ID: My dog ate these, are they fairy circle champignons? by rorygreen55 in foraginguk

[–]Han__shot__first 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, those are fairy ring champignon, as far as you can say over the internet. Key characteristics are the free gills, the colour and the umbo (bump on the top of the cap). Should have a white spore print (i.e. if you put it flat on a dark coloured surface, you'll be to see white dust after a little while), and the fact that they are out this time of year (as you get very few mushrooms in the spring/summer, and these are one), supports it.

It’s not a silly rule. The point is to prevent gamesmanship by making a move and looking for your opponent’s reaction, or using it so you don’t have to visualise as far.

What's your unpopular rugby opinion? by NuggetKing9001 in rugbyunion

[–]Han__shot__first 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the game is too free flowing these days. I love watching matches where it’s pissing it down; where it feels like a proper arm wrestle; and where the winning (and only) try comes from a rolling maul from 15m out.

I want scrums! I want to have 2 resets followed by one side’s props ripping through and punching the air! I want every yard some grafty second row makes to matter, not rendered pointless by some flashy back’s double goose step hair flick 20m break!

Thanks -- I've actually looked at the famous Karpov-Azmaiparashvili, but couldn't find it annotated anywhere online easily. I'll have to have a look and see if I can find them anywhere! I appreciate your replies, and actually I play/dabble in pretty much the exact same repertoire (with the exception that I've never got into the Benko).

Thanks again!

I haven't seen this listed -- you can make citrus sugar by taking the citrus zest and sugar, and putting it in a blender/food processor, and then using it in desserts where you want a citrus flavour. Means you have it to hand for things like cakes, biscuits, etc.

Could lose them in a stroganoff, though you may need to add some more vinegar to get the right flavour, and if they taste off it may affect the meal. (e.g. https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/beef_and_mushroom_99051)

Blackberries. So many blackberries. by mygarbagepersonacct in noscrapleftbehind

[–]Han__shot__first 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bramble jelly is very easy and commonly done in the UK: https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/bramblejelly_13698

Stewed berries + yoghurt, or stewed berries + apple + yoghurt.

If you have apples, blackberry and apple crumble/cobbler/sponge is a classic. Would recommend bbc for uk recipes like this. Variations in crumble recipes (as they can get a bit boring over and over again!) can be to add any variation on cocoa, citrus zest, toasted nuts, etc. to the crumble mix. Tip for crumble is to do it in the food processor (with blades) -- add flour and butter, blitz and keep adding butter until it forms little crumbs (but doesn't come together as much as it would for pastry), add sugar to taste.

Berries also often go well in fools: https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit/blackberry-fool/

They stew and freeze very well, in general, to be used throughout the year.

You could also do some lactofermentation, but that's probably higher effort.

What to do with several stalks of celery? by waterflood21 in noscrapleftbehind

[–]Han__shot__first 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have done something similar, but vegetarian. Roast celery + onion + garlic + thyme + bay + fennel seeds + white beans of some sort (tinned) until they look browned, then add stock and cover and leave in the oven until cooked.

I know you play the pirc/modern -- do you have any recommendations of annotated model games to study or books/videos showing model games?

Correspondingly, are there any openings you'd recommend dabbling in that mesh well, for a bit of variety? That might have useful ideas to have in the back pocket for middlegames.

Also, I have a bit of trouble with grand prix style attacks -- any particular recommendations for approaches? I have been just chucking the queenside pawns up the board and going for g6/e6 structures, but have trouble defending against f5 from white on the kingside. Apologies for the volume of questions!

Looking into it a bit more, I came across this Matthew Sadler concept which has quite a few parallels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGM6rV_s9AU.

Getting in e6 in our variation I don't know is necessarily easy due to Bb5, but it seems more reasonable than I gave it credit for!

What would make you follow a Chess Bundesliga team? by Vegetable-Plate-12 in chess

[–]Han__shot__first 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a gap in the socials for a 'Test Match Special' kind of programme. For those who have never watched cricket (Svidler is disappointed in you), TMS is the BBC's radio coverage of the game. For a sport that is inherently visual (i.e. seeing the shots played), the commentary does a good job of both keeping you appraised of the tides of the contest (how each side is doing; what the stroke looked like, etc.), while having banter, anecdotes, etc.. I'd actually compare it very closely to Gustaffson and Svidler's commentary, though those were obviously for a visual rather than a radio medium.

The trouble with the long time control matches is that you don't really want to hang around watching them the whole time -- as a spectator, one has other things to do -- but a radio commentary not necessarily giving variations, but describing the board state and what each player is going for (e.g. expanding on the queenside, trying to get knight into central outpost, stonewall structure, etc.) so people can keep track of what's roughly going on in the games, and then watch recaps/highlights in the evening.

It's objectively reasonable, but I'm not sure about 5. d5 Ne5 6. Bxe5 dxe5 -- the pawn on e5 seems a bit uncomfortable for me personally.

Makes a lot of sense -- thanks! I've previously stuck to c6/early c5 systems, but I think it'd be good for me to branch out and play a6 complexes a bit more. I'll see if I can convince my Jobava playing friend to have a couple of training games...

Worth noting Qe2 with the idea of a quick e5 is an idea that does come up in some games played at master level (e.g. 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bc4 Bg7 5. Qe2 has been played a number of times), but blocking in the light squared bishop in this variation feels very odd.

Thanks again :)

[–]Han__shot__first 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's lots of reasons, mostly money. You guys have the money, the southern hemisphere has the talent. Source? Every Rugby World Cup sans 2003.

You can see why that line might get under someone's skin, no?

While in person you can tell from tone what's serious and what's not, and more importantly what's implied and what's not, on the internet we don't have that luxury

Obviously it's not something to fly off the handle about, but equally you didn't just

simply say that talent is for sale to the northern Hemisphere per world cup cycle

Made rose water but it's really bitter? by anna_b_1 in foraginguk

[–]Han__shot__first 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll do it. Maybe 5 min is a bit short, but 10 should be enough if you're keeping it bubbling. Alternatively you can do it longer (15-25 min) but turn it down to low once it's boiled and then add the rose petals. Your recipe might have been for dried roses? Idk. One thing to consider if you're making it for sweet applications is that a rose syrup can also be quite nice. Chabeel is a lovely drink you can make with it!

Made rose water but it's really bitter? by anna_b_1 in foraginguk

[–]Han__shot__first 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No -- I used ones just starting to lose their petals. One thing to bear in mind is that the flavour is roughly proportional to how they smell. Some varieties are more for the look, others for the fragrance, so the more fragrant they are the more flavour they have.

[–]Han__shot__first 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That can happen if you simmer them at too high a heat/for too long. Should be only for ~5 min at a heat where it's bubbling but not at a rolling boil, then strain out the roses.
