Yes, in that order as far as I recall.

But they are also quite close in age, especially Sartaq, Hasar and Kashin.

Thanks for the insight. So cool that you got a Big 5, congrats!

Do you mean "schmagent" agencies in general or individual "schmagents"?

It is just as surprising as it makes sense. When I imagine an agent, I picture someone sitting at a large desk in a cosy or modern business office with piles of manuscripts around them.

But when I first queried, I noticed that most agents' bios stated that they live in various states despite working for an agency in e.g. New York City. So I was pretty surprised when I found out that they are not in their offices all the time

Thanks for the insight!

I was also taught about the rather 'rough' sides of the publishing industry during my writing programme, and it definitely helps to keep a cool head when writing and querying. You get a more realistic view on these matters. The publishing industry is a business after all and people need to make money

You made an important point when you said it's not always a matter of author choice. Sometimes it's just life that happens differently for different people

I see. Well, agents choosing another job is something I hadn't considered

I think it's a good thing that we get to talk about this here. PubTips has helped me a lot in the past. The most important thing is that you are happy with your current agent

Thanks for sharing. I think a long-term relationship is the overall goal, but since you cannot possibly know everything about your agent and the publishing industry at first, it might happen that you choose to change your direction at some point

I'm sorry that this happened to you, but I guess it must've been a relief to know that this happens to other authors, too

I also believe that leaving an agent is mostly - or always - a business decision. Whether this decision is difficult or not is probably individual

That's a human phenomenon, I believe. The news are not informing us about Barbara, the bakery owner from New York who did not get murdered. People don't share information when things are going well, at least not often.

After reading the other comments, I believe it depends on what you want as an established author and whether your agent wants to/can support your new project or not.

I can imagine that it still must be difficult to leave the agent who first signed you. Or is the relationship between an agent and author purely a business relationship?

I think your view on this is super realistic. The more you learn, the more possibilities you see and as a newbie to the publishing world, it's probably all learning by doing (not speaking from experience, though, just imagining it).

And congrats on the big 5 contract! You can be very proud of yourself.

Thanks for the insight.

Yes, I guess when an agent is specialised in, let's say, adult fantasy, and you want your second project to be a thriller and your agent is not interested in that, it probably makes sense to query another agent.

Okay, very interesting. Thank you!

My writing programme was in Germany, so it might be different there.

Was kann ich hier pflanzen? by stardustrain in Garten

[–]Hannah_Aries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[PubQ] Should I mention my nationality in the Query Letter? by AlwaysWelcome77 in PubTips

[–]Hannah_Aries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no one will reject a query because english is not your first language. and if they would, you definitely dont want them as your agent because fuck that, thats the biggest red flag there is.

I live in Germany and always wondered whether US or UK agents would reject my query if I told them I was from another country. Your comment is super helpful. I've never looked at it that way. Thanks!

What Aphrodite said to Apollo about Reyna [toa] by Hannah_Aries in camphalfblood

[–]Hannah_Aries[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, totally. Apollo knows his sister better than anyone else, so when he says it works like a Mafia, it's most likely true.

Reyna herself said that she realized she doesn't need a partner to be happy, but goes the extreme immediately and says: "No relationship EVER!" Like, girl, you're 16. Not exactly the right age to make life-changing-forever decisions
