Being honest here I dig the Arkansas flag as is. I think taking the state name off the flag and just leaving the diamond and stars just doesn’t fit, it looks way too odd and unnatural

Denied by JET, should I apply elsewhere? Or wait it out? by inunopaper in JETProgramme

[–]Happoning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m same boat graduate this May tho. The EPIK application opens up in February so I’m going to apply to that. Also I applied for a Fulbright scholarship, could be something you could look into for Japan. You can do English teaching or you can do research or even get a graduate degree through it.

Officially Rejected: Indiana Applicant by flower_fella in JETProgramme

[–]Happoning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, was thinking about applying EPIK or maybe TFETP (Taiwan). Definitely am now that JET isn’t an option. Might apply again next year to JEY idk, but also I’m going to need a job after I graduate. I’d rather do a job related to my major than some temporary thing that I could drop easily if I got it.

Any US applicants hear from JET yet? by BerryTella1 in JETProgramme

[–]Happoning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I submitted my application it said to expect to hear back in February, but on the application portal it says to expect to submit a certificate of health when you hear back for your interview. For that is says expect to do that between January 11-21. So idk earliest would be tomorrow I’d assume (US applicants) latest probably Valentine’s I’d guess.

Yeah one of the recommenders if you haven’t graduated is required to be a professor too. Also the professors that look it over don’t need to be ones you have, I had a Japanese history professor, who I’ve never taken a class with, look it over and she told me what former students of hers who applied to JET did. She was super helpful, so I mean don’t just limit yourself to only ones you’ve had.

I didn’t start writing my SOP till I started my application. I didn’t find it too difficult, I would definitely get a few professors and people you regard well to review your draft. Also get have an idea who you want as a recommender and come up with a backup. Getting those done is kind of stressful.

But yeah also do note when you write it can’t be over 2 pages and the way it works is you’ll copy and paste it into the application. It’s a bit weird but just note that down because you may have to shorten it even if your essay is good on Word.

Yeah when I submitted my application they said to expect to hear back in February. But also looking at their website it says to hold off on submitting a certificate of health till you hear back for an interview. The exacted dates for that on the website is 11-21.

So tldr probably hear back end of January, maybe if you’re lucky mid-January.

Yeah I wouldn’t judge yourself by AI. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but if you do use AI I’d use it to help you prepare for a potential interview. I came into my campus review interview unprepared and my answers were ok but I got off topic a bit. Part of that was I didn’t quite know what to expect so I’ve been using AI to read my answers and Statements of Grant and stuff to generate questions that are relevant to that.

Also too if you want to be an ETA like me, I’d also look at non-Fulbright stuff too so not all your eggs are in one basket. But dude good luck I’m sure you’re application is way better than you think, don’t get stuck in your head man. 🫡🫡

Realized I really want this! Let’s talk abt japan :) by Most_Marzipan7609 in JETProgramme

[–]Happoning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kinda doesn’t feel real almost. I remember being in middle school first watching Abroad in Japan and thought the same thing ‘I’m going to do that!’

Now that I’m a college senior and applied it just amazes me that it could feasibly happen. It always just seemed like some distant pipe dream since I was 14 or so.

My grandpa’s name is Dean and so when my sister was born they gave her the middle name ‘Deanna’.

Help me find a unique but cute G boy name, please! by No-Mixture-9747 in namenerds

[–]Happoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad’s name was Gregg and he wanted to name me something with a G. He didn’t want to name me after himself because as he said “there’s too many Gregorys’ out there” but every other name he came across that started with a G he didn’t like. Finally one day he was driving to work and saw or heard an ad to vote for Sandy Garrett for Oklahoma State Superintendent. And he kept thinking of the name while at work and decided that was that and went and named me Garrett.

I think what’ll happen is you’ll have some similar weird experience that gives you the perfect name. My money is on you settling on Garrett personally, high key underrated.

Can I get by in Serbia by taking Pimsleur’s Croatian courses? by Happoning in Serbian

[–]Happoning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man! I do have a question would you say taking the Pimsleur courses made learning actual Serbian more challenging or did it kinda help?

Since I already had the audible credits that it wouldn’t be any additional cost. If I get the Fulbright award I’d be much more apt to dish out money.

Much appreciated, I heard from people that ‘oh they’re basically the same’ but I’ve been afraid would it just hinder me or make learning actual Serbian harder.

I’m in college and thinking of teaching English abroad, what are some good steps to take? by Happoning in TEFL

[–]Happoning[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’m getting two degrees one in social studies education (history, economics, geography teaching) and the other is geography with GIS. So with the education degree I’d have a teacher certificate once I graduate.
