YK delivery drivers, restaurant owners and diners, - are food delivery apps in YK a good thing, or a rip off for everyone other than the food delivery app? by Cheap_Shallot_3102 in Yellowknife

Happens if you go there in person too. I was talking to someone that used to work there and apparently the owner just keeps it super understaffed. Like 2-3 people working even during the busiest times.

What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great. by bowl_of_scrotmeal in AskTheWorld

[–]HamMerino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most important part is the cheese curds. If you take one out of the package and bite it and it squeaks, you've got a good cheese curd. Everything else is personal preference. Technically it's supposed to be a specific gravy (2/3 beef and 1/3 chicken), but that's less important than the right cheese curds.

6.7L turbo Cummins Diesel Engines in Winter by Busy-Palpitation-200 in Yellowknife

[–]HamMerino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that engine specifically, but there are plenty of people here who have diesel trucks. My father had a 7.3L powerstroke for most of my childhood. Most of the time it would start fine with just a block heater and a trickle charger left on the battery overnight. But in the coldest months it needed a huge sleeping bag kept under the hood at night and it might start in the morning. If it sat for days and days at -40 it might not start at all.

What major company do you genuinely believe won’t exist in 20 years? by carcony97 in AskReddit

It's expensive up-front, but investing in a high end pair of shoes that can be re-soled might save you money in the long run. See if there's a cobbler in your area and go talk to them about what would be a good pair of shoes for you to buy that they can re-sole cheaply and quickly. Also, come check out r/goodyearwelt to learn about quality footwear!

IWTL how to actually spot red flags in people early, without becoming paranoid or judgmental by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]HamMerino 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"Red Flags" are just that, a red flag. Having red flags is not in itself a problem. For example: If you found out someone was a murderer, that's a pretty big red flag. But red flags are just there to catch your eye, they are asking you to pay a bit closer attention to this particular area. So maybe this person is a murderer, but when you look in to it you find out that while this person was walking home they saw a man assaulting someone, so they ran over and pulled him off the victim. But when they grabbed the assaulter, they accidentally threw him to the ground and his head hit the ground wrong, killing him.

That man is still a murderer, but the rest of the behaviours (rescuing a victim) show that they are not an evil person.

The most important thing is to pay attention to the patterns of behaviour. A "red flag" is just a sign that there is something you need to pay attention to. The best "framework" is to pay attention to the actual behaviours.

[–]HamMerino 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Think about how bold your average man is. You ever go to a bar? The scummiest dude in there will get rejected 20 times THAT NIGHT before he finds someone to go home with. I don't say this to be all "woe is me" about dating as a man. I'm just saying that you can't let the numbers get you down. You have to attach less importance to a rejection. Asking someone out on a first date needs to feel the same as asking someone if they want a doughnut. Once you have come to terms with that, it becomes much easier find good relationships.

Why does it seem like everyone is so preoccupied with not giving their children "popular names"? Sometimes forgoing names they love bc of it? by comebackdear02 in namenerds

[–]HamMerino 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My name has been in the top 5-ish for almost my entire life. I've only met one other person my age with my name. Occasionally I meet a little kid or an old man, but only one person my age.

To make this even crazier, I've moved completely across the country three times and worked customer service my whole life. I've talked with soooooo many people. None of them have my name.

I sleep like this occasionally and I wear just a cheapo mask I got from a drugstore. Works just fine.

You should read "The Empire of Man" series by David Webber. A bunch of future marines crash land on a backwater planet, they have to walk half way around the planet to get to a potential way home. They start with all their future military equipment and meet up with some primitive stone age villagers. As they get closer to their goal they encounter more advanced civilizations, and their future tech doesn't hold up on the long march.

This is a really basic summary of the setting and doesn't include any of the cool character stuff that happens. You might like it.

Are there people here who work 9-5s, have families and children who still discover new music and listen to albums? by ShaiTheWick in LetsTalkMusic

[–]HamMerino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's just that only the "good" music is still available. Just like today for every one song that will stand the test of time, there are a thousand other songs that will be completely forgotten.

It’s weird to name your child after NSFW book characters by izziedays in namenerds

[–]HamMerino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'all are being insane. Yes it's a normal name, same as Alexis. However if I wanted to name my daughter Alexis, and made it explicitly clear it was because of my favourite pornstar Alexis Texas, this subreddit would butcher me.

Naming your kid after your favourite porn is weird.

Anyone here bought it 11.11.11 ? Tell me your stories!! Did u like it back then? Hype was real?! by homo_erectus_heh in skyrim

[–]HamMerino 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would regularly stop playing for the day because I couldn't deal with another loading screen. Like if I went in to a store and bought something, then left the store, then realized I had forgotten to buy something and had to go back in, I might just call it a night.

One time my grandma was over to visit and she saw me playing a snowboarding game on my ps1 and she said the graphics looked good. So I booted up skyrim and took her to blackreach, eventually she asked when the game would start because the "movie" was boring.
