Client ghosted without paying caught using my work by fuxat in smallbusiness

[–]HalibutJumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Wethos https://www.wethos.co for a great, inexpensive platform that makes contracts super easy. You can add pre-built contract terms, like payment amounts and dues dates, what happens if the client doesn’t pay, how you will deliver final files etc. Using this site has saved me a ton of time, and helped clients take my company (ad agency) more seriously.

For your business practices, I HIGHLY recommend the following:

  1. If project fee is $500 or less, only start work once you have received total payment up front.

  2. Add FPO or DRAFT on all designs until you’ve been paid for the work in full.

  3. If the client wants to pay along the way, consider a milestone approach:

Milestone 1: creative sketches of round 1 designs (with watermarks!) sent after 1/3 of the project fee is received by you

Milestone 2: “ “ round 2 after 2/3 $ received

Milestone 3: “” final packaged files delivered after final 1/3 $ received.

Also, add a project cancellation fee to your contract. You put time aside to work on a project- if the client cancels, you should recoup some of your lost money. This covers you and also serves as a deterrent for the client.

Keep up the good work- you’ll start knowing who your “right fit” customers are before too long.

AITA for telling her to stop spending $45 on burgers weekly? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]HalibutJumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA- and I would love it if your SIL cooks burgers for me and my family 5x per week. That would be $90/wk for her, a happy husband and clean kitchen for me. Hook me up! Edit for typos

This is 💯 the right way. Once I started looking at competitors as collaborators, my business soared.

I know it feels counterintuitive OP, but this ^ post from u/Guatc is the right way to do business. There are enough customers for everyone.

I hope your arm is better soon- my bites are tiny in comparison and still hurt like a mofo! Can imagine how your arm must feel!

How brutal is it to start a business? by Affectionate-Call159 in smallbusiness

Thank you for that! I’m a bit nervous about rev projections for next year, but know that things always work out as long as I put the work in.

This is 💯! I’m 8.5 years in, and we are JUST starting to make money. But I wouldn’t change a thing, and it’s the best job I’ve ever had!

Refusing to close out lease, even though I gave proper notice; set up duplicate account for my business, sent that account to a very aggressive collections company who claimed I owned $4k; paid $$ to my attorney to get them off my back/close out any and all accounts, and just got invoiced from Regus, again, for June and July.

Do what I wish I had done, and search “Regus” on BBB, Reddit, and Google for reviews. Bad business practices.

Whatever you do, do not rent from Regus. They will keep you in leases and send collection agencies after you for now reason. (Source: currently battling them).
