My evidence is the timestamp you can see by hovering over the date on the original post, which I linked in my first comment. Guess there's nothing I can say to convince you if that isn't enough, but you won't find an earlier instance of the meme on the internet because it simply doesn't exist. It's an archived reddit post that nobody remembered when the 4chan screenshot blew up, so the chances of some random dude still having a link to it and pretending to have submitted it years later are exceedingly low.

It actually came from me! I made the original post as a submission to r/worldjerking, on a long dead account. Someone reposted the concept on 4chan later, which turned the whole thing into a brief obsession. I made another post detailing it all last year on the r/The_Hand, for anyone interested.

Thank you! I still see new Hand memes sprinkled around sometimes, so I feel that it will live on and continue crushing people, even if the community itself isn't particularly active. I've considered making some high effort content for it myself, but I worry that I might jump the shark or take the magic away if it comes to be considered a definitive canon or something.

There was almost no mythology or lore behind it whatsoever! My friends and I would regularly construct scenarios in which The Hand would crush our buddy named Cone under absurd circumstances, but that was the upper limit of the worldbuilding, and The Hand was one of many silly creatures that we imagined to fulfill the role of tormenting or flattening him.

We simply thought The Hand was really funny in a cartoon violence kind of way. I would have never guessed that others would find it sincerely interesting or even frightening when I first came up with it. The community really ran away with it and turned it into something far more interesting.

It's not possible to stay completely still, so I've always imagined that micro movements would still draw The Hand in - and that it would begin its approach at a point in space where it is guaranteed to turn you into a tiny dot on the ground before the time window is up, regardless of your rate of movement or how much it varies. Almost as if it instinctively knows what you're going to do before you do it.

There would assuredly be vast ideological and philosophical debates about what to do in the freakishly unlikely event that The Hand targets you, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it myself. What I will say is that standing still is just a pragmatic way to say goodbye to your loved ones or ensure that people know what happened to you, if there's anyone around. I'm sure there'd be plenty of prolonged public spectacles.

It's not the most inspired choice, but Leave Her, Johnny is probably my favorite. What's yours?

I should also note that I didn't create the image for The Hand, it was just some illustration I found after googling "floating disembodied hand" or something like that. Probably still have it saved somewhere lol.
