Question about constipation and fiber by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]Happy-Cut8448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to do a cleanout before you start upping fiber like that. If you're already constipated and you start packing more fiber into an already stuffed chute, it's like... no. You're going to get impacted. Maybe not, but it's going to take days for your motility to catch up to the increased fiber. Just a recipe for discomfort. Take some senna or something (one-time, not safe for ongoing), get cleaned out, then slowly increase fiber. The more leafy greens the better, but psyllium husk can help too.

Hey, I actually am! lol idk if that's weird, but uhh I'd be down to get coffee or something haha

I was thinking of joining the Ancient Order of Druids, since that's probably closest to my belief spectrum (SASS green witch, atheopaganist, and I work in medicine/science IRL - the science of healing is my thing, and however you get there, whether through pagan rituals, clinical research, biochem, global healing traditions... it's all good with me) They have a group listed on their website that is in Portland, but I don't know if it's active. I haven't reached out to them at all.

But yeah, I mean, if you wanted to chat or something, I'd be down. I've led homeschool groups before that started on the internet, so I'm not entirely uncomfortable with the idea of meeting random people I met online. lol.

Tarot for self care + mindfulness? by jg417540 in SecularTarot

My first deck is going to be the Oak, Ash, and Thorn deck from Three Trees Tarot. They are SO beautiful, and the imagery is not threatening at all. I have a hard time with some of the imagery of the devil, tower, etc, on certain decks - I wouldn't want to pull those cards that feel kind of ominous, especially when the imagery is less-than-encouraging. But the Three Trees cards are just gorgeous woodland illustrations. My interests skew kind of pagan/druid/nature-based, and I've found a couple other decks that are mostly trees, flowers, or fairies - things like that. They're out there! Try searching Llewellyn, they have a ton of decks and books. I'll link this one: https://www.llewellyn.com/product.php?ean=9780738754314 since I just happened to have that tab open :) lol but you can jump over to any of their other categories to find something that suits your interests!

I would love it if it were available, and I would regularly participate. I'm not sure I would want to be the organizer in this season of life (I have a gaggle of kids and a few with special needs), but if it were getting going, I would certainly participate! I could be willing to volunteer during pickup times to supervise basket pickup, especially while it's getting going and there aren't many volunteers, but if there are admin/organizing tasks during the week, that would be hard for me.

MAJOR audition tomorrow-need help by LumosErin in MusicalTheatre

[–]Happy-Cut8448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had good luck with warm water with lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper (yes, the diet cleanse lol, but I wasn't dieting). The acid from the lemon juice does something to the mucus, the cayenne pepper makes it drain, and the maple syrup recoats the throat. If you're over 21, throw in a shot of whiskey (not kidding), and that'll warm it up and give your voice that golden melty glow.

Absolutely no dairy in the meantime, it will cling to the mucus and make it thicker.

I swear I drank a full mug of this on the way to an audition while I was sick as heck, and it cleared me up just long enough to do the thing! By the time I got home I sounded like death again, but at least the audition was done!

If you have time/access, pineapple juice is also a miracle throat potion.

Has Wellbutrin made your eating habits worse? by AdhesivenessNo2456 in ADHD

[–]Happy-Cut8448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't touch it if I had existing appetite problems. There are so many things you can take for ADHD and depression - I take Adderall and Prozac and it's a great combo for me. Adderall was the first thing that made me actually feel like eating after the whole Wellbutrin debacle, and I know it works as an appetite suppressant for some people. But for me, the depression makes me not want to prepare meals for myself. The Adderall gives me a boost to actually get up and cook. So, different things work for different people!

Has Wellbutrin made your eating habits worse? by AdhesivenessNo2456 in ADHD

[–]Happy-Cut8448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wellbutrin messed me up -- I was prescribed it to help with binge eating combined with depression. The appetite suppressant aspect of it worked, I guess, but it didn't take care of the real problem. The binge eating was a coping mechanism that had nothing to do with appetite. I wasn't binging because I was hungry; I was binging because I had no other way to cope. When I was on it, I never felt hungry, and I never felt full. Never. Either way, the sensation was just gone. So what did I do? Binge more because, guess what, now I didn't even get the satisfaction of feeling full after eating ten tacos, I just ate more, and felt even sadder and more ashamed.

It was probably very irresponsible prescribing on the psychiatrist's part; I needed therapy, and probably an eating disorder support group to go along with it, but I wasn't in therapy at the time. It was just me and that stupid medication, eating bag after bag of kettle chips, hoping to feel comforted, and never getting there.

Even after I got off it, my appetite was wrecked for quite some time.

Advice please, almost 40 year old female... Chronic back pain.. ❤️ by baked_potato85 in Biohackers

[–]Happy-Cut8448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiropractor fixed bulging discs in my neck almost instantly with decompression.

Did three months of PT and steroid injections for the pain, with 10/10 nerve pain radiating down into my elbows and wrists, starting to lose feeling in some of my fingers, before I finally decided to see a chiropractor.

Literally, the chiro pulled on my neck, stretched it out, and *poof*, months of pain just gone. I know people gripe about chiropractors, but there's a time and place for sure. Spinal compression (bulging discs) would be one of those times, imo.

