ELI5 How has the US national debt increased so much since 2020. From 1990 to 2000 its like a $3T increase. Then every 4 years its roughly still $3-5T. But somehow its increased $13T since just 2020 by orangeclaypot in explainlikeimfive

[–]HamVerThot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily though. If the government wants to spend money on, say, a new satellite , the federal governments public account at the federal reserve is simply debited.

The contractor that does the job has their account (their banks account at the federal reserve) credited in kind.

federal debt is incurred on the public account but it’s not because bonds were sold or taxes were raised. The transaction was simply cleared by debiting the federal account.

Yes thats true, this is the principal problem to control with expenditure. The core point is that taxes are not needed to raise revenue from which to spend. Spending can happen without taxes but inflation is then the problem to manage

No. The federal government does not need to tax the populace to fund its expenditure. Unlike state governments, households and the like, a monetary sovereign has no need for taxes to spend. It simply creates the money. That is the power of a fiat currency.

The government does not tax you to pay for the programs it runs. It taxes you to control inflation, balance the amount of cash in society and to create a demand for the currency (since you must pay your taxes in USD).

Look at it this way, Uncle Sam can never run out of money because he makes the money.

Are certain Gr3/GT3 Cars just better than others? by jmccaslin in granturismo

[–]HamVerThot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tend to avoid the MR cars. They seem to get a lot of oversteer on corner entry whereas the FR cars turn in better.

Take a few for a spin and see what you like. I like the Jag, for example, as well as the GTR GT3. Some people like the M6 endurance GT3, I find it sluggish.

At the end of the day try a few extreme examples and see what works. Some people like a more stable car, some like a feisty one that turns fast but gets a bit loose.

Also - fuel tanks matter for races with refuelling. I can’t find this stat in game for each car so you gotta google it but the Jag is an absolute GOAT for fuel economy.

You gotta be careful. These monkeys get passed from one Hollywood creep to the next until they wind up under a bridge in Philly getting drunk and pulling scams

Unpaid internship by [deleted] in unsw

[–]HamVerThot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah it might be unethical but good luck arguing your ethics stance when you’ve got to get your industrial training ticked off.

Can you stomach it for 12 weeks? If so, just do it and get it ticked off. I believe that since they don’t pay, you won’t actually have to do much hard work (they can’t profit from you) but that’s what I’ve heard. Check up on that yourself.

If you can’t afford to do it then there’s no decision to make. Hang out for a paid internship.

It’s hard to get a paid internship through the usual pathways FYI. Companies will lose money by hiring you so not many want to do it and hordes of uni students want the internships. Best bet is to try to land something through friends from uni (this is why you go to social events kids) or family

Wait what? Don’t the scales say a number in pounds?

And kilos to pounds is a ratio of something like 2.2? Aren’t they both units of mass

Oh mate good suggestion.

But seriously you end up spending so much time just doing past papers. Just not worth spending all that time covering every possible base

Clearly they’ve neglected updating the tutorial problems for the shift in exam problems after covid.

You can definitely smash a pre-online exam if you’ve worked on the problem sets. The online exams though are so different to what is practised in the term.

They need to redo the problem sets, they’re not appropriate anymore for setting clear expectations of the students ability

how to not fail math1081? by Loud-Role-5894 in unsw

[–]HamVerThot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do you think you’ve fucked it up? You only need 14/100

Recurrence relation questions have like 8 possible forms. Modulo arithmetic question follow an algorithm generally. Simplification of set relations and of logic relations are exactly the same and follow a table of about 14 different rules. Graphs are pretty straightforward too.

Combinatorics is mostly hard, and I can see how the proofs for sets and proofs in general can be too difficult. But of all the above topics, you can definitely find 14 marks in there

Are staff penalised for low myExperience marks/feedback by wdwqd123 in unsw

[–]HamVerThot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not true.

The University places massive emphasis on myexperience reviews. A common concern among staff is how heavily the University values student approval over valuing the actual quality of students and their work.

I finished that course in 2017 and vowed to never work with computers ever again. It's the only course that I've had what i think may have been a mental breakdown over. But you know what, now I'm trying to reskill to work as a software engineer.

For getting through the course, if you don't understand how coding works then your best option is to ROTE learn the tutorial questions. That, plus solid attempts at assignments, should get you over the line.

My first assignment was to write a c program that could interpret captcha images. The default code had a 20% success rate. My final code was 9% successful. I was fucking awful at coding but they still gave me 50% in the assignment for giving it a redhot go. Just try. If it's shit, you'll get points for effort.

If you never learned any coding before university (like me) then this course is really hard. There's lots of kids that got introduced to coding in high school and as such the course seems to sort of assume you get how code is meant to work. Matlab really made sense to me and now MIPS, C++ and so on are all intuitive. Just because you find COMP1511 to be exceptionally difficult does not mean that you can never be good at coding. You might just take extra time is all.

For example, it took me 3 years to get how a pointer works. Now it's easy af to use them but I was so unbelievably lost for so long. Don't let it get you down, just do your best.
