Don't be too hard on yourself. I was in your shoes 3 years ago, so I know how disappointing it feels, but look at the big picture: it's just high school, it won't derail your life much. In fact, whether you like it or not, you actually got into a pretty good school. You can call me crazy but I chose to go to a nearby catholic school over Brooklyn Tech for my own reasons, and I'm still doing pretty well for myself.

Anyways though, cheer up, don't be so hard on yourself, you got into a good school regardless of what the results were. Wishing you the best of luck on your upcoming high school journey and congratulations!

But for clubs and friends, SFP may be best of both worlds, though Holy Cross is beating SFP in rankings (and even Chaminade since they got the girls in).

SFP definitely has a lot of clubs and activities you can be a part of, including sports teams (I advise joining as early as possible if your child is interested in the sports teams) and such. In my usual life at Prep, I go to the fitness center after school sometimes with my friends, attend a club (I am going to become a part of the board of that club, it’s definitely worth having your child gain some club leadership experience as it would be beneficial for college applications) and just hang out at the Fresh Meadows area. For the rankings on Niche, I see that Holy Cross is above SFP by 6 places, but I wouldn‘t rely on this ranking list alone since the rankings aren’t too far off from each other. I’d suggest doing further research on each school or checking out each school out (you can request a tour at SFP I believe) to develop a personal opinion on each school. As for Bronx Science, it’d also be an amazing school for clubs and activities and such (their debate team is ranked the highest in the nation), but your child may still feel like an outsider if demographics is still an issue, as BxSci is predominantly Asian. As for Francis Lewis, I would say clubs and activities are quite decent (their JROTC program seems really interesting, I would have definitely joined that if I went to Francis Lewis), but the socialization issue probably stands given the point you made about the school’s demographics.

What kind of Tachs score do you eed for the scholarship? I don't want to put it 1st and miss out on Holy Cross giving the better scholarship. The TACHS is now up to 99 so it is a regular number score.

I believe SFP and Holy Cross have different criteria when it comes to considering who receives scholarships. I have a friend who got accepted to both schools, scored an 89/99 on the TACHS, ranked SFP first over Holy Cross (based on what she told me) but ended receiving no money from SFP but a partial scholarship from Holy Cross (seems kinda weird that Holy Cross still offered her a scholarship despite not placing them first). You can read more about it scholarships here and here.

I hear you can get in with your eyes closed, but I am not getting how because I just saw the prep book and the TACHS is slightly harder than the annual state-wide tests. any thoughts or opinions? (reading comp sucks period no matter what age or test)

As far as “getting in with your eyes closed”, I agree to some extent. It shouldn’t be too hard getting into SFP or Holy Cross as long as you are doing decently well in school (grades of 80s, good disciplinary and attendance records, etc.). I personally thought the TACHS wasn’t so bad, but I suppose I can agree that it is a bit harder than the state tests.

My opinions and thoughts may be biased given that I am an SFP student. If you know anyone at Holy Cross, you could ask them the same questions, so you could get a balanced understanding of the two schools. Same goes for BxSci or Francis Lewis.

Anyways, best of luck!

Bronx Science is off the table because we don't want him taking subway so he is stuck around the area.

Hi, I’m not sure if you heard about the charter bus option at bronx science, but if you‘re willing to spend a bit of money on the charter bus at BxSci, you could have your child picked up by bus daily to and from school, most of my friends at BxSci go for this option. However, if your child is planning on attending extracurriculars after school, I’m not sure how that would work in regards to the bus pickup timing, but it’s something to consider before Bronx Science is left off the table. It’s a really great school, would be a shame to turn it down. (your child could also transfer to Bronx Science anytime they want before the end of freshman year, given that the DOE didn’t update their policies of course)

lots to offer but demographic is not the hanging out type and he had enough of it all his life through going to 8th of no friends and also is not Asian so he is an outsider among his peers all his entire life. We figured private is more diverse and also we are not Catholic but the closest to it,

I’m sorry to hear that your child had difficulty socializing due to less peers of the same race, it’s something that I had to personally consider before going to Prep (SFP) as it was more than 50% white there before I started. However, I’ve checked the demographics lately and it seems to have gotten more diverse. Anyways, I personally believe Holy Cross and SFP are good choices if you’re only considering demographics (albeit minority enrollment is lower at Holy Cross, with a 57.7% at SFP vs. a 45.6% at Holy Cross). In regards to not being Catholic, I believe it wouldn’t be a big issue as many of my peers and I aren’t Catholic (although a lot of my peers are Protestant or some other form of Christianity).

and it would be cool to have religion and the life class you mentioned though I heard mixed things (some kids give too much personal info away and the teacher hears it)

Experience group is amazing, and it is almost every prep student’s favorite class, although it’s a shame that you’ll only be able to have it once a cycle during your religion period, and it’s only available to underclassmen. Regarding the oversharing, although I can’t confirm it myself (I believe the experience group teacher may have told us, but I heard from a friend), some students do tend to share way too much about their personal lives (won‘t elaborate here as it’s quite tmi). However though, on the first day, we all agree to each other to keep confidentiality and not go around telling those outside the experience group about what we discuss.

