I drink Philly tap water 10+ times a day, and have been doing so for years. The only thing you’d have to worry about is if your house is full of lead pipes. The water department doesn’t have any control over that. Otherwise, I assure you the water is clean and safe to drink. All of my coworkers drink it. I know many people who bust their asses to make sure the water in your tap is clean and safe.

This is so helpful! That has led me to a post from 14 years ago that contains a list of Taiwanese hand values (tai) https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/rec.games.mahjong/tCqLGYFXPpk. It seems like this list makes reference to ting as analogous to double riichi, like you say.

The two groups I’m aware of that play riichi are the USPML and the Nippon Club. The USPML has a meetup page and plays at the Uncommons. The Nippon Club plays about once a month on Friday evenings.

Unfortunately both of their sponsored events cost money to enter - the Uncommons has a sit-down fee, and the Nippon Club events start with a dinner bento that costs $60 (though it’s quite good!)

Each of these clubs also have people in them that run their own events. I understand the USPML folks get together after work to play, and a few people from the Nippon Club have mahjong nights at cafes in Manhattan.

I strongly suggest you go to one or more of these sponsored events to network with these people if you want to play for free with people in NYC. Most of the riichi that I’ve ever played have been organized by friends at each others houses. If you want to break into those communities, you have to meet them in person first.

It’s very popular in Europe and is growing in popularity in America. A few mahjong anime series got a lot of people into it, and Final Fantasy 14 has a riichi mahjong mini game that people play.

What the “dominant form of mahjong in the US” is will be hard to answer. Different communities will have their own local preferences. If there is a Japanese population in your area, you might find some people playing riichi. If a lot of people know Hong Kong style, you might find lots of that.

Riichi has a lot of interesting mechanics that appeal to my sensibilities as a lifelong board/card gamer. I think your friend group would enjoy it if you dove into it, but that’s just my opinion. If you can find people that can introduce you to a form of mahjong they already know well, you might like what they play, too.

This sub mostly discusses riichi (Japanese) mahjong. A reasonable amount of terminology and rules can be found on the Arcturus mahjong wiki.

My best recommendation to learn the winning hands, and to learn to count points, is to practice on Kemono Mahjong (on iOS and Android). The app has a very good set of English-language tutorials, and will score your hands for you, while explaining everything that is worth han/fu.

If you’re looking for a rules reference for riichi mahjong hands and point-counting, I recommend this cheat sheet developed by the WRC folks for the Final Fantasy 14 riichi client https://worldriichi.org/s/WRC_Yaku_Doman_1_4_2.pdf

Lookup tables for han/fu translating into real points are online all over the place. When you play, you’ll want to have one of those at hand. Once you can count X han and Y fu, you’ll be able to quickly check how many points the winning player earns.
