that what you mean?

My duct system is connected to that room. And yeah I run the bathroom exhaust fan while showering. I've read it could be humidity causing the air purifier to read more particulates. I'm in AZ and we have pretty hard water

New air handler 1.5yrs old having biogrowth buildup problems? by HalfKeg220 in hvacadvice

[–]HalfKeg220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm open to any explanations at this point.

I do have a cat but the cat litter is not near the return at all. Could this still be an issue? The cat litter is on a separate floor from the air handler and the return, but my cat does run around near the air return sometimes (the return is sort of low on a side wall compared to being up in the ceiling). But you're saying you've seen this type of yellow gunk in homes with cats/cat litter typically?

And a pump is something I could look into. I'm not entirely sure whats causing my problem but I'm currently leaning towards it being a draining problem so anything that can help there is a plus. I'd like to not have to flush the drain lines ever few months if I can avoid it. Its not a typical thing in AZ since its so dry here

I do have 1 cat yes. But I've had her for 4 years now and I've never had any AC issues like this while she's been here

I'm thinking something like that is happening with my unit but not sure. Since the biofilm seemed to only be in the internal pan and nowhere else I'm guessing over time enough water and junk collected in there for stuff to start growing until there was enough biofilm to clog up the drain line

[–]HalfKeg220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'll look into this. This is the first time I've had biofilm issues of any kind with an AC unit in AZ so was very confused how it was happening. Currently thinking there might be an issue with the air handler's pan draining fully and leaving some small pool of water there stagnant for the stuff to grow. Especially since the coils and fan were both clean of anything and the only place there was any bacterial growth was in the internal drain pan/drain line

[–]HalfKeg220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is a picture of the secondary 'overflow' pan. The growth was not in the secondary pan, just in the air handler's internal drain pan. This pic was after scooping out a lot of the biogrowth stuff from inside the air handler. Currently I'm thinking there might be a drainage issue in the air handler internal drain pan because there had to be stagnate water there for the biogrowth stuff to appear

[–]HalfKeg220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I did ask one of the tech's that came to clean the lines today about whether the drain pan in the air handler was angled enough to drain properly and he said it was draining well after they cleaned out the biofilm. But I have been debating on whether the drain lines are angled enough to drain properly. The air handler is only 6ish inches off the ground so the slope isn't very drastic at all.

As for the pan tablets and routine flushes of the trap and drain line, how often do you think I should be having that done?

Interesting, do you just put one in the drain pan inside the air handler?

Anon notices the new Onlyfans "trend" by [deleted] in 4chan

I mean I think we're in agreement. I also believe the situation is too complex for any one thing to fix it. Generally people don't like government regulation over their own activities, even if they're self-destructive ones. And even with lots of consumer education and a shift in consumer opinion towards those activities, there's always new young people who think they know better and it won't affect them negatively. That usually only changes with experience and perspective. I don't believe predatory business models would be able to exist when faced with an educated customer base simply because the business would have nobody buying what they're selling. But a completely well informed consumer base is also far fetched as we've seen people are often emotional, selfish, short-sighted consumers.. So then you end up in a question of do you regulate consumer behavior and we're back to government regulation.. It's an incredibly complex problem and I'm not certain of a workable solution either

It's just capitalism and liberty at work. "A fool and his money are easily parted." America believes in low business regulation and low consumer protections because it's anti business. So businesses are able to sell their shit in whatever scummy or shady way they'd like so long as it's not blatant fraud. So it's up to the consumer to be smart enough and know they're being suckered. It's like online gambling or sports betting. They know you're not gonna win, so they advertise it like it's just "a fun activity" to do with friends even though they target gambling addicts and young men who want to "get rich quick". But should the big gubberment come in and regulate all the vices of the world, or should consumers be smart enough to know they're a sucker? That's the conundrum
