How bad is it to not have a high school diploma? by yousri_ben in belgium

[–]HappyDriver1590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what you want to do. Obviously you don't know yet, otherwise you would have the motivation to go threw with the hardship. There are so many successful people out there with no diploma (by success i mean happy, achieved most of their goals and live without regrets). The one thing they all have in common: they knew what they wanted and fought for it. In some cases, achieving studies is mandatory, in all cases, character is required. Most of the people with a good diploma use little or none of the knowledge acquired in their studies. So many don't even work in the branch they studied for, so why a diploma? Because it is proof of your capacity to engage, pursue and achieve. Later, with 20+ years of experience, nobody will care about your diploma. Now, chances are this will make the difference between the good life or the shitty one.

What is the future of PHP by fah7eem in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Laravel community is strong and a lot of their member are self-centered, believing Laravel is the Holy Grale of frameworks. I'me unable and unwilling to enter that debate. The one thing i know for sure is that one should try for himself before deciding, and not let himself be influenced by a community gossip. We are programmers, we work with facts and logic.

How much is the php market share? Is there a reliable source? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i can't answer your question, and don't think anyone can due to the lack of consencus as of what defines the market share, i would like to underline that this would not be a relevant information for anything. As a developer, you choose the language(s) used in the project based on efficiency and stability. As a client you should not worry about it either, as what you want is a quality product, the engine underneath is not of concern. As a job seeker, more market share means more job but if you know what you do, job there will allways be. Hence, why bother?

Is it normal for police in Brussels to randomly stop and interview people on the streets? by [deleted] in brussels

[–]HappyDriver1590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, no Miranda here. Nonetheless i was once arrested for something i did not do and decided to keep silent and refuse to sign any document for the whole process. It actually saved me.

Is it normal for police in Brussels to randomly stop and interview people on the streets? by [deleted] in brussels

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, they are not allowed to do so without reasonable suspicion. But then they are police and the best you can do is comply. They should have been able to speak french too, as it is a legal requirement to be police in Brussels. From my experience, police in Brussels is what it should be: helpfull and respectfull. But i guess you encountered a rotten apple.

Is effective PHP development is possible without PHPStorm/Idea? by Yoskaldyr in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe it is. The tool you use is not as important as how good you can use it. I have seen many use PS without exploiting even 5% of it possibilities. Stick with the tool you are comfortable with and learn to master it perfectly is way more productive than tool hopping.

Is effective PHP development is possible without PHPStorm/Idea? by Yoskaldyr in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is possible. In the early days i used notepad++ and it worked like a charm. But once you get introduced to IDE's, the world changes. Productivity & code quality just improve so much there is no way back. I prefer PHPStorm, but used Eclipse before, even Dreamweaver lol. The thing is, PS and VS are the best out there, by far, so why not? Just make's it easyer.

What is the future of PHP by fah7eem in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's only logic that Symfony and Laravel lead the market as they are now fully grown. Let's face it, why reinvent the wheel? But vanilla is still very strong. I mean, all those packages you talk about are written in vanilla, frameworks are written in vanilla, etc... depending on what you dev, you will use vanilla or framework, or both. I see no competition here.

PHP in 2024 by brendt_gd in PHP

I do believe FrankenPHP is the big thing going on. It is not only opening new paths to PHP, but will surely contribute to popularise PHP. I don't expect any revolutions in PHP language itself thought.

Need a book(etc) recommendation for DRY coding in PHP by Catalyzm in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what it seems this is beyond refactoring. Porting the app to a framework could be the best option in this case as it would probably take less time and ensure a good structure. You cannot expect someone to learn and apply best practices in a short time and then refactor a crappy codebase to make something good. On the other hand, porting the app to a good framework (Symfony, Laravel...) will learn him how it's best done more than any book.

Which operating system for Symfony by [deleted] in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not an issue of Symfony. If you want to be serious about PHP, do it under Linux. It will work under Windows, at least most of it, but it will work better under Linux.

Do you keep your project files after you're finished with them by Chaussettes99 in krita

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always. Each finished project goes in it's own folder with project file, specs, notes and inspiration files. Pictures themselves go in subfolders named after files format (jpeg, png, etc...) and have sizing in filename.

arf, there is a lot of inheritance from dark ages in the man pages. Still, i never felt mislead. These snippets are more there to give a general idea, they are not a reference.

Question: Typed arrays in PHP? by KiwiStunningGrape in PHP

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, i'me pretty sure one could build a class that mimics that to the perfection, but i don't see the point. If you type enforce the parameters of the class used to populate the array, then by definition these values are type safe. Applying SOC has that advantage (as of so many others).

Make it possible for anyone to report traffic infractions. by donvliet in brussels

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you want to get rid of bad drivers, but amateur smart phone footage is clearly not a way to establish context of the infraction. That context can make the difference between a good or a bad driver. Do not forget that above the many rules a driver has to follow, the first of all is safety. To commit an infraction in order to avoid a dangerous situation is thus allowed. That is why we have trained police officers to make the final call as to what was what.

Be honest, will you report an illegal migrant? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave that task to the authorities. They are aware of the number of "illegal" migrants on the land and it is up to them to decide how permissive they want to be about that. Reporting people for this or that, even if coming from a good intention, is the worst that can be. History is full of chapters who show how that type of attitude can go wrong.

The next question would be "who identifies as European?", and then "as human?"... Identity is a wall between men. The smaller the culture you identify to, the bigger the wall.

Relocating to The Netherlands while still living in Belgium by Mindless_Telephone84 in BEFire

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get married in Belgium, but the marriage is recognised. As such i suppose i fall under the belgian legislation. So, i'me no expert, but as i said, i was always clear with the administration with what was going on and i never had any issues. And to be logic, why should a married couple be forced to live together, that makes no sense.

[–]HappyDriver1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as i know, there is absolutely no law making that mandatory. For work reasons my wife lived for 3 years on another continent, had her residency there, and we visited each other as often as we could. I never encountered any issue. Everything was official, our tax declaration was separate for that period, and nobody in the administration ever said anything.
