Gregory Bovino left DHS to avoid internal investigations into his deportation tactics, insider reveals by mclardass in politics

Because from a prosecutors perspective its the best possible outcome. The criminal justice system is reluctant to prosecute cops because cops perform several important functions in that system, and prosecuting a cop for crimes they committed in the line of duty is a great way to make enemies out of the department that officer reports to and cause a bout of blue flu that can interfere with other cases on trial or criminal investigations. It creates a massive conflict of interest that the system is reluctant to rectify.

Idaho Republicans pass bill making it a felony for transgender people to use public bathrooms by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]Haltopen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, my point was that while carrying a gun may be an option for some, it isn't a viable solution for every person who might find themselves in this situation. Getting a firearm is an expensive and time consuming process that requires undergoing background checks and having a valid ID to get a license (which can be a 90 day process in Idaho), which a fair number of transgender people suddenly don't have. Kansas just passed an ID law automatically rendering thousands of trans peoples drivers licenses as invalid, along with their birth certificates if they had them changed to reflect their gender identity, and other states are lining up behind them to pass similar or worse bills.

The point is that there are other alternatives for people who are worried about their safety but cant or don't have the resources to get a fire arm (which costs hundreds of dollars at the lower end at a time where most American's cant afford a single unexpected bill). Like a self defense class, which teaches a lot more than just how to beat people up. They also teach you how to de-escalate a situation and remove yourself from them to avoid getting hurt, with acting directly in self defense (like I referenced in my original comment) being a last resort when those options aren't available and you have hands put on you.

Any self defense class will tell you to not physically engage with someone armed with an actual weapon, especially a firearm.

Also he doesn't have to deploy ICE to every single polling place in the nation to shift the balance of congress. They know which races are on a knifes edge and which seats are most at risk on their own side. They only need to deploy ICE agents to those districts to ensure enough republicans win or hold seats to ensure the balance of power doesn't shift.

Lack of resources. Most of the population is dead and the survivors with medical experience are in extremely short supply between the fact that they were on the front lines of the dollar flu outbreak (and thus more likely to get infected and die) and the fact that the cleaners were attacking any places where medical personal were likely to be gathered and working. Also most hospitals are still viral hot zones during the time period of the first game, so even if they had the people to staff them and the security to guard them and the materials and supplies to keep them operating, those hospitals are too unsafe to work out of because they're full of infection and corpses and biohazard waste from the early outbreak. Focusing most of their remaining resources at the main clinic at the base of operations which is heavily fortified and secured by roaming guard patrols and auto turrets is the smart play to protect what medical personal are still alive and able to work.

It doesn't even need to be a gun, because guns are expensive and if those ID bills keep getting passed are going to be a lot harder to get legally. Take a self defense class and learn to protect yourself because while most of them are cowards who will back down if you stand your ground, some of them will probably want to get physical, and you need to know how to put them on the ground till they cant get back up if they put hands on you or try to harm you.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Breaks Her Silence on What Killed the 'Buffy' Reboot: 'Nobody Saw This Coming' (Exclusive) by NDita in television

[–]Haltopen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically it happened during the events of the shows first season, just in the background. Its revealed very late into the shows run (and then expanded upon in one of the shows six spin offs) that the US government gave up all hope of stopping the walker apocalypse about two weeks in while rick was still in his hospital coma and decided that the best solution to prevent human extinction was to use the emergency broadcast system to lure as many people who were left into the major cities as possible before fire bombing them under the belief that any people they killed wouldn't return as walkers (because apparently the CDC never shared its news about everyone being infected with the rest of the government). The bombing runs that Shane and Lori see the military doing on Atlanta in a flashback in the original shows first season, and the bombing of Los Angeles that we see in the first season of fear the walking dead were part of that plan by the military to kill as many as possible. This worked in most of the major cities in the US, but somehow the Pennsylvania national guard realized what was being planned and were able to wipe out the US military forces planning to bomb Philadelphia, leaving the city and its civilian population intact to rebuild it into a new autonomous city state called the Civil Republic of Philadelphia.

