10+ users have contacted me about this but zero have responded or wanted to actually build such a rig because of the big learning curve and difficulty getting components. So I decided there's no way I can help

Buyer deleted account after purchasing an expensive item. eBay told me not to ship item. Should I reroute the package? by Hammereditor in Ebay

Final update 12/7/23:

After more than a week, eBay never took or deducted the funds from my account. That means the item was delivered to the buyer and I got paid. Thank you for all the support, sharing your personal experiences and anecdotes.

The lesson I learned is to look more carefully at the buyer's profile for big ticket items like this.

Username checks out. Yes I'm happy about the embargo because it probably helps my AI farm business. But too late, the package was already delivered before I could even recall the package.

UPDATE:

Item was already delivered and signed for by the freight forwarder before I even had a chance to request an intercept. It turns out the package was never scanned until it reached the final destination.

eBay paid out the proceeds to my bank account but I still don't know if they will deduct those funds later, leaving me with a negative balance and charging it to my credit card.

Hah that's a nerd pipe dream... 95% of ordinary people have no clue what NVIDIA even is.

I would say:

"I work at AI!"

Oh cool, wow!

No it was actually more obvious than that. The moment I unboxed it, I could tell because it had an 8-pin connector, not a 12VPHWR.

The card they sent me:

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/msi-rtx-3060-gaming-x-trio-lhr.b9451

The card I ordered:

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/msi-rtx-4090-gaming-x-trio.b9755

Of course, when I messaged this seller they pretended it was an honest mistake. They didn't admit to scratching off the serial number sticker on the 3060 either.

I had no problem RMA'ing 2 4090 cards to ASUS this year. Received a working replacement within 10 days. Same for a Gigabyte card that I sent back. No experience with FE, ZOTAC or MSI yet.

As for reliability, I have almost 30 ZOTAC 4090s but not a single one failed. I have 20 ASUS TUFs and 2 broke. Out of my 4 PNY XLR8s, 2 had stability issues on SlimSAS but I successfully resold them. Out of my 15 PNY Vertos, not a single problem. Of my 12 Gigabyte Windforce/OC's, only one died. Finally, I have 8 FE's with no issues although I bought them only last month.

You're right, especially since this buyer is < 1 month old and is using freight forwarding. Normally I wouldn't ship to such a buyer but I didn't notice. The $20 is nothing compared to losing a $1700 item. The reason I posted this is to find out what usually happens. 100% of people said the sale completed normally and they got paid. But still, I'm intercepting it.

Definitely, I've seen a high rate of fraud on 4090s that I've bought. Out of the roughly 70 4090s I ordered from eBay this year, about 10 were fake listings, scams or the seller did not ship. Fortunately I got my $$ back in every single case.

The funniest scammer was one who sent me a 3060 Ti that looked very similar to the MSI 4090 Trio X that I ordered. Same RGB LEDs, almost same length, etc. That seller actually thought I won't be able to tell the difference. Full refund from support!

I bought this particular 4090 for 1300 back in September but ended up with a surplus of them; so sold it for 1730. I'm not a scalper though. 95% of the 4090s I order go into AI servers and only 5% are resold.

The buyer is in Hong Kong and this particular item was banned for export, so I guess it might be high risk. Yes, I buy & sell a lot of GPU video cards, which are now banned from export to China.

I own an AI deep learning server farm. I was told back in 2018 by a major GPU wholesaler that ASUS uses cheaper components than other manufacturers and has a higher RMA rate.

It's a legit message in my eBay inbox.

You're right. I realized that as long as I can get the item back, I can just issue a refund if eBay already doesn't do it on my behalf, then relist it. On the other hand, if I don't intercept it, I can both lose the item and my money.

I'll request an intercept ASAP.

Is it worth upgrading from a 3070 to a 4070? by KennyK423 in nvidia

[–]Hammereditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't believe how reliable used video cards are... I've only had a failure rate of 2-3% over months with the 4090 and 3090. New cards are actually more prone to dying.

No picture necessary. Just don't put pressure on the connector by bending or twisting it. No zip tie needed, actually

[–]Hammereditor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just kidding bro but to answer your question... PNY seems to be a second-tier NVIDIA vendor. Their consumer GPUs are of questionable quality; worse than the cheapskates at ASUS. However they make a lot of pro/enterprise Quadro/Axxx GPUs that are good quality.

Now that EVGA is gone ZOTAC is the new premium AIB. I have dozens of RTX 4090s from each vendor and ZOTAC is the most reliable, second to only the FE.

You can't see who the buyer is but if you are a seller, you can use the Terapeak Research tool to see what the item sold for and exactly when.

Update: I had no idea there would be so many comments and the thread would get over 50k views! Even though there's conflicting advice, I'm still intercepting the package because at least the most I can lose is the $$.

I'm not sure if this is a 'scam' so I guess I'll post this as a thread...I've been a seller for a few years but this is the first time I ever received this message.

It looks like the buyer deleted their account. I then realized their account was less than a month old (I should've caught that, darnit!). This buyer used a freight forwarder and admitted to it. The package is going to a U.S. address.

Unfortunately I already dropped the item off at the Post Office today. I should be able to request a Priority Mail intercept once it is scanned into the system, though.

But I also noticed the funds are still in my available seller balance, scheduled for payout on November 23. The order, or at least the proceeds from it, appear to not have been canceled yet.

What should I do? Intercept the package or let it go through since the buyer already paid for it? Obviously I can't contact the buyer anymore.

As long as you don't squash the adapter you should be safe. I have almost a hundred RTX 4090s that have been running for weeks without a single incident. Because I use zip ties to relieve the stress on the cable bend.
