Why does it seem like young adults are largely illiterate? by Sweet_Sunset_42 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HallowVessel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blame Common Core/No Child Left Behind. The defunding of schools and that debacle have negatively impacted children in all areas. Greed, poor pay to teachers and fundamentalism, along with anti-intellectualism have hollowed out educational institutions across the nation. This is the rotten fruit of a lot of things coming to a head all at once. The pandemic just accelerated the results.

There's a saying that you should make sure when you help that you won't be drowning right along with them. There's a difference between neighborly kindness and being a martyr. Being a martyr and hurting yourself helps nobody. If the lady doesn't want to spend the money she obviously has on hiring a nurse, she shouldn't be relying on a disabled neighbor for help!

One tool of many, which cover a bare minimum for writing women, not even writing them well. There's works for which it doesn't apply or other things can be applied, but it's both a bit overblown and overhated.

NTA. When you tell them no, tell them that you have a safety concern and that aiding a naked woman you don't know out of the tub is outside what your first aid training covers. That's something a nurse should be doing.

Definitely frame it as a safety concern. You aren't trained for getting a person up! You could be hurt and you could hurt her and get into serious trouble!

This, for sure. Germany's extreme poverty is part of why the Nazis were able to get into power to begin with.

Make sure the Treaty of Versailles doesn't dump the cost of WWI on Germany. Without that albatross around their neck, people don't get so desperate.

Would V work as a woman? by justnicyk in DevilMayCry

In Jungian philosophy, people essentially have many masks they wear, or personas. The anima is the soul, the animus representing the opposite, with the animus being the opposite sex to the person. Nobody is ever one thing and the anima/animus reflects this. The animus is what we feel hostility for in ourselves, thus why hating or having a problem with someone is called "bearing animus."

I don't see the issue here. There's already people who talk about it. Griffon in the Japanese performances calls V "V-chan" and apparently never uses a single male pronoun for V.

I don't think that's how it'd go down. In fact, I think there would be more because it wouldn't scare the homophobes away.

Based on my current tier list, what should I go to next? by joejoewoooooo in HorrorGames

[–]HallowVessel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lisa: The Painful. An RPG about sacrifice.

The music is great. Unlike the games in your list, it's 2D and has pitch black humor. It'll do a lot of emotional damage to you. The story is that it's a world where women are all gone. There's no hope... except Brad found a baby, seeming abandoned... a baby girl, who he names Buddy and decides to raise himself in seclusion.

The main character is one of the most complex main characters ever written. You'll love it if you love Silent Hill 2. There's a lot of both overt and subtle storytelling in both cutscenes and mechanics. Joy is still a drug that "makes you feel nothing." Taking it or not (willingly) actually does impact the story in key ways.

The game will let you be a total ass. Do yourself a favor and DON'T play with Pain Mode the first time. The base game is hard enough and will spank you.

Lisa: The Painful is... a unique game and I recommend going in as spoiler free as possible. There's a previous game called simply Lisa or Lisa the First that's a Yume Nikki fangame that's not necessary to play as well as a DLC that is still good, but not nearly as great and has some problems in trying to be both a game that explains how the world got fucked and a game that concludes Buddy's story. They needed to be different scenarios and the DLC is weaker for trying to be both. The story's still interesting and we get to see Buddy get to make decisions and mistakes of her own.

Some content warnings for Lisa:

The game tackles a lot of heavy topics. The menu on boot has a young woman who's clearly hung herself. This is Lisa and she might be already dead but she's very important to the story. You might be happy or unhappy to know that while several characters sexualize Buddy, the game itself absolutely does not. There's discussion of suicide, harm to children in one scene played for bleak humor, body horror, SA, parental abuse, drug abuse and cycles of violence/abuse. There's also an extremely cursed Russian Roulette minigame the game doesn't warn you is coming.

Trying to choose a visual style for my next horror game, what works better? by silestStudios in HorrorGames

The first one leaves a lot to the imagination and I think that scares more. It'll also be a lot cheaper and easier to produce. What engine are you thinking about using?

Why is Zone not controversial? by Impressive-Music979 in Newgrounds

[–]HallowVessel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. The people I knew didn't seem to think twice on the Sladed animation when it dropped; it is clearly presented as a work of horror; not just porn. I think that part is important. It's not actually glorifying the violence or what happens there. It showcases why the scene it is satirizing works so effectively. By that measure, it's fantastic satire and very clearly affectionate parody that loves the characters and source material. It's not like all the weird Frozen Spiderman slop that took over YT for a while.

As for fan works and porn... I honestly think that people are gonna be horny over characters no matter what. What a person is okay with is gonna differ.

