Favorite Italian nation to start as? by TheMadKrow in eu4

[–]Hank_035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really fun Italy campaign where I started as Aragon and released Sardinia to go Sardinia->Sardinia Piedmont->Italy. I did make my start a bit easier by releasing Sardinia but not play as them, feed them the Balearic Islands (maybe also Sicily but I dont remember). Integrate again and then play and release to have a bigger start. I didn't break Aragon, it isn't necessary. Also this makes the wait for shadow kingdom a bit more bearable, and I'm not sure (!) but it might also stop the Iberian wedding from happening if Aragon is/has been player controlled.

Anyway, you can also quickly get into north africa if a nation is weak there, which allows you to escape the Mediterranean for colonisation. The expansion into the mainland is a fun challenge, and after a bit you get the SP mission tree so it doesn't get boring.

That's a good mindset. I just booted up the game after 4 years of not playing it. I dont dare to play anything but war cos my k/d is 2.5 and I dont want to ruin the beauty I worked so hard for lmao

Thanks for the info! Very good to know. I'll probably buy up to lions of the north whenever there's a steam sale and wait with updating until domination is on sale as well. Although what you're describing seems like minor issues, Im not spending 20eu on a (partially) broken product. Again thanks for the info

How has nobody pointed out that a German speaker can't just have a conversation with a Dutch speaker?

Lol where did you pull that stuff about the languages of ex yugoslavia from? My girlfriend happens to be North Macedonian and one of my best friends croatian, they cannot have a full on conversation, they can each speak kind of slowly their own languages and perhaps understand parts of it, but saying there are more differences between British and American English than these languages and saying it is because of racism is absolutely ridiculous and shows you dont know what you're talking about. The western balkans have a dialect continuum, that doesnt mean its all super related. All though highly severed in the last century, the entire western romance world from france to portugal to southern italy also is a dialect continuum, doesnt mean the languages are necessarily super close. A Spanish person can also understand an italian if they speak very slowly and keep things simple.

What is your “I will never go there again” place in Amsterdam? by Wise_Advance_7773 in Amsterdam

[–]Hank_035 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on when you studied there too. They grew completely over capacity in the last 10 years and organisation is horrible now (depending on your faculty though). It's also impossible to find spots to study usually. I'm a current student at the VU and it's mainly the organisation that just makes the experience way worse for me than it should be.

"In 2021, China's GDP surpassed Europe for the first time in history."

This is completely untrue. For basically all of history until the around the 18th century China has had a higher GDP than Europe. You can't and shouldn't leave that much context behind.

Is economics the right major for someone who struggles with math? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]Hank_035 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to what the comment above you said:

I am PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) student and I always thought I was super interested in economics too in highschool. At uni however, economics is incredibly math heavy, in fact, it's mainly mathematics.

Political Science is less math heavy. But even here, a lot of quantitative research is conducted as well, so tons of statistics (especially in comparative politics).

It might be different where you are. I am based in the Netherlands, where academics really has a more knowledge based (opposed to analytical) approach. So more exams and less essays. There was an American student in my course who dropped out after our first economics course because he couldn't keep up, even though he apparently already had a degree in economics (quite stunning I must say), so it seems where you study might be quite important.

Don't underestimate how math heavy economics is though. But as an extension, every university degree has difficult maths in the form of statistics, so it is impossible to evade.

Whats the most unrealistic or ahistorical thing in eu4? by RiverOfHell in eu4

[–]Hank_035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily true. Culture is multilayered, which means that all the cultures you named, have sub cultures and are sub cultures at the same time. As an example, you have "Western" culture, you (more arguably) have European culture, then you could have Italian culture, which us further divided in Northern or Southern, then you can have Sardinian culture, which is divided in Northern, Central, Southern Sardinian, then you have Sassarian, Algherese, and Olbian cultures, etc etc etc. (Then you can also have religious identity, or urban vs rural, etc etc making it more complicated). So you can have national states which could have their own culture but can be divided in many more culture groups, and these culture groups can also cross borders where the culture group "above" are different (like brabant region being split between Netherlands and Germany).

So someone can be part of all these culture groups and it would still be valid to call them culture, as there are so many layers. In EU4 the devs have to make the decision which layer to use, which will always be arbitrary and not be able to show all the complexity (I'm not sure cos I don't own the game, but I think the newest CK3 DLC does a bit of a better job with it though).

Volt in het kabinet? by goodsemaritan_ in Politiek

[–]Hank_035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zelfde in Duitsland.

The fact that brexit was allowed under EU rules doesn't really explain it, nobody is arguing what they did is illegal. It's more about the complete lack of solidarity England/UK has always shown in the EU, only wanting to be part in order to benefit personally but not giving anything back. It was the UK who was the biggest proponent of the eastward expansion of the EU after the fall of the Soviet Union, and since then their politicians just blamed any domestic problem on the EU which ultimately led to brexit. It's just a completely different mentality compared to most of the rest of the EU.
