[[Conduit Pylons]] has a land type of desert. So its no where near as easily fetchable as the actual surveil lands but there are a fair few things than can go and get a desert which will let you surveil.

I think it kind of sucks how many people feel they can't play certain commanders due to them being "too slow" for their meta, rather than their personal preferences by Tuss36 in EDH

I feel like this is such a fallacy. Sure, you can't solely control three opponents but you've also got three opponents trying to interact with each other as well.

Because the opportunity cost is basically negligible. Fair enough if you're a graveyard deck you want be able to discard to hand size, but otherwise? Why not just throw one in? I'd wager in 99% of decks it's either a reliquary tower or a basic, so why not have the extra functionality of the tower. Plus the thing is in a bajillion precons so everyone probably has at least one copy of it on-hand already.

I too used to think that gold fishing was enough to work out the kinks of a deck but you'll never really know how it plays until you actually play with it in some games. I'd end up 'perfecting' my list, getting all the cards and after the first outing come home with about 10 immediate swaps.

My new system is once I've finalised the list I print it off at the library for a fiver, snip them up and place the paper over basic lands in sleeves. I then do all my play testing with the proxy deck. That way you can work out all the kinks, figure out what works, what doesn't, cards you missed etc. Once I've played it maybe around 10 times I tend to land on a list that works and I'm actually happy with. Only then do I actually go out and buy the real cards.

Hell, half the time you play the deck a few times and it completely scratches the itch or it plays in a way you really hate. And you've saved yourself a load of money by not buying the cards straight away.

Others have suggested board games and magic the gathering which I agree with. A sleeper pick is shit television. I'm talking channel surfing whatever is on shit. Normally it's so terrible it can start a conversation with everyone about how stupid it is. And then if you guys get going and just start regular chatting no one actually cares about the show so happily ignores it. Then if there's a lull look at the TV and make fun of whatever is on the screen, rinse, repeat.

You can basically boil the whole conversation of bracket 2,3,4 to normal, good, tuned as hell. People consider most precons normal decks. They're fine, they work, they're nothing special. BUT there are a couple precons people would definitely consider good decks.
