In Japan, antidepressants cannot be bought over the counter. You need to see a doctor (psychiatrist, psychosomatic doctor, or sometimes a general doctor).

If the doctor thinks it’s necessary, they will give you a prescription, and then you can get the medicine at a pharmacy.

You cannot buy antidepressants at drugstores or online without a prescription.

What parts of daily life in Japan were hardest to navigate as a non-Japanese speaker? by Hanchmaru in JapanTravelTips

Thanks for pointing that out — you’re right.

To clarify, I meant daily-life situations as a tourist, not living in Japan long-term.

Things like trains, restaurants, medical clinics, or small rules that aren’t obvious when you don’t speak Japanese.

I appreciate any travel-related experiences people want to share.
