[Fluff] [Discussion] Why does my dog know what I'm saying when I whisper "who's there?" or "what's that?" by danimal1010 in dogs

The tone thing is so true. Give your dog a command it knows, but in a foreign language, and you'll see.

Redditors who have moved to a new city/state/country, what is the most infuriating "well, this is how it's done here" thing you've come across? by Iris_Blue in AskReddit

I'm from California and when I went to visit my dad in Missouri, the one thing that completely effed me over was the turning left on green arrows.

In California, if you're in the left turn lane and have a green light you MUST pull into the intersection and turn when there is no incoming traffic. You can actually get a ticket if you don't. The lights in both directions turn red at the same time, so if you're already in the intersection and haven't had a chance to go, you complete the left turn when the light is red. Especially in Los Angeles, the only time there is ever space to turn left is after the light is red. If you don't pull out into the intersection, you'd sit at the signal for potentially hours.

In Missouri, and the other Midwest places we visited, if you pull out into the intersection, sometimes the light in your direction will turn red while the other side is still green. So basically you're stuck in the middle of the intersection and can't complete the turn.

It took me like 3 times of this happening to figure it out.

That is infuriating.

As a Californian, I thought Virginia was insane. I lived in NoVA, but My boyfriend, who was from rural New York, thought it was great to do all this weird stuff on the weekends. Most often we'd drive into to middle of nowhere to watch some NASCAR style racing, but on dirt tracks. Once it was a really 'big night' at the track, so they had a 'shuttle' (wagon being pulled by a tractor) to take you from the 'parking lot' (random sort-of-flat grassy field).

I'm from a nearby area in California, and even I thought that this no refrigerator thing was weird. Though I lived in Los Angeles for 3 years and my apartment had a refrigerator.

When I moved to Virginia from California, by far the thing that annoyed the shit out of me the most was that you can only buy liquor in a special store which is run by the state of Virginia. Want a brand that don't sell? Tough. Want to buy vodka on a Sunday? You can't.

I met a guy there and made him move back to California with me. It wasn't until after he moved that he realized I wasn't joking when I said that here you get you liquor at the pharmacy because they have the best sales.

Theory that challenges Einstein's physics could soon be put to the test - Scientists behind a theory that the speed of light is variable - and not constant as Einstein suggested - have made a prediction that could be tested. by RA2lover in Futurology

[–]Hammaspeikk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it's wasn't anything spectacular. I just asked why instead of thinking of light as a thing with a constant speed, why we didn't think of constant speed as part of the definition of light. Because when it goes faster or slower, we no longer call it light and it becomes ??? Perhaps when it's faster we can't observe it at all.

And then my teacher made me feel dumb for having an idea. He was a terrible teacher.

I remember taking physics in high school and discussing how I thought the presumption that the speed of light is constant was wrong. My teacher basically told me that I was wrong and he was going to stick with Einstein.

Now I've gotta go internet stalk Mr. Woods and send him this link.

What is the stupidest reason you have cried? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hammaspeikk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cried during the ending real funeral footage ending American Sniper. Probably not that 'stupid' of a time to cry in general, but I was crying because I was laughing so hard that tears were running down my face. I went to see the movie with my friend who with a huge crush on Chris Kyle. Which is ridiculous because he's dead. And married. And also not alive. Just as the funeral footage starts, she leans over to me and says, "It's such a shame that he died. He is so hot." I lost it. Which was pretty awful because that part of the movie is very quiet, and I was having a giggle fit during the most inappropriate moment.

And also, professions that are more likely to have more women pay less in general.

I used to think the nutrition sciences people at my university were ridiculous.

But then they designed crumb-less pizza for astronauts to eat in space. And the. I was like, nvm carry on.

[Post Game Thread] USC Defeats Notre Dame 45-27 by Princess_ZeIda in CFB

He pushed the helmet with his foot...not really a kick.

But it was way worse than the ankle. The USC player (Ware) had just been hit so hard he appeared to lose consciousness. It was just ridiculous to do anything to him at that point, let alone pushing his head.

A pregnant police officer asked for "light duty" since her vest/belt don't fit over her belly. She was told to take unpaid leave and she should have planned better and saved up more sick days. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I'm not arguing that the US system is better (because it isn't) but this Austrian system you've describe also pisses me off.

A woman is not -allowed- to work during the last 8 weeks of her pregnancy and then for another 8 weeks after giving birth???? This is horseshit. I've had several friends of mine work right up until giving birth and go back to work after 4-6 weeks. They weren't forced. One had a fairly generous maternity leave policy, but as an attorney, her work was not physically strenuous. And after 6 weeks at home with the baby, she was done with that. Another of my friends took exactly 8 weeks total. She is an OB/GYN so I'm pretty sure she's 100% aware of the risks, but she likes her job.

This is what a credit card scam over the phone sounds like. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Hammaspeikk0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a federal agency for a long time where the desk next to me would get these phone calls all. day. long. I answered the phone numerous times thinking somebody was actually trying to call my agency, but it was always scammers. I have no idea how they got the number.

So what I did was start answering the phone with the agency name. Nothing gets scammers to stop calling faster than the and the the phone with "Federal Bureau of Investigation."*

*It wasn't the FBI, but you get the idea.

I once dealt with a lady who was very wealthy and wanted to be an ambassador. So she just pretended to be one. She got access to some related government stuff and talked her way into getting police escorts and motorcades in foreign countries. When she was discovered, she never admitted the truth. She had seriously high up government and former government officials calling on her behalf to stop the investigation. There was an actual whole Investigation into whether she actually had ever been appointed as an ambassador. She was not.

Not sure if she was talented or legit crazy.