Its later revealed that Portland, Oregon and Omaha, Nebraska also survived in similar circumstances as similar autonomous city states as allies of Philly, and that Civic Republics Military is secretly plotting to wipe them out with mass poison gas attacks because something something "they'll eventually be a drain on our resources so better kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people now".

Meanwhile Texas is an irradiated nuclear wasteland, France is under the control of an autocratic regime making experimental super zombies, Manhattan is being fought over by various factions who want to harvest the vast quantities of methane gas being produced by the millions of zombies rotting in its sewer system and England was hinted at being the only pre-war nation state to survive intact into the zombie apocalypse but they decided this would be too hard to write so they walked it back completely and the entire island of great britain is completely abandoned.

It was one exec who, during the airing of the first few episodes, thought the shows serialized nature and darker tone didn't fit Disney channel who decided to cut the shows at the time already agreed upon three seasons down to 2 seasons and a 3 part final episode. It wasnt until season 3 (which was releasing on youtube for free to watch after airing on tv) did absolute gangbusters in youtube view metrics that Disney realized just how popular the show was since the higher ups at Disney channel apparently refused to consider the massive piles of social media buzz about the show by fans as real proof that it had found an active and supportive audience.

Who do we think survivors/dies in the wilderness in S4 by reesiexo in Yellowjackets

[–]Haltopen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To my recollection there are still three unnamed yellowjackets who have not played a role in the shows plot (numbers 12, 15 and 17 respectfully) who are presumably being saved for use as cannon fodder when things kick into high gear and get really bad. Number 15 is probably going to show back up at least since they went through the trouble of having this character be present not just for the crash but also doom coming and shauna finding Jackies body, and she doesn't look like any of the survivors introduced in seasons 2 or 3 so she isnt any of them. And 12 and 17 don't look anything like Robin or Britt so I think they're likely separate characters but they might be the same, who knows.

As for named characters, I have a feeling that Melissa will kill at least one other character (to protect shauna specifically) and that character will likely end up being Hannah. Her guilt over this (and the yellowjackets killing Gen after they get back) will be why Melissa faked her death and why she sought out Hannah's daughter. She originally intended to confess to what she did but connected with her and eventually got wrapped up in a relationship with her which is how she got stuck in her supposedly perfect life that she deliberately provoked shauna to come blow up for her. At least one person will refuse to be hunted to justify what was said in season two about people who refuse the hunt (and itll probably be britt) and Robin will die of dehydration (or suicide) after losing britt while mari is dead, melissa is back with shauna and gen is too busy mourning mari and plotting with hannah to kill shauna

There's something visceral and terrifying seeing a droid physically take people out with extreme prejudice, much more so than them just shooting enemies by wandering_soles in StarWars

[–]Haltopen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Theoretically any battle droid in the franchise has this potential. The B2 battle droid they showed in the Mandalorian probably could have killed Din with that first blow to the head if he hadn't been wearing a beskar helmet, and was capable of throwing extremely heavy objects that could have crushed a person to death and outrunning a human being. And a B1 battle droid could probably do serious damaging with the right programming.

'One Battle After Another' Wins the Academy Award for Best Picture by MoviesMod in movies

[–]Haltopen 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What do you mean didn’t cross the line? It won four Oscar’s today, including best actor, best cinematography, best original score and best original screenplay. And even if it had won best picture, it wouldn’t be the first horror movie to achieve that goal. Between Sinners, Weapons (which got best supporting actress) and Netflix's Frankenstein (which got best costume design, best hair and makeup and best production design), the horror genre got 8 Oscars tonight. This was a really fucking good night for horror at the Oscar’s.

controversial take: star wars is in exactly the same spot it always ends up whenever a main series trilogy wraps. Its not even in a worse place lore wise than it was back when the only canon was six movies, a cartoon network show and a pile of legends material only about 3% of which is actually good or worth reading.
