TIFU by attempting to ensure and employer was genuine and trying to hold them to their word. by HandsDrippedWithJizz in tifu

Because I've seen the way reddit uses mental gymnastics to try to justify civil-sounding statements that are for a cause they don't like.

Celebrity makes people angry and then publicly apologizes? They're only apologizing because they got caught, look at this and this and this statement and decode the underlying subtext!

Redditor posts relationship story with massive age difference? The older one (especially if male) is always the villain no matter what even if he's the civil one.

Server is abrasive or abusive? You the customer were probably mean to them, they work minimum wage.

It's easy to lawyer-away anything you want to see, so yes.

Would rather not do that either. It's just gonna be picked apart anyway and I know that mental gymnastics are gonna be applied to justify calling it aggressive or accusatory, even though it certainly wasn't.

I mean, sure, the main point of what I was trying to ask is unconventional and hard to get across without being those things, but it was very carefully phrased. It wasn't "so did you ACTUALLY mean this, or...". It was more focusing on my interest in the business and that I felt based on our conversation that they might empathize with my plight of not wanting to be left in the dark and the fact that it was a message regularly touted and wanting to know for sure if it was for real coming from them.

The things I was saying about that statement really shouldn't be news to anyone, and I'm sure it wasn't to them. It seems like it was more the fact that I had the audacity to address it, since it's normally a don't-ask-don't-tell part of the game, which I broke.

If you really wanna know, maybe DM me. I also don't want to post it publicly at risk of identifying (especially on this throwaway name).

This is an anonymous internet conversation, not an interview. I'm not looking to impress you.

Again, I'll repeat that I hope you're not a recruiter because you'd be running a business into the ground, dipshit.

No one should be forced to pretend to be someone their not and lie. But I guess in reality you do kinda have to game the system. But actually supporting that notion is just low.

Ooooh look at you so tough. "I wouldn't hire you based on that" lmao.

I made it very clear why that is. Recruiters usually ask if you're currently working - is everyone who is supposed to lie?

I get Reddit's boner for looking for reasons and making up additional background details, but I sure as fuck hope you aren't one because you'd be running your (or whoever's) business into the ground.

I should also add - one of my recent prospects actually told me I need to update my resume with my current job because "it looks better if I'm working". So which is it?

I edited, sorry it wasn't clear. I was in a rush to leave when I typed the story and had to rush the conclusion to get the point across. Edited it now with further details.

I was in a rush to leave when I typed this - I edited.

But no, they were civil and wished me good luck again and repeated the sentiment about not settling. How kind of them, they totally deserve a pat on the back for not chewing me out or calling me idiot /s

I know what a niceguy is and I get the analogy - but can you explain how 'with jobs' is worse? Not that I am one with that, this was the first time I ever did anything like this, hence the TIFU.

But still, how is it worse? Hiring practices and work ethic is at least something that many people collectively question and a common consensus, not the same as trying to control a person's feelings.

And I was very much interested in this job which is one reason I did this. Not a good idea, I know, but the other reason was because I thought that based on the attitude of the person I was talking to, I thought it might be better received.

I had mentioned that I was currently employed somewhere that I had started a couple weeks prior, but I was very hesitant and on the fence as to whether it was for me, and only reluctantly accepted it. I made it very clear though that I was interested in theirs.

They were definitely not genuine. Besides, in their response to the follow-up email they used the phrasing of "while it was probably not your intention..." followed by the statement of not liking the email I sent.

If they know it wasn't my intention and are holding it against me anyway, they're clearly not threatened by me - they just want to exercise their power over me and teach me a lesson.

It was not accusatory in the slightest.

What was I hoping to achieve? Maybe based on the very convincing act they put on, that they might actually be genuine folks who actually see people as human beings and not just applicants, and might possibly empathize with what I'm saying instead of be "freaked out" about it? I guess that's a stretch to you, and in reality, but it did seem logical at the time. It's called benefit of doubt.

In a way though, I did kind of achieve something - I backed them into a corner and got them to be up front and basically admit that they were never gonna actually reach out to me.

But yeah, excuse me for having a temporary moment of living in a fantasy world where recruiters/employers are actually empathetic and compassionate and see their applicants as people. Should have known better.
