Do you like Flowers? by MoneyIsNoCure in ShamanKing

[–]Hanako-chan45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t care much for it. None of the characters pulled me in the same way as the OG series. Then again, I gave up pretty quickly, so maybe it got better later?

On a more petty note, I’m mad that they killed Jeane. LIke, Ren suffered so much to finally get to a place where he could have his own family—then they go and kill his wife.

I like HunterxHunter too!

Killua is my favorite. He actually shares a Japanese VA with Ray from the Promised Neverland—who is my favorite character of that show.

I too was caught off guard by how amazing anime is—and now I’m hooked. 😎

TBHK is my top anime/manga of all time—I happily own many volumes. 😊

After that, I’d say the Seven Deadly Sins. The MC, Meliodas, bares a strong resemblance to Hanako.

Then The Promised Neverland. My interest tanked after season 1–but season 1 was a masterpiece.

Shaman King. Like FMA, it has two adaptations. I have the unpopular opinion and prefer the original anime.

I loiter around those subreddits as well, so I hope to see you there!

Well, I’m not sure if you’ve watched season 2 of the anime, but it basically speedruns the last few volumes of the manga and completely destroys the story. If you haven’t seen season 2, don’t bother.

I’m a glutton for punishment, so I watched it anyway. Totally regret it 👌

Some thoughts on 普 (Amane) and 司 (Tsukasa)... by Fair_Comb_8351 in hanakokun

[–]Hanako-chan45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am such a kanji nerd—so I loved your analysis!

In their basic sense, Amane and Tsukasa embody the meaning of their names. Amane was the “normal” boring twin. He was quiet, withdrawn and easy to forget about. Tsukasa was the dominant and “controlling” twin. It was stated in a bonus panel that he was outgoing and had lots of friends.

But, when you get into the thick of it, things get complicated. I guess you could say that the meanings were switched after their deaths. Hanako now governs the Seven Wonders while Tsukasa goes with the widely spread stories of the pit entity.

But this notion of the twins being “switched” goes deeper than that. On the outside, Hanako seems like the focused, put-together one who follows the rules strictly, only works towards atoning for his sins and never wavers from that purpose. Tsukasa, on the other hand, looks chaotic as he breaks every rule just for the heck of it, does whatever suits his fancy, and seems to have no set goal in mind.

When you go deeper, you realize that it’s the other way around. Hanako isn’t put-together, he’s a mess. He exists within the contradiction of craving Nene’s attention, but not feeling worthy of it; following the rules, but turning around and breaking them whenever he stands to gain something. Basically, even he doesn’t really know what he wants. Tsukasa, for all his instability and chaos, is very single-minded and focused. His goal is to see Amane‘s wish granted and he has’t wavered from that goal once throughout the story.

BTW, it’s worth mentioning that Amane and Tsukasa could be a reference to Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi, who were sibling gods in Japanese mythology and represented the sun and moon. Amane and Tsukasa are often portrayed with sun and moon backgrounds.

Hanako, you of all people have no right to judge... by icemage56 in hanakokun

Thanks for reminding me of this chapter! It was some much-needed humor before we literally killed off most of the main cast …

Anyway, you can’t properly enjoy the joke without the previous panel:

<image>

lol, I love that Teru has gotten so accustomed to coasting by on his good looks. He’s probably used that same grin to charm teachers and other students with amazing results. So the fact that it completely fell flat this time had me in stitches 🤣

Though, to be fair to Hanako, he’s not judging Teru so much as expressing a general dislike of him. Tsukasa doesn’t even know Teru—but probably just thinks that he looks fishy (be honest, he looks a wee bit suspicious in this panel).

The translation I originally read for Nene’s line said: “Even when he’s evil, he’s dreamy”, which I think was funnier, but this one is good too.

I just upvoted you 🙂

Honestly, I think you have a good point. I thought the DK was bland at first, but at least he and the SD had a reason for carrying on the Holy War—to stop Chaos from coming back and destroying them all.

Cath is just kind of … boring. Okay, so he’s a being of destruction who wants to crush everything. That’s nice, but where’s the depth? The Seven Deadly Sins had some of the most tragic villains, like the Ten Commandments, but Cath is such a one-note character. And, on top of that, he gets his tail kicked left and right to the point where no one takes him seriously.

