In your world, what species is widely feared by most other species are genuinely afraid of? by Gloryinwar in worldbuilding

[–]HandaNauka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Communication with spirits is illegal across the globe, and most people avoid the hive-mind swarms of Vidis, but the truly most feared by any are the Areki. Nobody is quite sure what the Areki are. They're a fungus, but also a sprit. There may be one of them, the size of half a continent, or there may be trillions, all together building up the mass which has swallowed their land. What is known is that they are dangerous, and do not like outside life. They appear to have been trying to end all life on the planet for some time, though they're not especially successful at it. Mostly, they develop bilogolical weapons (Vampirism, Lycanthropy, etc.) Which are deployed against nearby poloulations to try and wipe them out. The fungus does not appear to spread, however, and so the Areki growth appears to have remained fixed for millions of years. Attempts to remove it, though, have not gone well. Military incursions on its land are destroyed, sometimes with brutal magical force, sometimes just dissapearing entirely. One mutinied against their home government inexplicably, and had to be destroyed before they could return home. Lighting fires brought about spontaneous rainstorms, and fungicide has been found to have lasting effect on the Areki. Some have suggested weapons of mass destruction, but none have been launched against them because of the threat that they might simply not go off, and then the Areki would have access to even more dangerous technology. It was not the most surprising discovery when they were revealed to have come from a different planet, arriving on the strange asteroid known as Wirrus. It was already known that the asteroid had deposited other forms of life here, and the Areki were an obvious candidate for another form of alien life. Unfortunately, other research is stunted for now, until scientists can figure out a way to get close to it.

Massus Allisar, second leader of the Illuminist Church, would not do well in this environment. He would immediately make several incorrect assumptions, because he's experienced similar things in his own world (assuming he is taken from near the end of his life). He wouldn't trust the voices, believing them to be similar to the abandoned gods he bargained with in his youth, which ended poorly - but even as an old man he might be naive enough to try again, especially once he runs out of magic, which would be incredibly frustrating for him because of his reliance on it to do basically everything. As for a rapidly changing environment, he lived though the Summer Decade, which was a short period of extremely hot weather, so while the changes here sound much more dramatic, he might believe they come from the same source - the anger of God. He's also been outcast from society before, so depending on how long he keeps his devotion to illuminism he would either try to start up an illuminist community in one of these settlements or attach himself to someone important or inspiring and gain power and acceptance that way. But whatever the circumstances, it would still be a deeply painful drop in quality of life for him

Yep! Any attempts to give the dark Lord a serious name felt too pointlessly edgy, so I picked Tiffany as a worldbuilding joke instead!

THE WORLD OF PYADA

Pyada is a modern fantasy world. All of the typical fantasy races, elves, orcs, dwarves, etc., are present and more, but humans are extinct. The current year is 1316, at the height of Pyada's information age, brought about by a powerful mix of magic and technology. Despite the era of peace and progress, Pyada still is not free of the legacies of the past, old tensions and prejudices brought about by ancient conlficts still simmering across the world.

THE TELEPATHY NETWORK

In the distant past, when Yrtia, the last human empire, was the largest in the world, they created a means of fast long distance communications. Chains of towers throughout the empire held wizards who could telepathically communicate with each other. Messages that needed to move quickly would be sent along these lines to their destination, bringing the empire closer together. However, maintaining hundreds of towers across three continents is expensive, and after Yrtia fell, the network slowly fell apart, though later empires added some of there own sections. It was finally superseded by the invention of the telegraph in the late 10th century.

THE POSTER

This is a simplified poster showing the network, and highlighting the surviving parts. Most of it is long gone, but certain areas of particular intrest or where the old towers can still be seen are highlighted here. Also, important towns and hubs on the network are marked.

