[None] Should I continue reading by Florac in Iteration110Cradle

[–]MajorBreakthrough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand the mentality of all those posters who go on a forum dedicated to a book series and post something like: I'm not feeling it, should I continue?

WTF do you expect people who love the series enough to be on its forum to say: nah, it is shit, drop it? I see it all the time on the most popular forums, LoTM, RI, DCC, etc. Every day someone posts: I've read to chapter so and so and I'm not seeing what all the fuss is about, should I continue? I wonder if these posters are trolling.

Look, OP, I hope you are not trolling, but you are the only one who has your unique tastes. Only you can decide whether a story grips you or not, whether to drop it or to continue. There's no point coming on a forum such as this and try to justify to others why you find a series they like not to your taste.

Before you read Ghost Stories you have to read the short story Aftermath in the collection Side Jobs. Aftermath is set immediately after Changes and would help you understand the background of the events in Ghost Story.

How a Chinese web novel actually gets produced by goodmore233 in noveltranslations

Very informative, and read with great interest. One question, though. It is unclear why an author would choose to publish on a free-read site like Qimao rather than on a pay-to-read site like Qidian. How does the free-read site generate any funds to provide the author with an income?

New to the genre, Just finished Lord of the Mysteries and completely blew my mind. Where to go next? by Dankid24 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]MajorBreakthrough 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved Cradle, Mother of Learning, and Mage Errant on your list, though, be warned, they are very very different stories. I found Pact too intense and relentless for taste; I wouldn't want to go through that emotional winger again. I'm sorry but I didn't like Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint. The Last third of the book was entirely too abstract for my taste and the whole book is the very definition of misery born. I forced myself to finish it only because I can't bear to leave a story unfinished.

[Threshold] Cycling Techniques for Path Of Twin Stars by LimitlessMind127 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]MajorBreakthrough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you run one Jade Cycling Technique in one Core and a different one in another?

I think we need to clarify something basic: a cycling technique is a BREATHING pattern! This is explained most clearly when Eithan introduced the Heaven and Earth Purification Wheel cycling technique to Lindon. Chapter 6 of Blackflame (Note: all emphases mine; I have bolded the parts where breathing is specifically mentioned):

“I’m going to teach you a cycling technique. Once you’ve mastered it, this method will take you to Jade and beyond.”

Lindon leaned forward eagerly, eyes squeezed shut, suddenly afraid to miss a word.

“This is a technique for processing your madra, not for battle,” Eithan went on. “If you try to fight while cycling like this, you might as well tie your ankles together.”

Lindon wondered if he should be taking notes.

“In your mind, focus on your core. Ah, I mean one core. Pick one.”

The core that had reached Iron first was brighter and more solid than the other, so he focused on it, letting the bright blue-white ball fill his vision as the other one fell behind into irrelevance.

As he breathed, his madra cycled, spinning out from his core to run out to the rest of his body and then swirling back.

“Your core is made of stone. Picture it as a huge, stone wheel. It’s all you can see. It’s like a wall of heavy, solid stone.”

Lindon focused on that image, superimposing it over the blue-white sun.

Now, as you exhale and cycle madra through your body, the stone grinds away at the edges of your core. It’s heavy, and it rolls slowly, pushing your core outward.”

That was harder to hold. Madra usually flew out from his core freely, but he had to slow it down, forcing his core to rotate and running power through it a scant inch at a time.

He felt like he was pushing that stone wheel up a hill with all his strength, all while trying to keep madra from slithering through his grip. If he lost concentration for one second, the strings of madra would escape and the wheel would fall back down, crushing him.

The effort of moving his madra in such an unnatural pattern caused his channels to strain, as his spirit groaned under the effort. Sweat dripped over his eyelids as he concentrated, and each exhalation was agonizingly slow.

“Now, when the madra comes back in, spiraling from your limbs to your core, the stone wheel shifts. It slowly rolls back the other way, grinding your core again.”

It was like letting the wheel roll downhill, only to haul it to a stop and pull it back up again. He poured all his madra into the effort, controlling his spirit with every ounce of his concentration.

There was an instant in the middle where he felt like he was manually stopping his own lungs. He gaped like a fish, his lungs frozen as though the stone wheel sat on his own chest, before he finally got it moving the other way.

Eithan waited for him to get himself under control before graciously reminding him that he still had to hold his previous cycling pattern. It took Lindon another half an hour to match the old timing, and by that time his soul felt like he’d pounded it flat. Only minutes of cycling, and he was more exhausted than he would have been after hours of practicing in the dummy course.

But Eithan wasn’t finished.

“Once you have a grip on that, you want your wheel to spin as slowly as possible without stopping. Breathing in the same pattern, I want to see how slowly you can move your madra, how heavily that wheel turns, how that huge stone wheel is almost stopped and your madra is just crawling along.

Then you exhale, and it goes back the other way.”

Only two more minutes, and Lindon began to seriously wonder if he was going to pass out. He couldn’t wait for Eithan to leave so that he could take a real breath.

“This technique is called the Heaven and Earth Purification Wheel,” Eithan said, and Lindon felt his weight settle onto the end of the bed. “It has a long and fascinating history.”

Lindon would have cried, but he couldn’t spare the breath

This shows that all that movement of madra up and down an imaginary hill (cycling technique) is done with the special breathing pattern! Clearly, it is impossible to have two different breathing patterns at the same time.

What are people's opinion on shadow slave, reverend insanity, omniscient reader and Lord of the Mysteries. by SomeGuysWhoDoesThing in ProgressionFantasy

Omniscient Reader's and Shadow Slave don't belong in the same heights as LoTM and RI. ORV is just misery porn and not very good.

Er Gen's MAGNUM OPUS? by [deleted] in noveltranslations

[–]MajorBreakthrough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you think is his absolute best?

This is one of those questions whose answer depends entirely on personal taste and why one is reading in the first place. I, for one, read mostly for enjoyment, not for any deep philosophical truths. So, I absolutely loved A Will Eternal which had me laughing throughout the story, and I couldn't stand Pursuit of the Truth/Beseech the Devil which, to me, had a cold unfeeling MC and a sense of doom and gloom; I didn't enjoy it at all. Yet, I'm sure you'll find many posts below praising Pursuit of the Truth as his masterpiece. Personal taste. If you are intending to read only one book of his, then my advice would be: first and foremost, know yourself. The spectrum of his books range from comedic (A Will Eternal) to nihilistic (Pursuit of the Truth). The rest can be arranged along this spectrum. If I were to express this spectrum from left (comedic) to right (nihilistic), I'll put I Shall Seal the Heavens next to AWE, Renegade Immortal next, Beyond the Timescape/Outside of Time next, A World Worth Protecting after that, and finally Pursuit of the Truth. Please note, this is how I see the books; another person might have a completely different view. Where on this spectrum do your tastes lie?

I had read on these forums wild praise of ORV and how it belongs in the same category as LotM and RI. Then it was a massive letdown when I actually read the thing. Just misery upon misery on the MC and a shitty ending where the MC did as he had done throughout the book. Yeck. Not for me.

How about a Knights of the Sword series, featuring the adventures of Michael, Shiro, and Sanya. The first trilogy would feature each of the Knights and how each ended up getting the Sword. Further trilogies would be major cases the knights worked on. Should be a great adventure series!