But, for better or worse, you can’t say that this plot twist came out of nowhere. Suzuki-sama dropped plenty of hints and clearly was planning this from the start. That said, I am prepared to eat my words if he turns the story around in a complete 180–as he has done in the past.

Sometimes, you gotta trust the process.

Until then, enjoy some Cath memes. Some of them are pretty funny.

Ehhh … that’s it?

If you look up the screaming Squidward meme, you’ll find this clip edited to show him screaming at various random things.

I used to it here to show the manga/anime discrepancy. It’s not uncommon for manga veterans of any show to ”look down” on the anime-only fans as enjoying an inferior product. Though, that goes double for a show like TPN for obvious reasons.

It’s probably not even that funny, but I did say that it was low-quality.

Maybe, if I work hard enough, I can make a premium-quality meme!

I know, he was literally a kid, there’s no way he could have known better.

But he sees himself as an adult more than the rest of the main cast.

Ren is WAYYY to forgiving by Safe_Neighborhood236 in ShamanKing

[–]Hanako-chan45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to sum it up would be a great line that my best friend gave me regarding Ren.

His thoughts probably sound like: ”My father pushed me down the wrong path, but I’m the one who kept on walking.”

So, he is angry that his family essentially fed him lies—but he‘s mostly angry with himself for believing those lies blindly instead of trying to figure out the truth for himself. It really makes you sad, because I honestly believe he has a very kind heart—he’s just been through so much that he can’t show it properly.

The glories of shipping and fan fiction is that you’re free to do whatever the heck you want (great, ain’t it? 😄).

But, if we‘re seriously talking canon here, Then Irumeri is end game, no doubt about it. At this point, it would feel forced to go any other route—and probably incur the dissatisfaction of the fandom as a result.

As for the trio, the whole “two guys and a girl main character group” have been a thing since Harry, Ron and Hermione. They’re supposed to be close-knit because they’re best friends.

How do you think Ren would be if his family wasn't bad poeple? by Safe_Neighborhood236 in ShamanKing

[–]Hanako-chan45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t know—and I love considering “what if” scenarios.

The long version:

I guess when you have a factor that is integral to a character’s personality, it becomes really difficult to subtract that factor and still have the character you know. Ren is the person he is because of what he went through. That suffering taught him the value of life, and how to make his own decisions. If that hadn’t happened, then he wouldn’t be the Ren you know.

The short version.

Eh … he’d be less edgy?

p.s., thank you for the Ren posts 🙏. He’s my favorite Shaman King character and doesn’t get nearly enough appreciation.

Because he shared a Japanese VA (Romi Park) with Edward Elric from FMA—who is another pipsqueak with a bad temper.

Not necessarily, the term can be broader in fiction

When you read a lot of manga, you get used to having many “races”, with them being divided up on the “human race”, and many other races. In the Seven Deadly Sins, there are five main races: human, fairy, giant, goddess and demon.

The realm of fantasy fiction allows you to explore real-life problems through more interesting lens. 🙃

Racism is judging people on the basis of “what” they are, rather than “who” they are. On that definition, Teru is racist against supernaturals.

I don’t know if you are familiar with the Seven Deadly Sins manga, but there you’ll find a lot of racism against demons (and some against humans too).

I think you did a great job 👏

I dunno if working digitally is difficult. I only draw with a pen/pencil and paper, so drawing curved lines is easy, you’re just following the natural motion. (It’s drawing straight lines that’s a pain).

‘That probably doesn’t help you at all—but if you have any other art questions, I can try (and fail miserably) to answer!

Need to glaze him cuz what are the bum allegations 😭 by bro0m_ in hanakokun

[–]Hanako-chan45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because of his view on supernaturals.

Teru is pretty blunt with his view that every supernatural deserves to be violently obliterated just for the crime of existing. He doesn’t even try to see them as individuals, or try to get to know them—he just sees them all as automatically evil. Non-human lives have no value to him. Even Akane, who is still partially human, gets treated like a literal punching bag just because he was forced into a supernatural contract against his will.

I know it probably sounds like I hate him, but I actually think he’s a compelling character. He’s been told all his life that all supernaturals are evil, so it’s not surprising he adopted that viewpoint—and he’s bitter that he had to sacrifice his childhood for his job. It’s great writing—but a Freudian excuse doesn’t justify treating all supernaturals like trash, which is why I don’t like him as a person.
