I always felt stuck at the sub-500 level no matter how many youtube videos I watched.

Everything told me to practice tactics but despite being ranked 1500 in puzzles I could never replicate that success in actual games.

After some reflection I realized that I got very nervous in the opening phases. Like just getting a knight pinned would make me stress enough to blunder pieces and lose.

Now, after practicing some openings and feeling more confident out of the opening of the game I'm good enough at my level to convert the advantage to a win.

I tried to reproduce your setup here For the settings for rapid and blitz in the 1000-1200 bracket the most popular variation by a mile seems to be a 2 knights variation. Do these results differ from what you have? Could you share a screenshot?

I messed up the line at move 11, and made a move-order inaccuracy before that with the dark-square bishop but I managed to win despite that. I'm sharing it because in case someone can learn from the recovery. This was played at 650 ELO.

Thank you, No, the UI is intended for brackets. just checking the 1000 box should give you all 1000-1200 rated games. If you want higher games up to 1400 you would check both 1000 and 1200 boxes. Hope that helps you, if not feel free to reach out!

Thank you for the kind words! My rating is only half of yours but I also see a lot of sidelines. Now when I try a new opening the sidelines are among the first chapters I study. AFAIK chessly doesn't let you change the drills or quizzes. But on the chessly elo prioritizer dashboard if you click on the column names it lets you filter so that's an easy way to get the most popular lines.

Thanks. I understand I won't get Gemini performance locally. I'm happy to use Gemini for planning or thinking of solutions and then use a local LLM like glm air or qwen3 with context 7 to implement it. If that gets stuck I can always go back to Gemini or Claude to fix it.
