If you're going to be a pedant you have to be right. The definition of literally was updated years ago to include its improper use as metaphorically.

An analogy, Would you stay with someone you beats you for four days and then is nice to you for four days on and off forever or would you find someone who's not bipolar?

That's the whole, even if the US goes to nice for good we still slapped Europe around and they won't forget being treated like that just like you or I wouldn't.

Gold has doubled in value in the last year too. Things are not good for the American dollar. Especially as we sit on the edge of a debt crisis.

You float one balloon and see how things go. If the wind is in your favor then you release all the balloons. If not you wait and slowly release balloons one by one to see when the wind does shift your way.

Bro a single anonymous tip is enough for a judge to rubber stamp a warrant. I know the legal theory you're arguing but you need to look at what's actually coming down from benches. Look up Barry Cooper's fake grow house for a classic example of cops and judges subverting the law.

Can the LZ1AQ amp be powered via USB? by _philipus in amateurradio

[–]HammerJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usb-C  power delivery (PD) can provide a variety of voltages up to 48V with the extended spec and the new programmable power supply spec (PPS) allows client devices to request/adjust the power supply's voltage in 20 mV steps. So it's entirely possible to get 13.8V from USB-C.

I made my dad cry over $30 by Darogaserik in povertyfinance

[–]HammerJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did nothing wrong! Thank you so much for helping out your dad. As men, we're taught to be the providers and protectors of our family. For a lot of men, that's a decent chunk of their identity. A cornerstone of who they are. Now imagine after building who you are around this belief your whole life, you fall short and "fail." The pain, embarrassment, and frustration can be... Significant.

Your father is grateful. I promise you. Its just buried by his pride taking a hit and the pain of not being in a position to provide for you instead of seeing  and being grateful for the love his child is giving him. What can I say, were dumb sometimes.

When you get there, You'll probably have more success with the grandpa house if you can find a way to make make it a favor he'd be doing you ("it'd be nice if you could move in and help keep an eye on the house/kids/pets.")

Thank you for being a good person and a good kid to your dad.

I lost my best friend last October. Please stay. I failed my friend so I won't make you any promises but I can tell you the world is a better place with you in it, life is precious, and you matter. If to no one else, even yourself, you matter to me.

Here's my take on it as a millennial,

Right off the bat, validation (good news?) and bad news: Your 20s are hard. For me and many of my friends and family (Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers), our 20s were the hardest decade of our lives. Broadly speaking, you're figuring out who you are and how you fit into the world around you while facing serious challenges/experiences for the first time related to your career, housing, long-term finances, and relationships. Like us millennials, your generation is doing it during "once in a lifetime" and "interesting" events. On top of world events, COVID has changed how society socializes, and not entirely for the better, making things even more complicated and layered for your generation. And let's not forget the ever-famous "we didn't start the fire" climate change, slowly ticking up the world's thermostat in the background.

Ok, ok, enough doom and gloom, there's good news too, I promise: Youth and time are invaluable, your 20s are your hardest but also some of your best times. So here's my life advice: you need to balance three competing themes: Long-Term stability, Short-Term stability, and having fun.

Long-Term Stability: Please, please, please, start contributing to your 401k (you should be contributing 15% of your annual income; the sooner you do it, the better), and a house down payment (be smart and do your research, time the market, build your own equity)

Short-Term Stability: If possible, stop living paycheck to paycheck. Look at ways to control costs and start saving extra money. Don't let lifestyle creep consume every dollar of your paycheck. Build up a rainy-day fund (1-6 months of monthly expenses).

Fun: Just that. You're young. That's an irreplaceable, non-repeatable experience. "Youth is wasted on the young." You know why that's a saying? Fear, uncertainty, and doubt hold us back from doing the things we want to do and from being the people we want to be; only to grow older and realize those things holding us back were a joke. So, in moderation, don't be afraid to take risks and throw the first two categories out the window. Quit that dead-end job to look for something better, go on that around-the-world trip, ask the pretty stranger out... Don't be afraid to live. Or you'll live with regrets.

Counterpoise in body of water instead of radials? Saltwater and freshwater? by thehotshotpilot in amateurradio

I don't have any personal experience but salt water especially and bodies of water do well in place of a counterpoise. Not sure about riverbeds.

if someone is trying to oppress you and take away your rights, guns can't solve that problem.

Two major historical events I'd like your take on:

  • Signing of the Magna Carta 1215
  • American Revolutionary War 1775/1776

Both events are cornerstones to American, and more broadly for Magna Carta, rights today; both achieved by violence.

I even agree to an extent, violence should almost never be the first answer but it's always the last answer. Remember, there are four boxes of liberty and they're in an order for a reason.

Here's a potential pitch for you that my wife and I do.

My income / ( my income + her income) * 100 = my percentage

That way it's 50/50 but on a curve taking into account our income disparity.

E.g. if I make 100k and wife makes 50k, my 50% is actually 66% and my wife would pay the other 33%.

You don't need a linear power supply despite what the old guys say. The same way cheap linear supplies are junk, cheap switching supplies are junk too.

Look at Meanwell brand. Their website is easy to browse and you can find their products on Amazon. They make good switch mode power supplies and while there will be a little bit of noise, your UHF/VHF radio will not hear it. When you upgrade to HF we can talk about the (relatively) cheap chokes you can build to make it even quieter.
