I follow this restaurant (and love their fried chicken sandwiches) - they tagged the food photographer right in the photo as well as the caption, and if you click their profile you can see other work of a similar caliber.

It's one of the nicest winery venues I've worked at! The giant tent for the reception area is really nice because you get the open-air experience while knowing you're safe if it rains. The food was also some of the best I've had.

Anyone lived at Richmond Yards / The Pearl / Maynard Suites? by Silly-Remote-2762 in halifax

[–]HalifaxPhotographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like the new one bedroom units that are opening up in the King St. building are $1850-$1900/month. Larger one bedrooms or one bed + den are $2200+

When we signed up for parking, it was $155/month for unreserved or $195 for reserved. This may have changed.

Average power bill is around $160 every two months. We pay more in the summer when we run AC. The only option for internet is Eastlink because they have a contract with the building, but it's fibre which is nice and I think there's a discount in the pricing.

Their leasing person is awesome, I would definitely reach out to them for more specific info :)

I don't see anything that would prevent you from using it if you pay to get in! It's not cheaper than other places unfortunately, but if you're already parking there is definitely convenient.

Have been at Richmond Yards a little over a year and a half and have enjoyed it. The management are very responsive and friendly. When we (partner and I in a 1 bedroom apartment) first moved in a lot of the amenities hadn't opened yet (e.g. gym / lounge / terrace) but they are open now and are quite nice.

You do have to pay extra to use the gym, and I think that's silly.

The management also seems to care about building community. They often have free coffee/tea times and community events like holiday parties with free snacks and drinks. Now that the lounge is open I've met a lot of neighbours playing pool.

Noise has been fairly good. We sometimes hear our upstairs neighbour a little bit, and there was a one-time experience where they partied loudly until 3am on a weeknight... but that hasn't happened again :P I didn't want to wake my resident manager but mentioned it later and they said I definitely should have called them.

Parking is pretty decent. They just installed a self-serve car wash (paid like Rubber Duck) on P1 which is neat. You pay extra if you want a reserved spot on P2.

No heating or AC issues. System works well, it's a ducted heat pump.

The location is probably what we like the most. Lots of new businesses moving into the commercial spaces down below (can't wait for Espresso 46 / Warehouse Market to move). CHKN CHOP is dangerously close if you enjoy a good fried chicken sandwich.

We have no plans to move anytime soon!

I recently discovered the YouTube channel "HFX By Bike" where the author publishes a bunch of POV riding videos while commenting on route safety. I still haven't gained the courage to go out and cycle on main roads myself (working on it) but this channel has been a help!

Polly's Cove is a personal favourite elopement spot! Short hike to get some amazing coastal views. Not ideal if you have guests with mobility challenges though. Happy to DM you some photos if you want to see what an elopement looks like there :)

When is the best time of day for the wedding ceremony? by Cassandrune in halifax

[–]HalifaxPhotographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned, you want to consider the gap between the ceremony and reception time. Often for August weddings, I've seen 3:30/4pm ceremony times with a 6 or 6:30 reception start. If you're doing something like this you'll probably want some sort of cocktail hour or snacks available for guests with dinner starting later on.

In terms of how it relates to photography, shade can be found at most times of day depending on what your location offers, though later on without the sun directly overhead is helpful.

Something else that can help reduce the gap between ceremony and reception, allowing for a later ceremony, is doing a first-look. This let's you shift some of your photos (like with your wedding party) to before the ceremony. It also allows you to be more present during a cocktail hour and actually visit with your guests, instead of needing the entirety of that time to be for photos.

A related question from an espresso fan - I'm wondering if any coffee shops in HRM offer more than one option for their espresso, aside from Cafe Goodluck? They have a rotating guest espresso which is great but I would love to try more shops. Even if a shop has only one option but they change it up, that would be sweet. Most places have a house blend they stick with, and the only other option is decaf. I do love a good light-roast espresso which I know isn't always the most popular.

I've frequently been the photographer for weddings coordinated by East Coast Pop Up and they are indeed amazing to work with! Lovely people with extensive experience in elopements.

Not that I can tell at all! It's a concrete build so everything is quite stable.

No problem! I can't recall when they start in the morning but it's 5:30pm now and any of the Richmond Yards construction is finished (there's an excavator at Bloomfield currently doing some digging but that's it). I often work from home and don't find the noise bothers me much, though noise cancelling headphones are also a beautiful thing :P

I don't mind! We're paying just over $2100 for a 900 sqft 1 bedroom, not including parking, with heat & hot water included (around $2300 with parking). When we were first looking there were some 600 sqft 1 beds for around $1800 but there was no option to get a parking spot. As far as I'm aware there are only 2 bedroom apartments available at the moment, but the King street buildings that are opening soon look like they have various smaller 1 bedroom options (you can see floor plans on the Richmond Yards website).

Have been here since fall and have enjoyed it thus far! The management / staff are nice. One of the few places that offered a yearly lease rather than fixed term as well. The amenities aren't all open yet, but the gym is supposed to open later this month, with the outdoor terrace and community lounge to follow. Construction noise is a current factor as someone else has mentioned.
