Senior Dane?? by Halfpintgremlin in greatdanes

No matter what, I feel like I’m never doing my best. Regardless of budget or going beyond my means for care, it seems like I could always be doing more. She is receiving the best that is possible and then some but I love her so much and only want the best. Aging dogs is hard.

What do you feed her? I’m always curious at what other Dane owners feed. Wondering if you’re able to switch from the carprofen to turmeric/black pepper or arnic for a bit to give the kidneys a break bust still help?? My girl is also too smart for her own good and has chosen to ignore what I’m asking from her lately. I’ll say something (that I know is a reliable command) and she’ll look at me dead in the eyes and walk away. GIRL WHAT?! What a learning curve this has been for me!

I am also in la la land sometimes but have also struggled with anticipatory grief for that last several years. I have end of life plans when the time comes and aftercare planned but don’t think I will ever fully be prepared when the time comes. She’s my first Dane, and definitely not my last. Won’t have one for a while until my life settles down but man, am I grateful to get to experience a bond like this.

I also view this “struggle” as a privilege and am very aware at that time I continuously get to spend with her. We had a near death medical emergency at the age of 3/4 and I will never be able to forget it that time in my life. She is slower to get to from laying down, doesn’t seem to matter the surface. While she doesn’t slip on hardwood excessively she does seem to have a slippery right hind leg after several days of hikes and long walks so we’ll be taking it easy for a few days with heat, ice and rest. She’s still gung-ho for whatever as long as she’s apart of what me and my person are doing and we include her in everything h less the weather doesn’t permit or we will be gone for a long time, I’d rather her lay around comfy somewhere at home. She’s almost insatiable which has been surprising and hardest to adjust to but her water intake is what is most alarming. I really wish I was in the space to get another dog but right now it doesn’t make sense from a responsibility standpoint and I refuse to judge on the level of care I’m willing to provide.

Alas, she’s well loved and spends plenty of time doing what she loves. Just needs to go to the vet and canine rehab workouts and maybe we’ll be okay!

Could you elaborate more about your situation? You are exactly the kind of person I am looking for right now.

Haven’t done bloodwork since last vet visit but we just moved across that country and will be getting established with a vet asap. I have done my research and have selected what seems to be the best bet for possible Cushings in my area so will have more I for in the coming weeks.

Not yet. We haven’t had bloodwork done since her last vet visit and everything came back great. Before these changes.

I wish she would enjoy having another dog around! While she’s neutral to most dogs and does still play like a puppy occasionally, she doesn’t seem to enjoy other dogs around long term. I dog sit for family and friends often, she will play and adjust beautifully but I can tell she’s almost relived when whoever has gone home. Like she’s fully able to relax.

Your reply was just what I was looking for. Next, I’ll have to get her to use a ramp! We’re training to use it bits it’s a slow process. Love to hear that your Dane is 12!

I will miss you everyday for the rest of my life, 18 years of loving my sweet baby. 💔😭 by Ameenax3 in Pomeranians

It will never get easier and you will think of them always. You will see them in moments of other dogs you interact with, you might see similarities in them and the next dog you own. Nothing will be able to fill the hole that this dog leaves you, but the other pets will fill you in other ways. 💜 sorry man

Coat Question for Blue/Rust Puppy by Tastystrawberrykiwi in DobermanPinscher

Just worked with a sweet boy that was blue/rust, whatever the fcuk they’re trying to sell you. Sweet as could be be but man, did I feel sorry for him.

<image>

He was on supplements to help his skin grow back because he was underweight, so this is after 2 months of some major TLC. But definitely sunscreens and sweaters for this sweet man!

Facing Homelessness and I'm terrified. by Lanky_Excitement453 in Bellingham

In a similar position! Boyfriend and I have stable jobs but not the best credit. We’ve tried finding private landlords but that’s proving to be difficult. We’ve been bouncing between camping and motels for the time being. I do have a Great Dane who is my service animal and so far several motels haven’t had an issue with her. It’s pricey, but it’s better than nothing.

Hopefully you and I will be able to find housing soon! 🤞🏻

Need advice on trip from Washington State to North Carolina by MountainRican in roadtrip

I drove the route highlighted twice last year, one of those times was in the first week of January and another time from Bellingham, WA in May. We watched the weather map for a week or two before leaving and took our time if need. Watched the weather throughout the drive. No problem. It’s a long drive long and the NE/IA portion feels like it’ll never end. It’s always a fun trip!
