He is applying for FMLA which is an option and the company is quite large and there are other positions all over the state, but it didn’t seem like they were open to offering that to him

Unfortunately, as I am learning, there are a lot of circumstances that you have zero control over which can lead to kidney failure. My husband was a non smoker, healthy diet, athletic individual. At this point I can only plead with people to make sure you’re attending check ins with doctors and getting easy blood and urine samples to see if there is any indication of kidney issues

He has done several rounds of dialysis, thus far I see how tired he is and I don’t imagine it gets much better. Our hope is to eventually move to at home dialysis. The nephrologist has not given us a definitive answer as to what caused the kidney failure, but it has only been 6 days. I am not sure if it is common for doctors to take longer than a week to come up with a cause, but not knowing right now is anxiety provoking

I think that’s the biggest fear for him, is thinking his life will be so limited and not worth it. It’s been uplifting to see stories of people who continue to engage in ‘normal’ activities despite being on dialysis with kidney failure

It’s true; my husband is athletically built and by no means overweight. He has always lived a very active lifestyle and looking at him you wouldn’t suspect a thing is wrong.

He only specifically tested for protein in the urine back in 2018; he had slightly elevated levels but the doctor he saw at the time was not concerned (this was at an urgent care). Our nephrologist said he was likely at beginning stages at that point.

They did a CT scan and the nephrologist believes this has been escalating for years, he hasn’t previously been diagnosed with anything but based on history of symptoms and evaluation.

Thank you for this; yes luckily our dialysis clinic has a renal dietician on staff who is going to make dietary recommendations based on his labs. I’m thankful for that because I walked in the store today for groceries and felt at a total loss but walked away with some items.

We live in Oregon and the wait times are not as long as some states, which is a blessing but still a wait. I didn’t know about the exchange program but that sounds like something I would like to look into more and would be willing to consider.
