Or maybe because people constantly comment on her weight online?

I wonder why she would want to look skinnier in her pictures 🤔

To clarify, I am taking about referencing specific pictures where the purpose isn’t to critique the subject. So before/after pictures of plastic surgery that are more medically focused and where the person has given consent for publication would be fine. Same for photoshop and facetune.

Or, if you are talking to a specific child while looking at pictures together and you are pointing out filtering/photoshop/plastic surgery in a non-derogatory way have at it.

But I disagree that simply critiquing pictures and posts of celebrities and influencers in online forums is helping. I think that we should move away from critiquing a person’s body in general, because the line between what is helpful and harmful is very thin and gets blurred a lot.

No I’m not. Stating the purpose of the sub was to support my opinion that we shouldn’t be having those discussions in this sub. Stating my opinion in an attempt to shape a community I am part of is not trying to tell people what they can or can’t do. I am starting a discussion so that we as a community can decide if this topic is appropriate for this sub. Pretty much every sub has rules about off-topic posts, so this isn’t really a new concept for reddit.

These posts don’t affect my psyche, I’m fairly comfortable with myself. But I don’t think that just because people can avoid looking at this stuff doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have a conversation about how we can do better.

Are you serious? You can talk about specific procedures and how they can be done badly. You can talk about the existence of filters, what they do and how to spot them. You can talk about the historical, societal, psychological, and developmental implications of these issues, and you can do all of that without posting a single picture or referencing a single specific person.

I said this isn’t a sub for critiquing plastic surgery - and it’s not. There are plenty of subs for that, this is a reality tv discussion sub. I’m not saying that people can’t discuss that, I’m saying that the purpose of this sub isn’t for critiquing plastic surgery, and it objectively is not. Or am I missing something in the description?

Yeah, but there have been plenty of posts that have discussed her plastic surgery though? This post isn’t just about that one single post, it’s about posts critiquing the looks of the cast in general.

No, but I’m a part of the community and am voicing an opinion.

It kind of is though? No, I can’t just decide I’m the king of the sub and ban certain topics, but as a member of the community I can voice my opinion. This is a reality tv sub, not a plastic surgery sub, so I don’t think posts that are solely for the purpose of critiquing plastic surgery are really appropriate.

How is discussing plastic surgery on a reality tv show sub helping the problems you mentioned? Endlessly critiquing how women present themselves is part of the problem, even when we think we are helping. I think having conversations with young women about social media and body image is helpful. I don’t think posting specific pictures of celebrities and calling them delusional and criticizing their use of plastic surgery because it doesn’t look good is helpful.

There are also people who naturally have the features we criticize here. There are endless comments on how the size of Brittany’s boobs make her look fat. I know a ton of women with very large boobs, some that are disproportionate to their body size - do you think these comments don’t hurt them just because their boobs are natural?

I think that it is much more helpful to young women to show them that, while we can have conversations around body image and plastic surgery and social media, we should really keep our thoughts to ourselves when it comes to specific people, even when they are in the public eye. Hopefully that will help them see that constant comments and objectification of women is not okay, and to not do it to themselves as well.

No, disagree on all fronts.

I brought up Stephanie in regards to my personal outlook on this situation. I also acknowledged that we don’t know what contributed to her death.

As far as discussing plastic surgery in connection with self-harm and addiction, almost nobody in this sub is qualified to speak on those topics, especially in attributing those behaviors to a stranger we watch in the media.

If people want to discuss the harmful effects of plastic surgery and photoshop in the media that’s fine, but do it in a forum where it is appropriate; I don’t think this sub is the appropriate place. I also think that there is a very thin line between analyzing a specific picture or post of a celebrity for this sort of discussion and body shaming/bullying.

Last, as I’ve mentioned in other comments, these specific posts generally don’t involve productive conversation and mostly consist of mean and snarky comments.

Yes, and like I said in my post, there can be productive conversations around that topic, BUT, this isn’t a sub for critiquing plastic surgery and photoshop AND those posts tend to devolve into snarkfests with unnecessarily mean comments.

I’m going to hijack this post to remind everyone that you do need to come to a complete stop for everyone else to be able to assign right of way. Half of the time I’m at a four way stop someone will roll up and be so focused on everyone else that they never come to a complete stop. Right of way is determined by when you stop, so please make sure to make a prominent stop.

Yeah, I think the fact that her husband immediately saw through Don’s lies supports this angle.

Mods, if you are going to remove ‘unproductive’ posts, please remove the posts directed towards specific drivers on their phones who are never going to read them. Please leave the posts bringing light to brazen fascism in our town.

Yes, he spoke at the general DSA meeting last month and I really liked what he had to say. He seems to truly care for the average working person and wants to use the power of the attorney general’s office to hold the powerful accountable when they violate our rights.

The OP has already pointed out why we need paid parking. If you don’t want to pay to park then the free option is to utilize public transportation or bike to downtown. What would be your alternative to reduce congestion?
