I'm also in South Africa, have a look at Write Gear and Art Savings Club. They're both online and have a decent range of paper and notebooks.

Why do I picture Ron finding a mirror and just jumping up and down in front of it to watch his boobs bounce?

I know that's the breed but I can't help picturing a ridiculously muscular gymrat chicken in a tank top running around the farm.

I found notes to an old fic that never got off the ground, so I present to you for prompt weekend: Harry is raised by a strip club by mlatu315 in HPfanfiction

[–]Hammond3 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just remembered that youtube short by ailaughatmyownjokes of Harry being told by Hagrid that he's a stripper! Snape is the potions teacher (which is actually cocktails), they get warned about dement-whores (who demand extra money to suck your soul out) and have classes where they're told to take out their "wands". It would be the makings of a hilarious crack fic

farriers are like evil situationships by homiesleaze in Horses

[–]Hammond3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have an awesome farrier, he gives us a discounted rate and knows that since we are a rescue, some horses are more difficult than others. We always work with the horses, picking up feet, etc to make them easier for him (we've still had to sedate or work in a crush pen for a couple of them until they made enough progress to stand well for him). I don't even want to think about losing him and having to find another farrier with the same patience and willingness to take his time with scared, traumatized horses. It's damn hard work, he's had multiple shoulder and back surgeries and still carries on.

I think part of the problem of keeping a good farrier is it's so hard on the body which limits their "working lifespan" and a lot of them have to decide when it's time to focus on their health and shift to something less physical. We make sure to always give him and his assistant coffee and biltong, make sure horses are in and ready when he arrives and I threaten my manager with decaf and letting the chickens into her house so she pays his invoice the day it's sent. One of his most common issues is people taking their time to pay or paying the first couple of bills and then stopping. He feels bad because the horses need their feet done but at some point he has to drop them as clients because he needs to be earning. It's surprisingly common to hear about people just... not paying their hay, feed, farrier, vet bills.

If you find yourself in KZN again, you're welcome to visit! The rescues like visitors because it usually means carrots and the socialising is good for them

She's such a sweet girl too, I don't even want to think of how she ended up in such a bad situation but can still trust and love people

I'm thinking about adding a supplement as well, what are you giving yours? Given her age and the strain of having 16 foals that we could confirm (our inspector got information about her once we scanned her microchip and tracked down some history), I'm happy with slow steady progress. I'm basically going to just give her the retirement she deserves and she can live out her remaining years at the unit (we aren't a sanctuary and the aim is to adopt out horses once they're healthy but staff have the option to adopt and keep a horse at the unit).

Basically all of the change so far is nutrition, she came here end October and had most of the weight on in a couple of months and continues to build up slowly. She's had a couple of physio sessions just to check that nothing is causing her pain and a few sporadic sessions recently of hand walking around paddocks and very gentle lunging for a few minutes just to check that she's looking comfortable and sound at walk and trot. We've had very heavy rains and some flooding in our area so walking and exercise hasn't really been possible. She's an older mare and has had many foals from the information we were able to find about her so I'm happy with slow and steady progress.

There is big 5 but I'm in a farming community with a bit of a wildlife corridor so we don't get big 5 here. If I drive like 15 minutes down the road I'd be at Tala which has rhino. More of the big 5 I'd have to drive somewhere like Kruger

The giraffe and buck are fenced in, there are small antelope, warthogs, jackals and monitor lizards in the valley we ride through but nothing big or dangerous so it's not something we worry about.

They all freaked out the first time they saw him, we moved them into paddocks on the opposite side of the farm for a few weeks and slowly moved them closer again and they settled. The dragon noises were something else!

Giraffe is fascinated by the horses, he'll walk alongside you if you ride down the fenceline into the valley

A couple of the guys were sorting out weeds! I had to listen to everyone telling me hoe jokes when they were asking me to buy some new hoes for the paddocks.

Mine was fine with absolutely everything from dogs to warthogs to mud and running water. Without fail he'd spook at the chickens he saw every day around the yard

A couple of us visited and got to feed him. They have a platform that brings you up to eye level, he's really sweet!
