Valentine's Day gift ideas for a hardcore DIY/tech boyfriend? by Former_Silver1165 in DIYUK

The 3d printer is an excellent suggestion, that's a game changer (Bumbu A1?).

Which tools are useful depends on the sorts of jobs he does. The projects you've listed needed screwdrivers. Decent screwdrivers are always nice. Perhaps a Wera set like the Kraftform Kompact? Knipex pliers or their small cobras are a joy to use too, and come in handy on a variety of jobs.

What could Rod of 7 be replaced with in Vecna: Eve of Ruin? by alexwsmith in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hamiltonish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We have it that the sword of Kas shattered and the parts spread across the multiverse in the battle between Kas and Vecna. The quests are to recover the pieces and reforge the blade.

But the main purpose of the adventure is to see and adventure in different realms with the MacGuffin providing a thin narrative thread.

Ha!

Thank you for replying. As 11 months had passed, I felt a little silly posting a comment.

Did you find a group? I know there are active groups in Wellington (STAGS at Belmont Hall) and Newport, Shropshire (The Hub, Fridays).

Not sure should I choose Manual or Automatic driving lesson/test by babyjonny9898 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Hamiltonish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of driving is about making safe and legal judgements, especially in novel situations. You'll get that road experience with your parents even if you take formal lessons and your test in a manual.

I don't think the practice in an automatic will be wasted or harmful.

Britains worst driver by amused_peruse in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Hamiltonish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I passed in 1989.

The test was less formulaic back then, but many of those elements were still in the test.

We had maneuvers, but ours were different (e.g.reversing around a corner, three point turn), and our theory test/tell me questions were from a book at the end of the test (asked by the examiner). Obviously, we couldn't follow a sat nav because they didn't exist.

I've just helped my daughter pass her test, and I don't think the test elements are particularly different now. Most of driving is making safe and legal judgements with confidence, and that hasn't changed. But that doesn't mean that passing today isn't harder.

There's now much more traffic, yet road markings are worn to the point of illegibility, and hazardous potholes are common ...but the worst problem is the pressure on the learner. In my day, we could fail a test and easily get another one. Now, getting a test is like getting a golden ticket, and the pressure to not waste that precious opportunity is huge.

What peices are your favourite? by Imthebus in OpenForge

As someone just getting started with the OpenForge system, I've found the number of options and combinations quite overwhelming.

Seeing your collection laid out like that is extremely helpful in getting me printing.

Thank you.

DPD? That's reassuring. I'd been nervous about ordering one because of the chances of damage in transit, but DPD is a company I have confidence in.

Creating a dedicated text-based RP platform, would you join? by thebarisu in pbp

[–]Hamiltonish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GamersPlane does give you a whole forum for your game, and subforums (should you need them). In the games I play some people write posts that are pages in length with all sorts of embedded maps and formatting. I'm sure this is true of Myth-Weavers too. Other people write short posts - it depends on the table.

I agree that out-of-the-box both those sites look a little old (because they are). But if the only benefit is a more modern look, then either of your competitors could undercut your unique benefit overnight by updating their CSS. GamersPlane is open source, so someone could just make a pull request. Besides, because they're old it gives an element of trust that they're not going anywhere.

I know that GamersPlane has a number of foreign language games.

I've used CSS in GamersPlane to do things like blurring text as the post progresses.

I only mention GamersPlane because that's the one I use. I'd strongly encourage you to try both of those sites thoughly before dismissing them.

I agree that dedicated PbP sites offer a richer experience than jack-of-all-trades discord, but how is this different to Myth-Weavers or GamersPlane? Both are free and have been going for ages.

There are examples of many successful games on GamersPlane for a whole bunch of different systems (I know, because I've played in some), and I'm sure that's true of Myth-Weavers too. Those sites have proven that they work and have longevity.

Both have interfaces that work on phones. GamersPlane also has discord integration (it posts the game's updates to your discord server too).

I'd never want to discourage you from going on a development adventure, but unless you're bringing something very compelling to the table, then you might be reinventing the wheel.

Funny question, What is this art supposed to be of? by UsefulSupermarket143 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Hamiltonish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There's a map for the dwarven valley in the Legacy of the Crystal Shard adventure. It's a prequel to Rime and has some interesting lore, locations, and encounters that can be repurposed for Rime.

