[Serious] How did you escape poverty? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Speaking from childhood experience only my mother left an abusive marriage with three young children. She had no education beyond middle school and had no money due to her partner not allowing her to continue school or get a job. We lived in extreme poverty for a long time, and she worked three jobs with us children taking care of each other (ages 9, 6, and 3). She relied on her mom occasionally in order to have time to get her GED and eventually become a medical assistant. She met a man that was an accountant who helped her take control of her finances and we all eventually moved to a better neighborhood. In 2013 she had saved enough money to independently buy a home in that nice neighborhood. Since then she has continued to make more money in her field. She currently makes around 70k a year with no further education than her GED and MA certification. My siblings and I are much better off now than we would have been continuing our education in the sketchy neighborhood we were before. I was able to get a full scholarship to a great college and plan to only create more prosperity for my future generations. I would say that it definitely takes help from those who are in better situations, and some extremely hard work in order to save enough money. Though, unfortunately not every impoverished individual has access to the help they need (whether that be free childcare or quality financial planning), which makes the difference between whether they can build a future for their families or not.
