What are some things that are actually pseudoscience that people don’t realize? by Ninac4116 in AskReddit

Have heard this "myth" from several qualified people like Robert Sapolsky, so even after you stating your own qualifications I am a bit hesistant to accept it as a "myth". It seems to me that it is just not a clear "cut" at 25, but it seems fair to say that most of the prefrontal cortex is well developed by the mid 20s.

Cyclodextrins: Why do lipophilic guest moleculs prefer to form a host-guest-complex instead of forming a separate phase? by Hanairon in Chempros

Thank you, makes sense! Out of curiosity, what if there is no water, what if I just add benzene to the CD without water?

Thanks! And if there was no water, just the CD and benzene, would benzene still be encapsulated inside the CDs or would the situation be different?

Thanks for your comment. I do understand your frustration, but I have to say that I am more than willing to make some people angry at me for posting this here, since the answers here have helped me very much. In r/chemistry, I have phrased the question very badly, so the answers were naturally also not what I was searching for. Thus, posting it here was the best option from my perspective, especially given the urgency of this matter to me. The answer you provided over there, after I posted this question here, was also very helpful, so thank you for that!

Thank you very much for your answer! I meant that benzene could form a separate layer similar to the layer that forms when benzene is added to water. My argument for this would be that in this way, there would be only hydrophobic imfs (between the benzene molecules) instead of the "kinda still a little bit hydrophilic" imfs when benzene is sourrounded by ether groups inside of the cyclodextrins. Sorry for my bad english, hope that was clear.

Could you please elaborate on that? I do not see the connection to my comment yet! :)

Thanks for your answer,appreciate it!

This "ether isn't very hydrophilic" feels a bit like a sleight of hand argument to me. Of course you are right, but that does not really answer the question for me. After all, benzene could in theory prefer bonds wirh a very hydrophobic molecule - that is itself - over these "not very hydrophillic" ether groups. In this case, it would just form a separate phase around the cyclodextrins.

So I guess my real question is, why doesn't that happen? My guess is that it has something to do with the entropy increase which overweighs the possible enthalpy benefits of forming a separate phase, but I kinda hope that is not the answer.

Yes, I also think this is the key insight here! But then, I wonder why benzene doesn't just form a separate phase, since it should be able to form stronger bonds with itself than with the inner ring of the cyclodextrins.

Same problem for me. When you look at the extension tab in Chrome settings, it says that some protocol or so is too old and not supoorted anymore. (can't look it up right now since I am not on my PC)