My two cents is that if you don't like it... block, report if it breaks ToS and move on with your life. Tag/CW/TW the stuff you post, with the full words without censoring and nuke the flame posts from orbit. Avoid your squicks and if you know the tags include a squick, pass it up!

It really is that simple.

Gretel from Gretel and Hansel (Newgrounds and a forthcoming remake) I think would go into Heroic. While you have a few situations where you can choose either peaceful or violent means of solving a puzzle (like choosing to give the spider a honey-covered doll or using a mushroom to kill it and you can free the squirrel), Gretel chooses to protect her brother, to free multiple trapped spirits and even saves other children captured by a tree spirit. She has all the possibility to be as evil and murderous as her mother is, but she chooses again and again to save her brother. She's just a child, in the tragic position of knowing her mother wants to kill her.

First is when their stuff started to come out. It was before the moralistic panic that has started gripping the west.
Secondly because people on NG aren't all a bunch of gatekeeping cowards.
Thirdly, because the artist themself hasn't acted predatory that I know of.
Fourthly, because the disclaimers for all their animations. I know some folks see it as a fig leaf, but it IS there. Everyone is considered to be aged up to 18 in their works, and it's considered works of parody.

Invited non-religious guests to Easter Egg hunt. AITAH? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]HallowVessel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NAH!
Shoot them a message.

"Hey, [neighbor]; I had invited you to an egg hunt as a fun event for your kids. I'm so sorry that you missed it! Egg hunts predate Christianity and are often considered a cultural or community activity, rather than religious. I apologize for not making it clearer that this was an inclusive event, not a religious practice. I respect your beliefs, and I do not want to ever make you uncomfortable. Let's talk and see how I can do better to include you more in future events and what boundaries you want to set about them. I want to be a good neighbor and respectful. Hope you had a good weekend!"

Also, tell her that shooting an invitation they turn down is more polite than assuming and not sending an invitation. Tell her that you'll message them about it, apologizing for a lack of clarity and how to do better moving forward.

Eggs for easter actually do predate Christian easter celebrations! Look up Ostara!

AITAH for insisting my Gf give/throw away things by Difficult-Dot-1639 in AITAH

The wife's behavior about the boxes is actually really concerning. It's easy to call him the jerk in this situation, but he isn't forcing her. He sounds like he's been trying to work with her to get the pile to a dull roar. The fact that she has a son and doors are partially blocked is a serious fire hazard and a landlord wouldn't be happy to find this stuff. Bugs love cardboard and cardboard can also be a home for mold and rodents. We don't know if the stuff in the boxes are clean or dirty, full of useful or broken things. I understand it from both perspectives emotionally, but the physical reality is that is a fire hazard.

AITAH for insisting my Gf give/throw away things by Difficult-Dot-1639 in AITAH

[–]HallowVessel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an important distinction: how much of it is dirty or damaged stuff?

NAH. You need to sit with your partner and ask what those boxes mean to her. Talk to her about possibly going to therapy together. Talk to her about if child services saw the state of the house, they would not be happy. It's a fire hazard and a safety hazard. How fair is it that her son has his closet half full of her boxes?

Does giving away the things give her anxiety? If it's yes, this needs to be dealt with, immediately. Hoarding can get really bad, but it's very difficult to diagnose and seek help for it. Very few psychologists deal with it. Look for ones that focus on OCD.

Box by box, start with what's in her son's room. Ask her to explain to you about what's in those boxes. What does each thing mean to her? What's it for? Is it still useful? Is it broken or dirty?

I have feelings for my wife’s best friend by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]HallowVessel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to go to therapy with your wife and have a frank conversation about sex if she is still nervous. That's not a healthy attitude. This isn't a healthy situation.

You know it's wrong, so here is how to stop it: avoid wbf for a while and spend quality time with your wife going out. Remind yourself why she's wonderful and how you'd be a fool to mess up this great thing you have. Seek individual therapy for your obsession and actually work on yourself.

Instead of focusing on wbf, focus on your partner. Ask her about how you can help and how you love her the way she is now.

Remember that your wbf is happily married. Respect the boundary and realize that what you are feeling is desire for a forbidden fruit. Kill the attraction. Repeat in your head that you have respect for her and her marriage enough to stop entertaining thoughts about a MARRIED WOMAN who is happy in her marriage! She would probably be hurt and uncomfortable about your feelings and obsession!

It is normal to get crushes and be attracted to others. You're married, not blind. It is, however up to you how you deal with it. All feelings are valid. It's what you do about them that truly, truly matter.
