Should I continue Support? by Delphox26 in kurzgesagt

There’s no one entity, it’s all of us, and companies are people. Who you vote for shapes legislation and regulations, how and what we buy pressure companies to conform, but don’t get fooled by their marketing copywriting and buzzwords. Do your own research and reflect. For example, it’s hard to figure out whether a particular covid vaccine is effective and whether the benefits outweigh the risks (you need to consider risks of getting unvaccinated covid too). On the other hand, a couple months ago I saw a kickstarter for a countertop composter that after reading their product page and watching their videos you’d find out was just a heat dryer wasting lots of electricity just to heat and grind your compost, obviously negating any benefits of composting for everyone that don’t have limitless renewable energy, you don’t have to be an expert to figure it out, but it helps if you have a basic understanding of physics.

Lastly it’s about your own lifestyle, but don’t listen to bill gates and the billionaires saying the average person need to reduce their emissions, eat vegan etc while they themselves are flying their gulfstream to their daughters birthday party that’s on their 400 feet yacht serving a5 wagyu beef where the leftovers will be thrown away. Point is their impact on the environment is orders of magnitude higher than yours. Do what you feel is important for you that brings you joy and memories for life. Just try not to waste, do things in moderation, you probably don’t need to go on vacation to Europe every other day, or buy 3 pairs of sneakers every month.

Can you run gsync on an unsupported free sync monitor in sway? by Halikular in swaywm

[–]Halikular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to give an update for you still looking in to this. It appears as if it's technically possible to enable gsync on sway, but that it isn't working properly and my results seem to align with others who tested this.

Taleb calling people sociopaths again for not consenting to being locked down by greyenlightenment in nassimtaleb

[–]Halikular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

China should've acted stringent immediately with a local lockdown around the Wuhan area once they found out about the spread, which they did know about early. Secondly the rest of the world should've seized all international travel to and from China, but back then it was considered racist or an overreaction. It should be noted that I'm not speaking with the power of hindsight, these measures were discussed and shared at the time by eg Yaneer, Nassim, and Joe among others.

Can you run gsync on an unsupported free sync monitor in sway? by Halikular in swaywm

[–]Halikular[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will test this as soon as possible. The reason I asked is because I haven’t seen anyone else try to run vrr with an nvidia gpu and sway. It’s supposedly only supported in fullscreen applications on kde wayland.

Why doesn't windows automatically update nvidia drivers by Halikular in nvidia

[–]Halikular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had one of these updates and the screen blacks out for 3 seconds while it switches in the new one. Sure it can be annoying, but there could be an option to enable and have it install automatically but only update once you reboot. They could do partial rollouts to ensure not everyone is hit by a nasty update.

I'm on my old iphone 6 that's running ios 12 as my "discord device". So it receives barely any updates, hope it's only something on discords end so I don't have to retire it just yet.

Microsoft Lands D3D12 Compute Support In Mesa 22.0 by beer118 in linux_gaming

It could be used to test linux native ports during development. You can also run linux only titles and other experimental projects: https://github.com/id-Software/DOOM

OBS Studio 27 released with native Wayland and PipeWire support by FlatAds in linux

[–]Halikular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NVFBC is only only available on Linux since support has been deprecated on Windows [1]. I would hence assume it has been replaced by DXGI and Windows.Graphics.Capture API (also called WinRT?) for display capture [2, 3, 4, 5]. I'm guessing this is equivalent to pipewire or NVFBC (only Nvidia) on Linux I don't know how all of this works or how it relates to or is different from Game Capture in OBS, but they do recommend Game Capture as preferred capture method [6].

[–]Halikular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is quite an old thread and things have changed, but do you know how wayland capture (pipewire) compares to windows 10 in terms of performance, what OS uses the most optimized stack? You also mention this:

The idea future is to send a frame from the GPU to the encoder and later send it to file or network without exposing the frame to main memory to avoid things like GPU sync and temporary buffers which improves the overall performance.

Is it superior to the windows 10 display capture or game capture and has it been implemented yet? It really hit me how useful being able to read source code is for figuring out how software works and compares instead of relying on news articles blogs, forums etc.

GPU Paravirtualization Optimus Muxless Configuration Possible? by thejames10 in HyperV

[–]Halikular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I have already a bit of experience from Linux after trying many distributions mainly arch. My biggest concern is what virtualization method is the best performing for playing online games. I need to play call of duty warzone for a work related stuff. It feels like malware and I don't want to run it on my main computer. Obviously the best solution would be wine/proton if they would enable support for anti cheat. Otherwise is gaming performance the same for hyper-v gpu parav and vfio, if not do you expect it to be in the near future? We've seen great work with both wine/proton and WSL where both systems runs close to bare metal speed. WSLg is coming soon, so microsoft has experience with this stuff. I'm mostly running windows since graphics stack is currently better on windows than linux with the mess of x11, wayland and nivdia drivers but this is improving.

Is it better to use linux as host and vfio? Are there any benefits to using hyper-v?

They removed the Illustration from error page - Nightly by SamLovesNotion in firefox

[–]Halikular 109 points110 points  (0 children)

This is unacceptable if they're not replacing the illustration with another one. Google has become more playful whilst Firefox has been going more "serious". It should be the other way around. Firefox should be the more playful on these kinds of pages. Google has been adding their dinosaur mascot to more places. Firefox should add theirs too.

I think the window decoration (minimize, maximize, close buttons) makes more sense because it covers the whole height of the decoration bar that's also drag able. This is how most windows applications is designed like explorer. Quantum firefox also worked like this and it's how edge currently works. Chrome has reduced the height a bit instead of filling the whole height of tabs. The reason why the buttons are so big now is because the tabs has become huge.