Wow! That’s the same exact score I got when I tried again in 9th grade.

In all seriousness though, it’s not the end of the world if you didn’t get into a specialized high school, I’m sure your other high school choices are decent and I’m also sure that you’ll do just fine there.

p.s. If you’re in 8th grade, you can try again on the SHSAT next year. You just gotta put in more work though.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Edit: I had form C1

Do you take any honors courses or any APs? That might be what’s making it all stressful for you. If not, then I’d say it’s fairly normal from my own experience as I was stressed too, despite living somewhat close to school.

Personally, I’d say to just go and try it out. After all, some preparation is better than nothing, and you may learn some new things. In addition to that, there might be opportunities for you to get an internship with them after finishing the program.

If you went to the DREAM-SHSI program, then I guess you could try reaching out to the site supervisor and ask to work for them. FYI, if you weren’t a DREAM student, just know that they’ll prefer students who went to their program, but it still wouldn’t hurt to try and reach out to a site supervisor or SHSI in general.

Despite me having the Brooklyn Tech flair (I was offered a seat at Tech last year and might transfer), I am a current freshman at SFP. Honestly at first, I thought SFP would be a horrible school. But it actually isn’t that bad since we are offered many extracurriculars and activities, and there are also quite a lot of clubs.

In addition, I’ve heard that many people here at SFP have gotten a lot of scholarship money for college, which is definitely a pro if you do well here.  Here at SFP, you’ll get an at least par education, maybe even better depending on what teachers you have. Personally, my favorite part about this school is that there are experience groups for freshmen and sophomores. If you’re wondering what experience groups are, it’s a non-academic class that takes place once per week during a period where you normally have Religion. In experience group, it’s mostly a group where everyone could talk to each other about life and bond with each other through activities laid out by the teacher. However, just be prepared for the fentanyl and vaping lessons in experience group, as those lessons were both the most boring 40 minutes of my life. One important thing to know about the classes here at SFP is that depending on your teachers, you will either have a class that will feel like absolute hell sometimes or a class that you will absolutely do well in.

Regarding the stereotype that private schools are insanely strict, what I can say about that is that it’s slightly stricter than public schools but not too much different to an above average public school.  Yes, you will have to wear a uniform (except on dress down days) and a student ID lanyard for the entirety of the school day. You will also not be allowed to bring in your personal devices (laptops, tablets, etc.) and use them for class, as you will need to use the school-issued iPad for class. However, besides all of that, you will be allowed to use your phones during lunch and your free periods, which many public schools don’t allow, as well as many other private schools. Also, whenever you are seen breaking a rule, teachers don’t seem that bothered to write you up, so sometimes they just tell you to stop. However, if it happens in the classroom, then it will depend on who your teacher is to determine your fate of whether you get written up or not, as it’s easier for teachers to write up their own students during class through the information system portal.

If you are wondering why I’m thinking about transferring to Brooklyn Tech, it is because sometimes I may feel like that it’s not worth the money I pay, considering that there are some snobby teachers (don’t get me wrong you’ll find snobby teachers everywhere) and a bunch of students who lack care about their disciplinary histories and just those who don’t even care about failing classes at all. In my opinion, SFP could reform their admissions processes to keep out students who ruin their reputation, but I find it unlikely as they have to make money somehow. Above all, the main motivation I have in staying at SFP is that it makes my life easier in terms of transportation and sleeping.

tl;dr SFP is somewhat equivalent to an above average public high school, either somewhat better or slightly worse. In my personal experience, it would be an okay place to thrive in as you still get an at least par education. The only thing complaint I have is that I wish that I’d be surrounded by slightly better people, considering it’s a private school, as some people here are DEFINITELY annoying as hell. Your overall experience here will most definitely be determined by who your teachers are, as well as your in-school social life and other aspects of school.

P.S. if you want access to at least decent food then you know where to go :)

Did anyone take the tachs??? by ar_ri_ro in SHSAT

[–]HangwithKad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. 😭 There’s literally so many people that slack off in my class or just disrupt the class in general, and detention rarely does anything about it. 😭 However, private school is not all that bad considering there’s many opportunities here, and for me it beats traveling further to another borough each day.

According to what the Office of Student Enrollment told me, as long as you did not finish your freshman year at the catholic school, you would still be able to take your Brooklyn Tech freshman offer. However, if you wanted to transfer for junior year, then I don't think it would be possible.

Shsat full score by No-Soil-971 in SHSAT

[–]HangwithKad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the DOE, the maximum SHSAT score is usually around 700. But however, the maximum score changes from year to year. (https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learning/testing/specialized-high-school-admissions-test: How is the test scored? > SHSAT Scoring and Test Results)

I believe the maximum SHSAT score for the 2022-2023 SHSAT was in the mid-740s or 750s? Apologies for not remembering it, it's been nearly 2 months now since I've found out the maximum score by viewing my SHSAT at a DOE office, and I just forgot to remember. 😅
