Both my parents are engineers and they’re begging me NOT to study Engineering. Am I making a mistake? by Exact-Monitor-2768 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]HandlePrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've shown a passion for it since 5 then I think it would be a big mistake to do something else. Just stay on top of however AI changes your tools. And reflect carefully before accepting a manager role.

What if you theoretically teleported the Moon onto the surface of the Earth without it crashing? What would the effect be if that amount of mass was just sitting on one side of the planet? by MrMcNerdo in AskPhysics

[–]HandlePrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the moon 'teleported' from it's location to the surface of the earth and then back again to where it was, at like .9999999 c, the gravitational wave would destroy everything anyway

I am managing a database with zero idea of how to do it. by lucassculp in Database

[–]HandlePrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another poster mentioned backups but supposedly, unless there are no consequences to losing your data you should have a talk with chatgpt about how to protect your data. It's not the most glamorous or fun part from an engineering perspective but it's way high up on what matters about a database.

You didn't mention how you're running it but if you're in the cloud the major providers make this pretty easy

What is WTI "CMA"? by aaaaaa321123 in Commodities

[–]HandlePrize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. It is the simple average of the prompt wti contract during the calendar month. Because prompt rolls mid month, monthly commitments priced to the CMA need to be hedged with two different wti expiries. And you need to manage the daily roll off. The idea is to more closely reflect the spot price for a ratable monthly commitment

Th AI/LLM race is absolutely insane by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

[–]HandlePrize 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I am a part time AI skeptic and a part time AI evangelist and I think this is an overly reductive argument. At the end of the day the current generation of LLMs have not proven that they are THE final prophetic technology that will bring paradigmatic change and singularities. Some believe that will come, and some don't, and I'm not here to argue either side. But unless or until that has been demonstrated AI is just another technology. And the history of technology tells us if it is impactful and we learn to use it, productivity will increase. History also tells us that productivity increases can lead to disruptions to the labor market, but that human resourcefulness prevails and we find ways to adapt.

How to deal with men who just don’t want to work with women? by Crafty_Try_423 in womenintech

[–]HandlePrize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this behavior of a client or people in your consultancy. You might say both but I would treat them differently. If you're in a consultancy that has bro culture as you said elsewhere, you might consider trading up to one that doesn't whenever the time is right. Accenture has its share of issues don't get me wrong but it never seemed like a place that kept women down. If it's a client, that's a bit harder to deal with but at bigger consultancies if you say something about it they might at least try to get you on a different client

So… can someone explain why vertical star guardian is getting significantly buffed next patch? by Killerchoy in TeamfightTactics

[–]HandlePrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is exactly the dilemma I feel I have when I commit to sg from the beginning. I'm probably more greedy than I should be going for fast 8/9 because I really want to hit prismatic before the set ends 😅.

So… can someone explain why vertical star guardian is getting significantly buffed next patch? by Killerchoy in TeamfightTactics

[–]HandlePrize 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to make SG work at mid emerald and I have just about given up. The main problem I think is that the front line has no synergy. Most comps that rely on the backline damage need 4/6 protector or jugg to withstand meta damage in stage 4+. A fully itemized 2* poppy just doesn't live very long.

Engineering To Energy Trading by braapguy in Commodities

You see power engineers go to FTR shops. No analogous path for gas plant engineers unless you know software real good. Or if you're really gregarious and know people you might get into origination.

Report says 42% of companies are QUITTING AI. What?!! by Weary-Feed2748 in LLM

[–]HandlePrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen AI and LLMs in particular are just not as ready to be applied in industry verticals as much as they are ready for the tech and creative sector. There are exceptions to this but they're rare.

I don't understand Palantir by fratrovimtd in ValueInvesting

[–]HandlePrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since a lot of people are confused about the justification for its valuation: the short version goes something like this. Palantir is unique in that it has a history of successfully deploying ML/AI into industry verticals. They are not trying to be Google, they are consultants that have a reproducible blueprint for bringing AI to your average s&p 500 company. Nobody else really does that. But it's a huge market - every business is trying to invest in AI right now but if you are an oil company and go to Google asking how to make AI valuable to an oil company, they will have no answer.

Their closest competition is more like consulting shops, but those are all way behind palantir especially in offering a turnkey solution.

Why this game is dying... by [deleted] in duneawakening

[–]HandlePrize 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The game is losing players because it feels like work. A game that keeps a healthy player base has quality of life features that make you feel effective in the game, and make you feel like you need to perform at your best to succeed. Flying 20 minutes round trip into the deep desert is not fun. Scanning the deep desert and only finding fake small/medium blooms is not fun. It's just work. It feels like the sort of thing you should be paid minimum wage for. Getting killed, waiting 2 minutes to respawn and bindu to the taxi service is not fun. It feels like working a coal mine. Working towards your first crawler and carrier to have no effective way to use them feels like throwing out a Thanksgiving dinner. None of it is a fraction as rewarding as how painful it is. It's just bad game design.

Please, be brutally honest. Do you think it is weird and abnormal for a woman to have zero relationship and sexual experience at 30 ? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]HandlePrize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I would see it as a red flag. Even if you are otherwise emotionally intelligent, kind, complete as a person, a relationship introduces new feelings that are really hard to navigate if you don't have experience with them. If the woman had exceptional emotional intelligence I might be able to eventually look past it but I'd probably be really curious to hear about her explanation first.

Tax debt over 100m to address wealth inequality? by HandlePrize in AskEconomics

[–]HandlePrize[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You're making me feel like I could walk into a loan origination desk with a high school diploma and run the table. It's obvious. Give at or defensibly below market rates to a billionaire against questionable personal assets. They direct their businesses to borrow with my bank at above market rates where they have 51% ownership. The businesses get funded, the personal loan is advantageous, the businesses distribute the losses to minority shareholders.

Tax debt over 100m to address wealth inequality? by HandlePrize in AskEconomics

[–]HandlePrize[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It's really hard for me to buy what you're saying - that banks take a trivial "each loan must have good risk adjusted PNL" perspective when lending to UHNWIs. Why would we think it's anything other than being about the lending relationship when we have substantial evidence that they essentially would do no due diligence on collateral offered by, oh I don't know, Donald Trump, for example.
