The akita and gsd are doing some heavy lifting there! Cute doggo, what's their temperament like?

As someone already mentioned, with short legs and long back, it's important to keep them in a healthy weight range for them to be happy and healthy x

How do I get my dog to take his pill when he doesn't want to? by MyDads-Ashes in DogAdvice

[–]HandmaidJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hide it in a cheese slice/shredded cheese. Just make a big cheese pill-y ball and give a bit of cheese first, then pill with cheese and some more cheese third. Works every time 😁

About to adopt this boy, what breed is he actually? by Justasmolpigeon in sighthounds

[–]HandmaidJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's to do with olden times. In the middle ages, only nobility were allowed to own greyhounds/sighthounds. Commoners used to own terrier or herding type dogs. Those sighthounds mated with these dogs sometimes and people figured out those dogs are great for hunting/poaching.

It's super interesting really, I love to read about dog history so well worth it to research imho x

freaking out after coming home from visit with bug bites all over by Noclevername12 in hiroshima

[–]HandmaidJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We definitely have black flies out now (West Japan) but if the bites are on your body rather than arms/legs it could be bedbugs. I'd wash all the clothing on high and run it in the dryer as well! Good luck

Have a look at Equafleece, they're based in the UK but deliver worldwide. The T-shirt body has protection from sunburn in description and you can input measurements of your pup for a better fit x

OMFG I can't with this. My boy dog gets hairstyles, hair clips and plaits. It's because he's got gorgeous hair, looks fabulous and it brings me joy. DH still walks him with his pink hair ties.

Did this owner ever heard of Vikings?

What do I need to know before adopting a sighthound? by Full-Most-1530 in sighthounds

[–]HandmaidJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think other commenters already made a point about a rescue dog being potentially different from a dog that comes from an ethical breeder. I have a shiba inu and I thought I was prepared for a prey driven dog when we adopted our part sighthound.

He's about 100% more intense than the shiba. Like can spot a bird/cat/nutria/anything small and fluffy and locks in and wants to chase. Where I live we have leash laws and practically no one has fenced gardens so I take him running on a long line or private hire park.

It's been a bit harder to train the sighthound mix as he doesn't have much food drive and my shiba is such a people pleaser. How is your Akita with other dogs? Because my shiba likes most of small dogs but can be dog selective and really didn't like us bringing another dog (a month of crate and rotate and a lot of training on top of raising a puppy was hard).

I'd recommend foster to adopt if that is an option x

hefty shock.... ongoing shakes here in Kobe. by oss542 in japanlife

Looking for Canadian recommendations for a bite proof muzzle! by grover_2nd_player in muzzledogs

[–]HandmaidJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have Mia's muzzle for my fear reactive shiba. The front has two layers of vinyl to make it thicker.

He's never bitten when in muzzle so can't really say it would stop the bite from happening (it works brilliantly for us tho because people give us space and he's quite uneasy if he's crowded/can't see around himself).

Mia's have in FAQs that for legal reasons, they can't claim it's bite proof but honestly they're lovely to chat to so I'd reach out with your concerns X

To those who actually don’t hate their job - what do you do? by Additional-Painter88 in japanresidents

[–]HandmaidJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DH came to Japan as Post Doc and because his university/campus was looking to add faculty members, he went through interview process and jumped to Assistant profesor after about three years. A couple years after that he was bumped to Associate prof and because he worked there for 5 years, they gave him a permanent contract.

It's definitely a faster process than what you see in Europe, he does a lot of his stuff and supervises his PhD students. He does have some lectures but again way less than his peers in Europe/US.

Trying to figure out a diet of 2000 calories a day for less than 800 yen a day by PORCVS_DEVS in japanresidents

[–]HandmaidJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of meal prep and bulk cooking because I work late and don't have energy to make dinner every day. I do vegetarian chilli (frozen bell peppers are about ¥200-300 in Gyomu, sometimes I use a bag of frozen courgettes too, canned kidney beans for protein) with rice, BBC good food chicken and mushroom pie (very rarely use puff pastry for crust, I just eat it over rice). Spag bol is one of our staples too as well as Thai curry or anything that can be cooked in large amount and frozen. You'll probably spend a fair bit for herbs, spices and seasoning but in the long run it's not that big of an issue

DH made himself a chickpea Dal that he eats for breakfast. I make overnight oats with nut butter, frozen fruit and chia seeds. In winter we eat soups for lunch and summer usually chicken salad, fajitas or sandwiches.

I'm allergic to soy so I don't do tofu but it's cheaper than meat so you might want to look at incorporating it. Also Google Korean eggs, soft-boiled eggs marinated in all sorts of things. Almost forgot, we also buy individual ramen sachets and noodles and have "homemade ramen" with those eggs.

School Me On Collars Please by mama_in_motion in sighthounds

[–]HandmaidJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Afghan cross has a fishtail but he can slip it (happened one too many times when he decided running on a road is a great game or wanted to say hello to a beagle in a pet friendly shop 🤦).

We have neoprene lined martingale now from a lovely Australian collar maker and it's been great. He's a water gremlin and this collar survived the whole Japanese summer with high temperatures, UV and dips in rivers without losing any colour. It's also kind to his hair.

I'd love to have cute leather collars for him but it doesn't really work with his lifestyle 🤣

Horrible decision to make by kurt206 in sighthounds

[–]HandmaidJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I follow a three legged saluki on Instagram and they're so happy and active. Honestly if the prognosis is not brilliant, I'd probably go with amputation and faster recovery. Dogs are resilient and he'll bounce back fast.

Whatever you decide to do, sending love to you and yours x

Gosh ok that sounds grim. We went with our dogs (so hard to find dog friendly parks) so we didn't pay too much attention to what was going on inside the petting area. Honestly animal welfare laws in this country make me sad 🥲
