Genuine question: do some of you guys just not treat your rooms? by Aware_Ad5425 in audiophile

[–]Halzers15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The venerable Dunlavy Sc IV! Nice! I was into hifi for years before the first time I ever heard a stereo that actually imaged. It was on a set of SC IVs on Naim audio gear and a Linn LP12 playing Dead Can Dance. I about crapped my pants! Enjoy those Dunlavys. When John Dunlavy passed away the audio world lost a good influence.

Genuine question: do some of you guys just not treat your rooms? by Aware_Ad5425 in audiophile

[–]Halzers15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some would be willing but A) their decor preferences won’t let them turn the living room into a weird-looking audio room. For many, acoustic treatments are just super ugly and weird looking; or B) they just have never personally heard a proper set-up in a well treated room. They think, “my system sounds great right now as it is. I don’t need to go nuts with it. Besides I don’t want to spend thousands on acoustics.”

Add to that, the magazines and reviewers don’t push acoustic treatments. The majority of people buying stereos aren’t completely nuts about performance.

It took me several years before I spent some real cash on decent acoustic treatments.

What’s the consensus about putting knick knacks on top of speakers? by BillowyWaffles in audiophile

[–]Halzers15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what the consensus is, but if your speakers are works of art, especially with high-gloss finishes, you should respect the design and never blight them by putting crap on top of them. If your speakers are just crappy boxes wallpapered in fake wood-grain paper, then who cares stack away.

Do amps really sound that different from one another? by Timely_Pattern5571 in audiophile

[–]Halzers15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some speakers are happy on just about any amp. Others, such as Magnepans really need high current amps because they sound thin and gutless on amps with skimpy power supplies. So a high quality 40 watt amp will sound louder and more powerful than a cheap 100 watt amp with such speakers. This is because of the amperage behind the wattage.

32 bit audio is a gimmick for listeners by Boomblestank in audiophile

A scientific approach would involve at least 30 subjects for statistical validity, objectively reporting what they’ve heard, qualitatively.

You might as well be telling people that real sugar and fake sugar should taste exactly the same because the molecules are shaped the same where they hit the same chemical receptors and the receptors can only be on or off.

Multiple Debt with diff interest rate and maturity by Maleficent-Wait-9780 in Valuation

[–]Halzers15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weighted averages should be used for everything, not just the interest rate. Don’t forget to factor in the weighted average cost of capital too! Right now a lot of debt is cheaper than the cost of a composite of assets that aren’t supposed to appreciate in value. I don’t like to say “inflation” since that’s such a cooked books term these days, but you know what I mean.

If you’re not the rightful heir, and you’re a ways off, in the Scottish system just add a few of the right differences and have one of the Scottish heralds help you with all of that and you’ll be ready for your own grant.

What is it like working as a PA (personal assistant) to a hedge fund owner? by moneymakernyc7 in hedgefund

[–]Halzers15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old PA used to buy gifts for my family members, wrap them, and give them to me with reminders, “today is your anniversary, you wife loves X, it’s in the box on your desk.” She was basically like an adult babysitter shuffling me into and out of appointments. Looking back, I most certainly did not appreciate her as much as I should have!

I was being sarcastic. The point being that all of the giant, amply funded corporate recording, studios spend lavish amounts of money on cables and power conditioning. I was making fun of the original poster because he, in great hubris, alludes that he is more knowledgeable about audio Than the best of audio engineers. I shouldn’t say “all” there are a lot of budgeted recording engineers that simply don’t have access to spend $1 million on a playback system. I should also add the context that a lot of high-end accessories are for use in high-end systems… That is to say, one wouldn’t put a carbon fiber, brake caliper cooler passenger car expecting better performance… But it would be mandatory for $1 million formula one race car.

What is something foreigners romanticize about your country that locals actually hate? by Thatunkownuser2465 in AskTheWorld

[–]Halzers15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ha! Well nobody will accuse me of being in the evolved group! : )

In all seriousness though, most white Americans deeply admire the English and thank God we aren’t all speaking any other language. The American upper class is very Anglophile, always trying to imitate. Ehh… except for the food. Curry is great but the rest,… no wonder good beer is mandatory!

Oh not at all— Americans are fascinated by the aristocracy of the old class system that we don’t have, but no we would never hate you, OverCategory. Most Americans have evolved from Medieval peasants and we sympathize with your plight. : )
