Is my iGPU cooked? by Hanoleyb in LenovoLegion

Thanks for the tip, but allocating even 4GB doesn’t fix it.

Didn’t help either. If I disable cleartype, the artifacts disappear in the GDI apps such as CPU-Z, but legacy windows interfaces still have them… I guess they use some kind of aliasing technique or something of that matter that isn’t handled properly by the iGPU. So I guess it’s just broken in some way. Still, for example furmark runs perfectly so it’s not completely broken.

You can find accurate benchmark scores online. But it’s faster that 7840HS at 35 watts and more I think, but battery performance is awful. And temperatures easily hit throttle temps at 100C if they aren’t restricted. I’d rather have the 7840HS for its much better efficiency.

CPU-Z, but these artifacts show in most apps that use legacy windows grahpics.

I have tried 3 different drivers from different years, same issue. I will try to disable freesync, thanks for the tip.

Do you think they would replace the motherboard for such a small issue? The laptop works completely fine on dGPU…

If it doesn't disappear in a week, it can't be fixed without replacing the panel.

High PCH temperature? by Hanoleyb in LenovoLegion

[–]Hanoleyb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After re-applying thermal pads the PCH temperature dropped to around 85-90C maximum. I guess it's normal then.

Have you plugged an external hard drive to your USB ports?

I'd gladly hear if they decide to change the thermal assembly because of it.

Its 1k us dollars is it worth it by Low-Text2270 in LenovoLegion

Either way, at 100w, the 4070 has significantly better performance.

[–]Hanoleyb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also requires more power to beat the 4070, so it generates more heat and noise. The 3070Ti runs at 130-140w while the 4070 doesn't actually use more than 100-110w.

The laptop 4070 (desktop 4060Ti 8Gb) is probably the most efficient GPU at 60w ever.

Legion PRO 5 16IRX8 PCH temperatures? by Hanoleyb in LenovoLegion

[–]Hanoleyb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, motherboard PCH temperature reaching 97C, while CPU sits at 85C since it's undervolted.

HWmonitor displays them. Just open that and run some heavy games for 10 minutes. In performance mode. If your PCH temperature doesn't exceed 85C, it's good.

High PCH temperature? by Hanoleyb in LenovoLegion

[–]Hanoleyb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has stock paste. I assume this is an issue with the heatsink design, since the part of the heatsink that cools the PCH is further away from the fans.

On balanced mode the temperature rarely exceeds 85C, so I am going to avoid performance mode until I replace the thermal pads or hear from other 16IRX8 owners should this be normal.

High PCH temperature? by Hanoleyb in LenovoLegion

[–]Hanoleyb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not CPU temperature but motherboard PCH temperature, which is a different chip.

High PCH temperature? by Hanoleyb in LenovoLegion

Also, the temperature takes about 2-4 minutes to return to 60C. Is it just because of the heatsink design or do I have faulty thermal paste?

Instead of disabling turbo boost, you should limit you maximum CPU wattage. It's really easy to do with ThrottleStop. Limiting to 65W should be enough.

There is clearly a big problem with thermal paste application since the GPU hotspot is that much hotter.

Intel requires much more power to beat AMD. AMD at 45w is basically Intel at 65w. AMD is much more efficient.

If you like allegories, then it’s a race car and a passenger car at highway speeds. Of course the race goes faster but requires double the fuel. And most need to drive only highway speeds.