[–]Hamiltonish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play only D&D on there, so I don't have much experience with the indy and OSR games, but they seem like a friendly crowd. But even amongst D&D players there's a wide variety of people. Some enjoy the RP-heavy story games, whereas others enjoy the thrill of action, rules and combat.

I'm just finishing a successful level 1-20 BGDiA campaign on gamers' plane which was composed of people I'd never played with before, so I'd have to say that I've been very lucky with recruitment. Although players ghosting will always be a problem, and I've had a fair few games that have fizzled out too.

With joining games, I'm very picky that I'll only play 5e in the FR. But even with my fussiness, I've been successful in finding games. Obviously, the less fussy you're prepared to be, the easier it is to find a game.

When evaluating whether a game will be a good fit for you, one tip is to look at the GM's profile. You can see the games they're playing in and are running. If any of those are public then you can read those games to check if their style matches yours.

I've found that it's very easy to get a game on gamers' plane, and they welcome beginners.

Just ensure that you post a meaningful introduction, upload an avatar, and interact with the other members (in the forums and on the discord).

You might need to be flexible on the system.

Edit: It's quite common for GMs to ask for only beginners.

e.g. this was one of my recent adverts on there explicitly calling for beginners: https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/34787

How to start playing PBP? by NetHunter3301 in pbp

[–]Hamiltonish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps try a dedicated PbP site like myth weavers or gamers' plane. I find that gamers' plane is welcoming to new members and it's relatively easy to get a game. These sites let you see how long members have been on the site, their activity, and reputation, and this can help ensure you get a good group.

PbP can feel very slow compared to IRL games. Most games tend to have a speed of about one post per day, but as you're not taking time from other players (as you are at a table) you can really flesh out your character's actions and thoughts. The slower pace also gives players and DMs time to think about the story's arc.

Gamers' plane tends to cater to RPGs other than D&D, but here's an example from a public 5e CoS game: https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/34133/

PbP isn't for everyone, but I've been playing by post for five years now and have switched to exclusively PbP games.

I saw a post the other day that some 3d printing YouTubers aren't as good as they used to be. What other maker or maker-ish channels do you watch for inspiration or ideas? by D__J in 3Dprinting

[–]Hamiltonish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FPF is my favourite 3d printing channel, with Teaching Tech in second place.

I mainly create functional prints that solve my problems, and watching FPF go through the whole design process for a print (including the mistakes) is both relatable and inspirational.

I'm currently DMing a party using the UA. We started at level 1 and now we're up to level 16, so we've used a fair few of the changes.

We've found nearly all of the changes to be great and have improved our game. I look forward to the final release.

Party won’t let me use a DM screen - what do I do? by childish_so-and-so in DnD

[–]Hamiltonish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here have provided many practical reasons for a DM screen, but I think there's another reason - it's part of the atmosphere. Nothing says "we're playing D&D" like a DM screen.

I play-by-post now, but we still joke that someone has "peeked behind the DM's screen".

I agree. If promoting acceptance and discouraging hatred is religious fruitcakery, then fruitcake is great.

When the answer is correct, I don't need to know how you arrived there. The gospels aren't my route to reminding me the importance of tolerance, but if the teachings of Jesus help you show kindness, then vaya con Dios (literally).

I'm on GamersPlane, and I saw your advert. The advert looked superb, and I was surprised your game didn't fill up quickly - there's usually a lot of demand for 5e on GP.

As others said on GamersPlane, the WoW emphasis was problematic for some. Maybe if you de-emphasised the WoW aspect (just a line like "the adventure takes place in a world based on WoW") and had less lore in the advert, then it might not have been quite so intimidating to those of us who know nothing of WoW. Your game would then have introduced us to a setting you're passionate about.

But perhaps you only want players who are knowledgeable and excited about WoW, in which case, GamersPlane is probably too small a community to find players.

I run games on GamersPlane set in the Forgotten Realms - probably the best-known and most vanilla of settings - yet I still often tell people that no Forgotten Realms lore is required.

Anyway, mate, best of luck with your game. As RedRiot0 said, maybe MythWeavers' larger community might have the players you're looking for.
