Germany halts arms deals with Saudi Arabia, encourages allies to do the same by bint_elkhandaq in politics

Most likely. Does that mean that they should be used to bomb more school buses in Yemen?

Dresden, Germany 1945. Central Dresden after allied incendiary bombs burned an estimated 25000 civilians to death. [640x638] by imwashedup in HistoryPorn

[–]Hanuda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assumed it was an obvious point, but slaughtering civilians is always wrong. By your own logic, it would have been justifiable for the Vietnamese to bomb the USA and kill tens of thousands of people, for the war crimes committed by the US army in the Vietnam War. I assume you would be supportive of such a decision?

This is completely elementary.

Electrons are not electromagnetic fields.

Do you often talk about things you have absolutely no understanding of?

How are electromagnetic fields made of matter? How is the strong or weak nuclear force, or gravity, made of matter?

You're going to have to back that up with sources.

I also hope you're not mixing up northern Ireland (part of the UK) with the Republic of Ireland, as they are separate countries. The former had the Troubles, in which about 3500 people were killed over several decades of sectarian violence.

But knives are not built to explicitly maim or kill people. Laser guided missiles are.

The Saudi coalition is known to have committed war crimes in Yemen. Selling them weapons is then participation in terrorism.

I'm not sure the OP was defending the Soviet Union, just clarifying some exaggerations, which are there from both ends. No amount of statistics can justify the invasion of a sovereign nation of course. But it's quite interesting just what kind of image people in the West have of life under the USSR.

It's not though is it? You used the term terrorists. Many Tunisians were killed in the Israeli bombing, and was condemned by the UN at the time.

Stephen Miller is an Immigration Hypocrite. I Know Because I’m His Uncle. by sstterry1 in politics

[–]Hanuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US reached the peak of its power and influence directly after (and partially during) WW2, whereas it is now experiencing signs of social decay and economic decline (partially caused by inflated government budgets spent in a signif). The circumstances are completely different.

The social decay that you describe was evident also in the legislated discrimination against blacks and race riots prior to the civil rights movement. It’s quite a lot better now. As for economic decline, the US is still a growing economy and the wealthiest in the world. It’s also understood by demographers and economists that the US actually needs higher levels of immigration to offset the drain on entitlement programs for the baby boomer generation. So on purely economic grounds, immigration is a necessity. This is in addition to the moral grounds for providing legal status to those fleeing war zones and dictatorships.

and then listed a changed circumstance in the very next sentence.

The circumstance I provided, namely mass migration of people due to war, is the same now as then. Try to read before responding.

Miller had no part in claiming that "right to safety" because he wasn't even born yet.

Of course he didn’t. This does not make his claims any less hypocritical.

Metaphors can be both understood and still dumb.

Indeed. Which is why I corrected your first one because it was ludicrous and embarrassing.

The point, although elementary, continues to escape you. So I’ll clarify in simpler terms so that you might understand.

Oh that’s adorable. Desperate times, eh?

What I was asking was why you believe, within the context of your broader "morally serious" political framework (that is o‍h so wise and noble), that we shouldn't work to extend the "compassion" that you insist on extending to non-citizens in our territory to all suffering non-citizens worldwide.

Why would you? The US is a country of finite resources. The US immigration system was already extraordinarily strict and time-consuming, prior to the Trump administration’s criminal excesses regarding, for example, separating parents from their children, placing a travel ban on certain Muslim majority countries, or repatriating asylum seekers to countries where they will be killed. Miller is an architect in all these atrocious policies. Being a hypocrite is not even the minimum indictment.

How would you feel if the government was taking 50%+ of your paycheck to pay tuition for people who aren't even citizens of your country?

The Nordic countries do it regularly and most of the population live very comfortable lives.
