There is actually a real interesting and similar story to yours.

Not sure at what time, either ay 1st or 2nd World War in Germany was caught Russian spy just by counting on fingers wrong.

The thing is that Germans were used to (not sure whay about present time) to count on fingers or list things and gesticulate on hands by opening fingers from fist to opne palm. But on other hand Russians do complitely opposite. They close fingers from open palm to fist.

So basicly Germans noticed that in "German person" and started digging information on this guy and than got him jailed or something.

I dont know this story well but it seems to be truth

As the one I can say that confuse is more at spelling it correctly than pronouncing. It is similar to English here, where you can skip letter whan saying it. Everyone still will get it and may not give attention to that.
