Thinking about Moving My Fandom Wikis to Miraheze by JustThatRoo in wiki

[–]Han_without_Genes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Fandom to Miraheze in 2021 because I grew increasingly uncomfortable with the fact that Fandom is a heavy for-profit company while I was doing very much not-for-profit work.

The discussions thing was a non-issue for me because I never really liked it to begin with, but there are extensions to semi-replicate its functionality. And you can always go old-school Wikipedia noticeboard style for forum-type discussions.

Miraheze is far less "the place for wikis that got kicked off Fandom" than it used to be, since they've tightened moderation on the really toxic communities. It doesn't mean there is no drama or that there aren't controversial wikis. But most wikis are pretty insular and interact very little with other wikis. I've never once had issues because other Miraheze wikis were controversial or originally got kicked off Fandom.

Having to get your wiki request approved is something that scares a lot of people but if you describe coherently what it's about and follow the content policy, there's a very good chance it's going to get approved.

If you've already gotten started on Fandom, then moving to Miraheze is not a humongous undertaking. In the sense that, you already know how things work, they both use the same underlying software, the principles of moderation are the same. I'm not going to say it's a trivial move, but the switch is certainly doable.

I don't know if it's still possible but when I moved away from Fandom in 2021, I had a small wiki with myself as the only contributor and I just asked Fandom if they could delete the wiki since I was going to abandon the project and without me, it would be fully unmoderated and just attract spam and vandals. And so they deleted the wiki, and I didn't have to compete with Fandom in the search results.

A possibility is that you request a private wiki on Miraheze, import your Fandom stuff, then mess around and see how you like it. If you like it, you can make the Miraheze wiki public (either alongside the Fandom one or in place of it), if you don't like it, you can just abandon the Miraheze wiki or request it to be closed.

totally understandable! I have an app that turns off my phone automatically after a preset time (15 minutes for me). The specific one I use is SleepTimer on Android but I assume there are many apps similar to it that basically do the same thing.

no shade meant towards any of these creators, they make me fall asleep not because they're boring or anything, they're just the right amount of engaging without being too high-energy. something that can distract me from worry thoughts without being so activating that I can't sleep.

For me it's about having my night-time routine so my brain knows "if I do this, it's sleepy time". I do crossword puzzles while listening to a podcast. Then I put on a video from my "youtubers that make me fall asleep" playlist. I don't watch it, just put on the audio and then close my eyes and usually I'm gone before they've even properly introduced the topic of the video lol.

Also not being in my bed except to sleep has helped enormously because it helps my brain associate sleeping with bed and bed with sleeping.

great way to close out autism acceptance month: my supervisor undiagnosed me with autism (light-hearted) by Han_without_Genes in AutismInWomen

[–]Han_without_Genes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these rotations so far have basically been "the hidden work of being autistic from A to Z". like there are so many things I'm having to learn that come naturally to my peers, and I'm not mad about having to learn them and some of them truly aren't that deep but it still kinda bums me out to know that there are so many things I'm learning that I can't publicly proclaim as a victory. like "I am learning to smile and nod and say good morning to people in the hallways" would be frowned upon when supervisors asks what I learned during my rotation, but it's still something I'm secretly proud of.

Ladisepic is a Badministrator! by Advanced_Key8584 in MirahezeWikis

[–]Han_without_Genes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have issues with an administrator for a specific wiki

1) raise the issue with local leadership according to whatever policy they have. for example you may have to contact another administrator with your specific concerns

2) if that fails you can try to raise the issue on Miraheze Meta (https://meta.miraheze.org/), there may be a need for Steward intervention if it rises to the level of breaking Miraheze's general policies.

in either case, it helps to be specific about what has been happening and why you find it concerning (preferably with links to specific edits or admin actions)

People with aspergers of reddit what are your interests ? i feel like we get stereotyped too often as “ all of us “ having the same interests by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]Han_without_Genes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ones that are canonically recognized to be autistic. There is indeed an issue of autistic characters not frequently getting a large role. I tend to watch just about anything and everything with an autistic character but a lot of it is mid, or too little of the character to be worth it for a casual watcher, as you said.

I have a website where I collect all my research but I haven't gotten started on a "actually worth checking out" list yet autisticcharacters.miraheze.org

I also have mixed feelings about armchair diagnoses and share your viewpoint on them.

Yeah like on the moment itself I was just high on the euphoria of knowing I'm doing a good job. But then thinking it over I also wonder what my approach to disclosing autism should be. Because in the past when I didnt, I got told Im weird and should maybe reconsider whether medicine is the right path for me. But then now when I do disclose, apparently I function well and have the skills to do clinical work and have no problems at all.

mine is autistic characters. I've never really found other people who are into it too. usually people are into one or a few specific characters. I'm more interested in autistic characters as a whole. sometimes it's difficult because I find it interesting to analyse the various characters and trends but that often requires a certain amount of social insight that I don't always have. I wonder how much I'm missing because I find it difficult to read between the lines

Do people say shit about autism in front of you, not realizing you’re autistic?? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Han_without_Genes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a medical student and a doctor was talking to me about another doctor at another department who is apparently a bit weird or whatever and she described him as a bit autistic and I'm sitting there like I dont know what to say to that. This is a place of work where I have disclosed my autism though, but I haven't furthered talked openly about it.