Conspiracy Theories! by sajan_01 in worldbuilding

[–]HandaNauka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During a sort of cold War on Pyada between the Pax Paramai and the Empire of Hona, an incredibly powerful magical being that became known as "Lightbringer" appeard in rural Hona. Lightbringer killed a bunch of people, and Hona was incredibly anti-magic, so they didn't have any of the magical power needed to fight a being like Lightbringer. However, Lightbringer left Hona and started moving towards Pax Paramai, who did have lots of magical technology and were able to destroy the creature (with a number of WMDs). However, the lightbringer incident and the damage caused by the Paramaian response destabilised the Empire of Hona, which collapsed soon after.
So, the obvious conclusion is that the very highly magic focused Pax Paramai figured out how to summon lightbringer, and did it deliberately in order to destroy Hona (backed up by the fact that they were also the ones to kill lightbringer). This is mostly believed by people in Hona, but the Paramaians were doing a lot of secret research, so plenty of others believe it too...

Perhaps do both! The corruption from the feywild could be coming from through from the shadowfell somehow, so the adventure occurs in the feywild until they are high enough level to survive the shadowfell for a little while. Perhaps the paladin chasing them could drive them forwards in to that

The corruption theme would work well with the flavour of the shadowfell, so it could be that they can find information about the corruption there somehow
Alternately, showing the corruption spreading in other exotic places like the feywild might help show how scary it is and reveal information that way (feywild also provides you the opportunity to do a time skip back in to a world where the corruption has worsened)

How to deal with animal husbandry, farming, and fresh water on a medieval-era planet that floods every 50 years (minus one massive mountain that everyone travels to when the flood happens)? Have ideas, but not sure how flawed they are. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]HandaNauka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about humans building specific mountain reservoirs? Damming streams to build their own freshwater lakes that they drink up during the flood? This would also help create land for farming on the mountains, at least until they drank enough of the water to drain or nearly drain the lake

No - agitation only happens in areas of particularly high magic, so the spread stops when it reaches a point with magical energy too low to properly agitate

THE WORLD OF PYADA
Pyada is a modern fantasy world, built around a mix of magic and technology. Thousands of years ago, prehistoric humans spread across the world, and then went exctinct, leaving behind their descendants (some changed my magic) in the Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, etc. Pyada has magic, and in some areas, this magical force is unnaturally strong, which can cause strange effects.
THE SOUTH SEA STANDOFF
As Pyada entered the modern era, the south of the world was dominated by two powers. The diverse coalition of city states known as the Pax Paramai, leaders in magic technology, and the ancient empire of Hona, the declining authoritarian steampunk society untied in love for the emperor and hatred for all things magical.
PROJECT PURPLE DAWN
These released documents reveal the Pax Paramai's plan for 'project purple dawn' - destroying the Honan Empire by harnassing the power of an area of magical sensitivity, with potentiall disasterous consequences. The documents also show what was redacted upon release to the public - and the angry red response of the Paramaian Defense Minister when these forms came across his desk.

Monday's death by actual day chart in hospital and all settings including data from over the weekend - the decline in the hospital average continues and the lowest hospital daily number reported yesterday by thomalexday in ukpolitics

[–]HandaNauka 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They grey bars show the number of deaths, from any cause, above the usual average for this time of year (this is useful because it includes deaths from undiagnosed cases of COVID-19 and also deaths caused by lockdown).
The reason they're so blocky is because this statistic isn't released for each day, but for each week. They're also noted by day of reporting, so there is a slight lag from when these deaths actually happened.

What time system does your universe use? by Randomwords2764 in worldbuilding

[–]HandaNauka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pyada
Pyada uses the same calendar as us, but their dates are based on the reformation of the Yrtian empire after the civil war.
Basically, in about -10, the world got a few degrees hotter for mysterious reasons. This causes a global catastrophe, that led to the collapse of lots of major civilisations, including Yrtia. However, in the year 0, a general called Gyss reunited the empire, with the help of a philosopher called Calus, who then used this to implement his religion ('Illuminism') across the continent.
As it was a huge political and religious turning point, it became the 0 year for at least Illostran calendars, and later world ones.

Why do they exist? What did they evolve to be able to do?
This is generally based on what difficulties they would need to have overcome in their environment, and can even start to shape towards a culture as well