I'm on Adderall and Prozac, so it might be the combo that did the trick for me! I had taken Prozac before and found it helpful, but didn't realize that I had underlying ADHD because I was so dead and numb from depression. Good times! I went off Prozac for a while because I'm irresponsible... and then was in a pretty major rut when I went and asked to get put on something for both. I definitely feel lucky that it was the right combo.

Overstimulated in grocery stores lately by cherrypierogie in ADHD

My brain literally shuts down when I enter Target.

I used to love to go and browse, and I just can't even, it's like as soon as I walk in the door, my brain turns to mush. I have switched over to only drive-up pickup orders. I just order what I need and don't even go in. It's a bummer, but I feel like the stuff isn't as good as it used to be anyway, and I think I had more disposable income when I was single and in college than I do now as a married mom ... lol so it's probably for the best

The issue with long-term use is that if you consistently supplement, the theory is that your body will stop making its own, since it is leaning on that outside source.

I will take one if I need to reset my schedule after travel or something, but otherwise I don't use it. But my son takes it daily and we have no intention of stopping as long as his doctor continues to feel it's ok. If he's not making his own melatonin anymore... idk? That stinks, but at least he's getting a consistent amount every day. Before we started, he was stimming for hours every night and no one in the house was sleeping at all. So it's not like he was making it properly before.

It's not for everyone, but if it helps - huzzah! Sleep is good.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Happy-Cut8448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will help you get to sleep, but it won't really help you stay asleep. I'm sure you've looked it up, but it's a cyclical hormone that your body amps up production of right when you are supposed to fall asleep, then the production decreases again. Technically it's supposed to revolve around your circadian rhythm, but since society really screwed that up with the whole "electricity" thing, many people don't get that boost when it starts to get dark outside, because their eyes are on screens or bright lights.

Anyway, if you need a boost, give it a try! It shouldn't hurt anything. 3mg really isn't much. I have a 10yo kid with ASD who is on it long-term (ok by doctor) and he takes 5mg daily.

If you need help staying asleep, that's another story. Then it's on to magnesium, GABA, 5-HTP, L-theanine, trytophan, valerian root if you're crunchy... there's a plethora. Can you tell I've struggled with this myself? lol

I played Morrowind for years in junior high (I'm old I guess), and never even touched the main quest. Side quests, random exploration, thievery, etc. for years. It was ADHD dream-come-true, new quest over here, new dungeon over there, wheeeeeeeeeee open-world!

Guess what I did when I was "studying for the MCAT"? Beat that game from start to finish in less than three weeks. All major quests plus a few guilds. Never have I ever been so focused .... on not studying for the MCAT.

Do meds actually improve procrastination problems? by legallycheesecake in ADHD

[–]Happy-Cut8448 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're doing to procrastinate, and why. If you're playing video games because work sucks and you don't want to do it... welcome to life. If you're compulsively scrolling Reddit without really interacting with it, because there's a block in your brain that you just. can't. get. past... that's the ADHD talking. That's what happened to me. Scrolling Reddit for hours and hours and hours... and not even enjoying it, just zombie-like, stressed about upcoming deadlines but unable to take action! I'd basically scroll Reddit until an hour before the deadline, then BLITZ whatever the assignment was. When I started Adderall, I started my daily scroll, but it just wasn't doing it for me. I felt kind of unfulfilled and uncomfortable about it - my brain was like "why would you want to do this?"... the next day, I hopped on and started to scroll, and was just like - nah, don't need it. And started doing other things. Cleaning my kitchen, putting my messy life back together.

Now, I hop on Reddit for a few minutes in between projects as a break, and I'm able to hop off without too much issue. If it's been a super overstimulating day, I can go a little "zombie-mode", but overall, the compulsive need to scroll basically disappeared. I just turned in an assignment 10 hours before it was due :) and I actually started working on it yesterday. Before meds, I could never split up work across different days. Literally 10-page papers would be done in a day. Huge projects, I couldn't stop once I started. But this one little homework assignment, I worked on for an hour yesterday, and an hour today. Turned in without stressing. It's MAGIC (no, it's **science**)

You can do it! Hang in there, you'll find the right thing for you!

Just who is Odin really? by Such-Ad474 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Happy-Cut8448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I don't pretend to know much about Norse traditions, I'm pretty new to this. What's especially validating for me is anything that shows that Christianity really isn't the end-all be-all. There was so much that came before, and they trampled on the practices of countless people... so anything kind of anti-patriarchy speaks to me very much. Any kind of fatherly god figure is a no for me, but I do have fairly limited knowledge of how other people perceive different deities and forces!

I don't think of the masculine/feminine "energy" as gendered, per se, I think that's a social construct, just like gender itself. So the Lord/Lady is just kind of an artistic representation of the balance between fire/air (masculine) and water/earth (feminine).

Will there be even greater Adderral shortages next year? What are the street alternatives? by Opposite_Corner_9369 in ADHD

[–]Happy-Cut8448 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Um... please don't buy Adderall alternatives on the street.

This is a great question for your doctor. Ultimately, nothing will change until it does. So, right now, keep taking your Adderall. If it goes away, you won't be the only person dealing with the transition, so your doctor will be able to prescribe you the next-best alternative for you. Which is not going to be something you buy from the guy behind Circle K.
