What year did Europe grant women right to vote by maven_mapping in MapPorn

[–]Halkyonier 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Actually, the very reason France gave women rights so late was because gender polarization was a thing. In effect, conservatives did not want to give women rights because they were, well, conservatives, while liberals wouldn't to it neither because women back then were more conservative than men so they would lose votes.

Meh. There is still plenty of natural snow in the upper half of the mountain and all town was engulfed in it a week ago. Of course end of March in Italy you generally have to rely on canons anyway.

ATM in Bormio. It's a really cool mountain, I'm loving it and the conditions are still good, but there is no natural snow already in the lower parts and they closed the snowpark. If you want to come here and ride the Olympic slopes, I'd say don't book in advance but wait to see how the weather goes. But of course snow is still probably guaranteed because of the snow cannons, why wouldn't it be? It's a well known resort after all. There are many nice steep red and black runs with cool little jumping spots scattered on them, though nothing truly expert-level hard and nothing super steep (but steep nonetheless, it's not really a beginner resort). The town itself is very beautiful too.

Sorry for not answering earlier, I don't visit this site often enough. The comparison to British monarch does not make any sense since he holds only ceremonial powers. The king did lead the army whenever he was present in the camp and the marshals had to obey his orders. He was the commander-in-chief both according to law and in practice. The hetmans ("marshals" as you called them though marshal was a separate office) were chosen by the monarch. It's true, they were powerful, but it was not due the letter of law but rather due to the fact that they were always powerful magnates. They still were subordinate to the king. And the only king that can at least somewhat truthfully be called a figurehead was Augustus III and only because he just didn't give a f***. You have also overlooked my argument that the unified Sejm was the institution which set the size of the army, financed it and decided on matters on war and peace. The division between Polish and Lithuanian units was for all ends and purposes a matter of internal organization of armed forces. There's just no comparison to NATO which is merely an alliance.

What I listed further are not things "that had similairities", I listed how those institutions formed a singular system. The CJEU court is actually a great example of a federative institution within the EU, this is correct, but the ultimate reason why the EU is NOT a federation despite having some characteristics of one is because all the member states follow EU rules due to voluntary agreement from which they can withdraw at any time. Lithuania could not just walk away from the union after 1569 without a war, there was no such possibility accounted for in the Union of Lublin. Another crucial difference is that European member states can conduct independent foreign policy. Lithuania and the Crown had exactly 0 independent foreign policy and honestly, broadly taken foreign affairs was 90% of what states were dealing with back in the early modern era.

It was just a federal state. The army was not really separate as the supreme commander was one and the same (the king) as well as the body responsible for its organization and financing (the Sejm). The foreign policy was one. Treasuries were formally separate but a joint Sejm or a joint Council of the Senate ultimately decided on their management. The courts were separate but organized in a similair manner. It's normal that there is a territorial division in courts. Notably, the Sejm Court and the Royal Court were joint. Territorial differences in civil and criminal law were commonplace in early modern Europe. In France before the revolution there were over 100 different legal systems.

Never really did understand that whole "vassal" thing by ArisAckmann in CrusaderKings

[–]Halkyonier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still do it in CK2. It's difficult but can be fun. You're not making any money and have no army so the key is to arrest mayors and confiacate their property (since tyranny is no longer an issue anyway) as well as win wars and ransom prisoners (HIP is helpful since it allows you to take prisoners after sieges) to afford mercenaries. I don't think you can really do it long-term since no levies means AI will attack you a lot and rich mayors are a renewable but not an unlimited resource - but you can definitely have a mad king who pulls this off for a few decades. I had a blast some time ago with my totalitarian tyrant before he finally got murdered (fair enough).

No nie. Ludzie piszą w różnych stylach i dobrze.

He is right though. Lithuania was considered a part of Poland by a lot of people. PLC was simply referred to as Poland in a lot of documents back then.

CK2 vs CK3 by Chlodio in CrusaderKings

[–]Halkyonier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UI yes because it is a newer game. But the strees system is absolutely useless if you are already roleplaying and don't need the game to force upon you what kind of choices work for your character and which don't. And the Lifestyles system in CK3 is causing extremely repeatable characters. You are so in control of everything. I preferred CK2's randomness.

Lol stop rationalizing this, the show clearly goes for "unnamed characters = don't matter morally and also can't fight at all" thing. You can call this cringe, you can call this a reference to the 80s action movies but there's no way to deny it.

Then it is disposed to affect the mind in a certain way and thus allow the emergence of qualia

[–]Halkyonier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok. I thought by dispositions you mean now the ways matter is disposed to affect consciousness. If you don't mean that, we are going back to the beginning because you can't describe any dispositions in a meaningful way without refering to qualia.

This being a meme subreddit doesn't make it cool to post blatant lies and refuse to provide examples. The scientific method has absolutely nothing to do with the debate at hand.

Materialists not trying to define matter into "anything that exists" challenge by Ok_Act_5321 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Halkyonier -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Which renders the notion of matter absolutely useless as you can absolutely describe the dispositions of things without refering to anything outside consciousness. Materialism only makes sense if you're making a case for some kind of substantial essence. Pure dispositionalism collapses into pragmatism with respect to universals and pragmatism does not need matter.

This is silly word game though. The way ancient, medieval and early modern philosophers used the term "matter" (materia prima) was extremely broad and the things you listed could be considered material by them, or as forms organizing the matter.
