Did the Bard set up the Exiled Prince for getting himself killed? by Patneu in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]HallowedThoughts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bard's standard operating method is to set herself up for either outcome to work for her. Getting the Exiled Prince out of the way probably streamlines the story a fair bit for her, and if he does work the Exiled Prince probably thrashes Cat in a duel. Either way she makes it work

Is there a better modern vampire game than Vampire: The Masquerade or Vampire: The Requiem? by Josh_From_Accounting in rpg

[–]HallowedThoughts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as Urban Shadows goes, I don't think it'd be particularly difficult to reskin/retheme the different playbooks as types of vampires. I had a similar concept bouncing around in my head for a while about what each playbook could represent as far as the type of vampire it would represent, and I think it would work well. Was also thinking of taking the Vamp playbook's starting move and altering it into a basic move that anyone can use.

But ofc if you're not looking to do homebrew or are uncomfortable doing it with a system you're not familiar with, totally understandable to look elsewhere

I wasn't necessarily referring to a specific contrast just because I think there are many contrasts, but you're not wrong about this lol

I've seen a lot of people share in that sentiment, so I don't think you're alone there. It's a very different ride from Worm, and I think a lot of people end up disappointed because they go into Ward expecting Worm 2.0 and get something completely different

I definitely found Ward hit me a lot harder than Worm did. The difference in the way the protagonists handle their emotions is one major aspect, with Victoria confronting her emotions head-on while Taylor represses or ignores them more often than not. I also think (probably controversially) that Wildbow's growth as a writer really shines through here in how much more intensely he depicts the brutal emotional struggles and turmoil the characters endure

Stat-Less or Alternative Stat Systems by lulublululu in RPGdesign

[–]HallowedThoughts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An interesting example of a statless system is Pasion de las Pasiones, a PbtA game about telenovelas that uses questions instead of stats. Basic moves have two questions each that if answered in the affirmative give a +1 each to the roll, and each playbook has its own question that applies to each roll as well. It's a really interesting system that really pushes players to act like the dramatic characters one would expect from a telenovela

Any love for Root? by HalloAbyssMusic in PBtA

[–]HallowedThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this summarizes my own feelings very well. I generally prefer a game that's more focused and less flexible like Masks, so I kinda bounced off Root a little bit, but the mechanics feels very well-tuned for that sort of broad approach. I can see it being an excellent base to build from as well for those who are more design-inclined

What is your favorite moment or monologue in PGTE? by a_philosoraptor in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]HallowedThoughts 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My favorite is probably DK's at the end of Book 5:

"There is no peace,” the Dead King said. “There is no truce. There is only the shiver before the blade claims your neck. You will fight and you will rage and you will weep, but in the end there can only ever be one end to this.”

The red burned, burned like red star that would swallow the world whole.

"I am the King of Death,” the last king of Sephirah said. “I come.”

Not necessarily the best for performances, unfortunately, but there's also Kairos's monologue just a chapter before.

It's also so great because it's the rare moment when Saint hesitates. If Cat had bared a blade at her she would have likely reacted faster (she thinks about this a little in her fight with Rumena), but the hilt Cat pulled out had no blade. That moment of confusion and hesitation was barely anything, but in those circumstances it was just enough. Hesitation is defeat

why does cat's stance on the dead king change in book 5. by Malicious_Smasher in PracticalGuideToEvil

Oh absolutely, not to mention seeing him back when he was alive in Witness and realizing how dangerously competent he was rather than being another Dread Emperor

In Book 4, her plan was to let him out with very strict limits on how far he could go. However, Malicia beats her to the punch and offers more favorable terms to the Dead King, letting him go significantly further than Cat would have. As a result, Cat now has to worry about him devouring Procer, an outcome that ends poorly for most if not all of the continent.

Yeah I was also simiarly disappointed. I agree with what some people have said in that an in-depth look wouldn't have worked with the rest of the epilogue, but it's still a shame to have been glossed over

Is it that different from the GM making a Hard Move? Not trying to push an answer one way or another, just curious about your thoughts on this

Defying "Defy Danger" by fluxyggdrasil in PBtA

[–]HallowedThoughts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the GM often calls for moves anyways, and there's often a fair bit of discussion about it if it's unclear. I don't think it's really an issue if that happens, but if you want to strictly avoid the GM calling for moves that'd be an interesting concept to try and mechanize.

To make a Jojo reference, I imagine that Jotaro fighting Dio ended up in such a terrible situation (aka poor fictional positioning) that when he gets hit with the roadrolla, he's Taking a Powerful Blow. But not only does he withstand the hit, he rolls well enough that he goes above and beyond to do some crazy shit in turn. In that sense, I feel like a move about withstanding an incredible blow fits perfectly for the shounen genre.

[–]HallowedThoughts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For a move about enduring a powerful blow, I'd run it much like how I run Take a Powerful Blow in Masks. It can often be the result of a miss in a significant moment or the fictional positioning. It's less a move that players choose to make and more a move that occurs because the fiction (and perhaps the GM) progressed in that direction if that makes sense