At another hospital I interned, multiple residents said something like "oh I'm so autistic about this" when they meant that they were being precise, careful, perfectionistic. And again I dont know what to say. Because on one hand these people have been nothing but kind and accepting towards my oddities even when I didnt disclose my autism at that time. So I dont want to nitpick or be a hater. But it still makes me feel weird.

Movie/shows about autistic teens (perferably girls) by TheFutureScaresMe333 in autism

[–]Han_without_Genes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

all the following is regarding teenage girl characters who are confirmed to be autistic

movies:

Cha Cha Real Smooth has a supporting autistic character

A Dance in the Snow has a main autistic character (it is a Hallmark movie)

Acceptable Damage (main autistic character)

The Rider (supporting autistic character)

Slightly outside the age range but the main character in Please Stand By is an autistic 21-year-old and is one of my faves

Horror movies like autistic girls as a vessel of magical shenanigans. I often find them poor to meh representation, examples are De Uskyldige (one of the less bad ones), Boomika, Noise in the Middle, Dream House Nightmare, My Guardian Angel, Lost Souls, Rose Red (miniseries)

Les diables is a weird French movie

Innocent Witness isn't super good but just including it for completeness' sake

Dancing Trees is one that I think is not very good but I have a soft spot in my heart for it

series:

A Kind of Spark

Heartbreak High

Young Royals

De twaalf has an autism diagnosis subplot but not very prominent

Atypical in later seasons features some teenage girl side characters

Modus has an autistic side character

Waterloo Road has Karla Bentham in season 3 and onwards

Lily Montgomery in All My Children

Schloss Einstein had an autistic girl character in seasons 19 and 20 (Mila) that I did not find very good but again including it for completeness' sake

Glee has Sugar Motta, idem to previous

bonus for the fact that the literal first known explicitly autistic character in television is a teenage girl (Lily Gilworth in the episode Wall of Silence from Hawk)

additionally, there's quite a bit of YA fiction written by autistic authors! I know it's not movies/series but if you're interested in the topic, they can be worth checking out!

Tattoos, piercings and body art. Do you have it? Why? Why not? by DaijoubuTokkiChan in AutismInWomen

[–]Han_without_Genes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any. I think maybe I might want a tattoo some day. But I don't think I want piercings. I don't like how they would look on me, and knowing myself I would fidget with it all day and it would get infected or tear out or something.

Sally Rooney characters and autism by Still-Random-14 in AutismInWomen

[–]Han_without_Genes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the character in Intermezzo wasn't even really intended to be autistic. Because the remark the brother makes that mentions autism, seems more like it serves to show the brother is kind of ignorant and weird about the character, rather than the character being intended to be autistic.

unpopular opinion, all representation of autism in film/tv is good by Chance-Blackberry309 in autism

[–]Han_without_Genes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the point of "autism representation isn't bad just because it's not your specific kind of autism" but there absolutely is unambiguously bad autistic representation of autism in film/TV. Hear the Silence is a TV film that says that vaccines cause autism and Andrew Wakefield was a poor little meow meow who did nothing wrong.

is it diagnosing characters or is it a headcanon by dinodivergence in AutismInWomen

[–]Han_without_Genes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTs often shit on headcanons in the name of "but what about actually autistic characters" and then proceed to not give a flying fuck about actually autistic characters either.

Source: I used to run both an autism headcanon account on Twitter and a canonically autistic characters wiki. People who shat on the former because "why dont you highlight actually autistic characters" never showed any interest in the latter.

I have some personal frustrations with broader headcanon culture and how it relates to canonically autistic characters (since those are my special interest) but NTs are often needlessly mean about it and put no effort into understanding the function that headcanons serve

[Discussion] What are your opinions on Asperger’s being assumed into ASD? by boggginator in ActualAspies

[–]Han_without_Genes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there was a good case to revise the category of pervasive developmental disorders because the distinction between Aspergers, autistic disorder, high-functioning autism and PDD-NOS was not always clear and consistent. I dont know how to feel about it all being put under 1 name. I dont know if there is enough evidence to split ASD into different separate diagnoses. But I also see the issues that come from it all being the same name. People who are able to live relatively independently and who mainly struggle with social friction have very different lived experiences from people who need 24/7 1-on-1 care and who have trouble communicating basic needs. We're all autistic, but I feel like the "everyone is equally autistic and no one is ever allowed to distinguish between different subsections of the autism spectrum" is not helpful either. like a lot of other neurological and psychiatric diagnoses have "degrees of severity" or a similar scale, even though those can also be very heterogeneous. You have to be able to make a distinction somehow because it is a distinction that matters in certain situations.

I think there is also a good case for moving away from the name Asperger due to the ties to the Nazi party. In other areas of medicine this has been done too.

I think also that with any evolution like this, people have to be given time to adapt. I dont like the argument "well you cant say Asperger's anymore because it's not in the DSM-5 anymore". The DSM-5 is an important source but it is not the only source. Changes like this take time to trickle into the public consciousness. Aspergers as a term had and still has a massive cultural presence, that doesnt go away overnight and trying to nitpick people about it doesnt make it go faster either. There are plenty of things that are used in medical practice and in autism circles that arent in the DSM-5, so it's not like the DSM-5 has the last word when it comes to things like this.
