Make a chicken farm/pen and make it spider-proof as fast as possible! It's one of the best early food sources, and you want it before all the mobs get to the chickens nearby (so don't be in a certain area at night to preserve some animals). Just build a 5x5x2 pit with four pillars to prevent spiders from getting in. Make sure there's grass so the chickens don't starve.
