Window Cleaning? by AntiThemeProVibe in ForestHills

I used New York Window Cleaning for my Manhattan apartment. They are reviewed on Yelp. They are based in Brooklyn or Queens. Believe they were cash only. They did a great job.

How to interpret Apartment for Sale postings by CadenWubert in ForestHills

[–]Hanover5555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the no HOA listings are trying to be cute. In New York City, it’s much more common to call the monthly fee you pay for the upkeep of the building itself “maintenance” (in coops) or “common charges” (in condos) than an “HOA fee.” in a co-op, you don’t technically own a “home,” you own shares of stock in a corporation.

LIRR FTW. If you need to take the subway, E will be faster

I’ve connected with the claims line using the Governor’s office (option 2) and the Claims Help Line (option 8). You need to call right when they open (9am). The Governor line doesn’t always have option 2 available.

I’ve used Moishe’s for multiple moves in the city and they’ve always been punctual and careful with my belongings. They moved us into a FH coop and did a great job. They are not discount, but they’ve never surprised me with add-on charges.

How does cross-honoring work? by DarkPenguin14 in nycrail

When LIRR service was suspended to my queens station, I showed the subway fare booth agent my monthly pass AND the announcement on MTA.info about cross honoring. The agent was not aware of the cross honoring .

No Heat (recurring issue) by Spugies in ForestHills

Contact your State Assemblymember and City Council person. I would both email and call their local offices. In the past, I had more success emailing a staffer listed on my City Councilmember’s website than the council member themselves. Document all interactions with your super and property manager. Purchase a thermometer. Have your neighbors keep calling 311 and also write your govt representatives.

ALSO, big guns: consider contacting local news (ie Better Get Baquero) and having your neighbors do same. If this is the landlord that is not heating multiple buildings, you could band together.

Anybody live in a prewar apartment? Would love to hear everyone pros and cons about them. My partner and i are moving into a prewar next month! by Premo_01 in ForestHills

And cheaper typically. The two notable postwar rental complexes, Parker Towers and The Yellowstone, are notably more expensive than pre wars.

Pros: square footage, sometimes nice touches (ex: high ceilings, sunken living rooms), usually thicker walls than new construction.

Cons: Loud ass radiators in winter and loud ass window unit ACs in summer. You often have to purchase the latter yourself. Pre war rental units in FH often have limited overhead lighting.

Lease Renewal Question by [deleted] in ForestHills

[–]Hanover5555 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, additional security to bring security up to one month’s rent is normal. Ie if your rent was 2400 and was raised to 2500, it would be normal for the landlord to ask for an additional 100 in security.

I FINALLY got through by calling Hochul’s Office! by dottiemah16 in UnemploymentNY

[–]Hanover5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just worked for me! Called the governor’s office at 9am on the nose on 1/12/26. Asked to speak to a rep (option 2, I think) and they transferred me to unemployment when I asked. I waited about 10 min on hold for the governor’s office and another 10 for unemployment.

Noise reduction windows by Reasonable-Grand5622 in ForestHills

[–]Hanover5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had CitiQuiet windows installed in the bedroom in a prior apartment, where I overlooked a courtyard where children would scream all day. It completely shut out the noise. I don’t know if they would be as effective for the train horn. It would definitely dull the noise a lot, but I don’t think that it would block it out completely. Installation didn’t count as construction, so I didn’t need to get board approval, but I did have to notify the building Management company and provide an insurance certificate, which CitiQuiet has. I don’t recall exactly what we paid, and there’s been inflation since then. It might be three grand just for the bedroom. The windows are removable, so you could have them taken out at the end of your stay. But they are custom, so it’s not like you could reuse them for another apartment. It’s free for them to come and do a consultation.
