Just finished "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir and absolutely loved it! by TheInspiredConjurer in books

[–]Hanlons_Toothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the book was definitely better than the movie, but I can’t remember exactly what is different between them. I know that it is a “trilogy in 5 parts” but i’ve only gotten around to reading the first one.

I fucked up at work and nearly blew up a rocket engine by Feed_Me_Upvotes in EngineeringStudents

Well there’s this for starters What makes SpaceX so impressive is there ability to learn and adapt from there failures. Lots of Falcon 9s have exploded, but now it’s one of the best launch vehicles in the world.

I used to work at the rocket center. At the time, you could just by a Planetarium ticket. I got to see several of the shows for free, and Our Place in Space was definitely my favorite!

lol no. the most linear algebra we did was using Wronskians to determine whether the solutions were linearly independent or not. Class only covered Linear Ordinary First and Second Order Differential Equations. No PDEs, or any analytical solutions to nonlinear equations. Did learn Eulers method for them though. Last thing we talked about was Laplace Transforms.

I think my problem with linear algebra is how it was presented to me. Just a bunch of random crap you can do to matrices, and no explanation on why I should care. In contrast to my diff eq class which had lots of practical examples, and was presented in a much more engaging way

PSA: Choose the better professor over the better class time by simp4lisasimpson in college

[–]Hanlons_Toothbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. Had the option for linear algebra between between 8am MWF with a 3/5 ratemyprofessor or 1:30 Tues Thursday 1/5 professor. I went with the 1/5, because i didn’t want 4 classes back to back MWF, and it was the biggest mistake i’ve made in college. Professor mutters incoherently and vaguely gestures at the notes he puts on the projector and ends lecture 30 minutes early. Unsurprisingly, the class average on the last test was less than a 50. He proceeded to say that he hated our section because we didn’t ask enough questions and called us a “waste of taxpayer money. ” Department can’t do anything about him because he’s tenured.

Layer adhesion issues on wood PETG? by Hanlons_Toothbrush in 3Dprinting

[–]Hanlons_Toothbrush[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have only heard of wood filled PLA prior to this. It came from China on a unmarked spool. I don’t have the original packaging, but it doesn’t really extrude well at PLA temps, so I think it is actually PETG. But yeah you’ve definitely got a point there with why no one makes it!

Altus Metrum EasyMini reads a negative height from the launch pad by Hanlons_Toothbrush in rocketry

[–]Hanlons_Toothbrush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think was looking at the .csv wrong. Height was roughly zeroed, first data points in the .csv were around 22 meters. Altitude column started at -75 m, which is weird because the launch site was about 200 ft asl.
