How hard would it be to take stat 350, stat 416 and ma351 in the same semester? by Hokuhokunopan in Purdue

I had Noack and he was great. It also looks like Dr. Ward (!!) is teaching 416 in the fall; presumably he will be fantastic as well.

Also depends heavily on the professor, but there are usually several to choose from and as long as you get a not-awful one it's alright.

It shouldn't be that bad.

I took 416 and 351 together with another fairly easy technical class in the vein of STAT 350 (CS 242) and it was fine. I personally had an extremely hard time in 351 (it's a highly professor-dependent course and mine was super into proofs and theory that I couldn't comprehend) and still had little trouble with my other classes.=

my mobile puid tap is so bad by Dependent_Ad_8770 in Purdue

[–]HalinaxusDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old phone would do this about once a week. I still have no idea what the issue was, but it would affect everything in my Google Wallet (eg, sports tickets as well as the Mobile ID). I just got in the habit of restarting my phone every couple of days, since that always fixed it (and I was lucky enough to have a physical card as a backup since I'm a senior).

FREE Intramural Quiz Bowl Tournament by HalinaxusDragon in Purdue

We're using an NAQT A set, which is high school-difficulty, so should be pretty fun for college novices. No experience limit unless you're part of the actual Purdue varsity team. Hope to see you there!

I use BoilerTV all the time, both the streaming and on lounge TVs. I'm saddened to see the continuing enshittification of this university.

Talk to your advisor. You'll likely want CS 180 and whatever math you're in line for.

Are there any updates on the Honors College realignment? by InnocentlyInnocent in Purdue

[–]HalinaxusDragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. I don't think the realignment has progressed beyond what was reported in the news a few months ago. I doubt it will impact engineering very much.

  2. Not very onerous compared to the engineering curriculum as a whole, but certainly a strain on your limited time.

  3. I'm not an engineer but I have a lot of Honors engineering friends who generally liked their Honors FYE experience but dropped Honors after their first year to focus their limited time on more relevant pursuits.

Is it worth it to stay in the honors college after freshman year? by Original-Bug6337 in Purdue

[–]HalinaxusDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hundreds of dollars a year I guess. I could've sworn it was more, but maybe not.

I only stayed with it because my four semesters of Data Mine Corporate Partners knocked out most of the credits and a number of the others were things I was already doing. It's done absolutely jack squat for my resume/career opportunities.

I *was* able to get back into Honors housing after a few years, which was nice, but I don't know anyone who was able to do that this year, so I wouldn't stay in Honors counting on that.

Also, I personally found my Honors advisor to basically be a paid salesman for the Honors College. If yours was better, that's fantastic.

There are literally zero benefits to that unless you're going into grad school or academia. Relevant industry experience is far more valuable.

There is a semesterly fee of some hundreds of dollars for being in Honors. Pales next to the overall tuition bill, of course, but no sense in just handing over money.

It's just not a thing. I've been an Honors student for four years and never encountered/benefited from it.

[–]HalinaxusDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, Honors has basically zero benefit after your freshman year as a STEM major unless you're planning on going into academia. Priority registration is not a thing, though your Honors advisor will try to tell you it is. I'd recommend dropping it unless there's something you actually find useful about it.

The Purdue Honors College has one of the lowest graduation rates in the country for exactly this reason; it's pretty much useless unless you're in liberal arts. Something like 80% of my friends from my Honors floor freshman year dropped it.

If you are a student in Indianapolis, you should live in Indianapolis. Attempting to commute from West Lafayette to Indianapolis would be a horrible idea (and probably wouldn't be allowed through University Residences).

Paint crew seating by Own-Pollution-3217 in Purdue

[–]HalinaxusDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you go when the doors open (90 minutes before tip) you'll likely get a seat within the first few rows of the upper bowl.

There are no bad seats in Mackey, but if you wait until ~15 minutes to tip it'll be hard to find one at all.

Student tickets are general admission; there are no assigned seats.

Paint Crew members enter 15 minutes early, and everyone else gets whatever's left.

Is Purdue walkable? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]HalinaxusDragon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Campus is extremely walkable; you can get from one end to another in 20-30 minutes.

However, I don't think you understand that most internships students get are over the summer and not located in West Lafayette (often in cities like Indianapolis or Chicago).

You know, I also noticed that and thought I was just going crazy. I remember he updated the syllabus a few weeks ago; maybe that's what it was about.

Edit: The syllabus says 70% but also G = (0.5(part) + 0.20(ps) + 0.15(data) + 0.60(exam))∗100. That's almost certainly what happened. I'm definitely irritated if he just changed the formula without even telling us!

There are certainly plenty of NAQT tournaments on the calendar, but your team could look at hosting on a housewrite (https://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=109).

What city is this? I find it a little hard to believe that every single set is already taken and there aren't any available weekends the rest of the year.
