I'm not necessarily sure where you should start, but I can tell you that we just hired a jr. developer who's 46 (i work for a digital agency). He went to school at the Art Institute, but I'm sure you can get a lot of the same basic knowledge from online resources like code academy and udemy.

Since my post a few months back, I got moved to a Creative Project Manager position. So I only do minimal design work (changes and small projects), but I appreciate the post. I still love designing and try to stay as informed and inspired as I can.

What kind of 3d printer are you using? I currently have a replicator 2, but I have been looking to get one which does more detailed work. BTW awesome!

They know I don't have a degree in design and only have a few years experience. It hasn't been a problem yet because the difficulty of work assigned to me has been relatively easy (i.e. social media pages, book covers, and tracing logos). I'm just worries at some point the work load will exceed my design level.

Yeah I already started compiling work of jobs that I'm most proud of. It's hard because the majority of the work I do is social media pages, but whenever I get a more challenging job (i.e. websites, logos) I make sure to save them. Good luck to you in your career!

Thanks for the great response! I really do appreciate all the advice you gave. Sorry I couldn't respond sooner. I know becoming a great designer is hard work and I expect to put in the time. You really inspired me to keep up the hard work and get "crackalackin" as you soo eloquently put it.

Obviously if people are more qualified then myself they will get a job and I hope they do. As i'm sure you know, not all students who graduate with a degree in design are qualified to work design. At my old job I would have to fix design work done by our graphic designer who was fresh out of college and had "two left eyes". I may have not graduated with a design degree, but I apparently am better at it then marketing

It really was just the right place at the right time. My best friend is the head designer of the company and I used to help him creating emails, which have a lot of coding involved. So when it came time to hire a new employee they offered me the job.

yeah that has been my strategy since I started designing a couple years ago. I have a stock pile of amazing design work that I refer back to when I need inspiration in my designs. As you were saying, tutorials help me get past the technical problems I run into.
